My comment was not about suffering, war, starvation, or anything of the like. You've clearly added your own context and then judged me for it. Great job.

I only mentioned that I know it's simplistic so that the pedants would not attack my character for being so naive. But, I guess it takes more than that to keep the pedants from finding fault.
geocrasher··on Nepal Bans 26 Social Media Platforms, Including Facebook and YouTube
Facebook for a couple things, IG for keeping up with friends, sharing pics with friends. And a carefully curated YouTube subscription list. Only stuff that's worth watching: People I can relate to, have no ego, and are just having a good time sharing what they do. I gravitate toward hackaday worthy stuff and off-road exploration type videos. I limit intake of news sites, and instead try to focus on living my own life, accomplishing goals that I have set, and focusing on improving myself so I can help others.

Also, being a Gen-X-er who grew up without any of this stuff, I have to snicker just a little bit at people being up in arms about a ban on things that didn't exist 20-30 years ago. I know there is FAR more nuance to it. I simply found the thought humorous at a simplistic level.

geocrasher··on Ask HN: Looking for headless CMS recommendation
For better or worse, you just described WordPress.
geocrasher··on Ask HN: Looking for headless CMS recommendation
That never stopped anybody from installing them.
geocrasher··on Ask HN: Looking for headless CMS recommendation
The answer isn't headless WordPress. It's WordPress.

You're building something for a volunteer community, which means at some point you'll be gone and somebody will be wondering how the heck to manage the site with this "custom" setup that they can't figure out with chatgpt or a youtube video.

Set them up for the future, not for the now. WordPress. Just WordPress.

geocrasher··on Ask HN: How do you tune your personality to get better at interviews?
Fair. To be more constructive in that case, I think you're trying to change the wrong thing. The last thing you should be changing is your personality. Look elsewhere.
geocrasher··on Ask HN: How do you tune your personality to get better at interviews?
When you find the right employer, your personality won't be a barrier, it'll be an asset. Wait for the right fit.

Do you. You're the only one who can do it as well as you do.

geocrasher··on Astronomical Telescope “Hadley” – an easy assembly, high performance Newtonian
It worked fine, no regrets. It's more stable for outdoor use, so that is why I went with it. I've printed exclusively with PETG.
geocrasher··on Astronomical Telescope “Hadley” – an easy assembly, high performance Newtonian
I built a Hadley, and it's pretty amazing. I have seen the rings of Saturn with it- and the moon- WOW. Here's a video I did about it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NA076d-gsyY

Also wrote it up on my website, which has a link to the Hackaday article I wrote on it: https://miscdotgeek.com/3d-printing-the-hadley-114mm-newtoni...

I still need to build a proper base for it. Balancing it on a chair or some other thing is just no good. It needs to move smoothly. What you think you know, don't realize how pronounced it is until you're watching through a decent telescope, is that the cosmos are on the move!

geocrasher··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (July 2025)
Yes, it's a religious website, but it's also the site with the most languages of any site on the 'net, at 1100+ right now. Some of them are downloadable content only, most are web content as well. The translations are done at least in part by native speakers of the target language.

Figured you'd appreciate the complexity of having that many languages on a site. jw.org.

yes, on the high end of things :)

Daily, and with enough general usability to share? I have a few. They are basic. You can probably figure out what industry I work in.

geocrasher··on HDD Clicker generates HDD clicking sounds, based on HDD Led activity
Yes, but does it make that magical spool-up sound of a 5MB ST-506 trying to sound like a jet turbine?

ST-506 startup:

Tell me those aren't the best sounds ever.

geocrasher··on Ask HN: Anyone using augmented reality, VR, glasses, helmets etc. in industry?
For me, the problem is that if I don't see it, it doesn't exist. Slack, server monitoring, other communications channels, they all take up real estate. My daily driver is a 43" 4K monitor. Basically 4x 24" 1080p monitors in one. It's the exact opposite of portable.

I can get any task done with my laptop. But not a full day's work. And if I want to travel while I work (which I would like to do) then I need a better solution. This is why I'm looking into VR and also a 4K projector, but a projector would have to be able to be seen in a bright environment, and I don't know what the current state of projectors is.

geocrasher··on Ask HN: Anyone using augmented reality, VR, glasses, helmets etc. in industry?
I am actively looking into an Oculus 3 for a virtual desktop environment that I can use portably, such as in an Airbnb, instead of lugging around a 43" 4K monitor. I'm also looking at projectors for this purpose. The context is remote work.

I can't speak for users of Claude, but as a user of Perplexity, having an LLM do a web search has uncovered sources I'd never have considered. The only time I use Google anymore is when I know exactly what I'm looking for.

When I'm in research/discovery mode, I use Perplexity. Its search/analysis is a lot slower than a Google search, but saves me time overall and generally gives me solutions that I'd have to spend time sorting through a Google search to find, in less time than it takes to do so.

geocrasher··on How long it takes to know if a job is right for you or not
If the real job doesn't match the interview, then it's the wrong job.

Simple as that.

I once took a position at a company that I had known because they were a customer of my then current employer. We'd always gotten along, they were nice folks, had a good interview.

In a very short time, I wondered what the heck was going on. There was so much drama, infighting, and backbiting, and it was the complete opposite of the company's external persona. People were constantly being moved to different desks with no rhyme or reason- as in, a whole department rearranged 4x in the 8 months I was there. I had 3 or 4 different desks in that time.

People were regularly worried about their jobs and whether the company would even be around after family fights. And when they no longer needed me they started playing games with me, writing me up for things I hadn't done etc. Anything to avoid having to pay unemployment.

I knew in the first couple of weeks. But a bit of me died at that job. Eventually they fired me. In retrospect, I wish I hadn't given them the opportunity and fired them instead. But I had mouths to feed besides my own.

Back in the earlier days of web hosting we'd run into this with Apache. In fact, I have a note from 2014 (much later than the early days actually):

  /etc/security/limits.conf
  \* - nofile 10000
geocrasher··on Hilarious but memorable passwords from movies, insults, jobs, band names, slang
This is my first project of this type. Look in the source code and see that I am not a real dev, and I don't even play one. But with some cool tools I had some fun and wanted to share it here. We all start somewhere, and if you read the source you'll see that I definitely had fun doing it. Is it super amazing techy cool? Nah. But I had fun. And that was the point.

Plus, some of the password combinations are truly funny!

He was a good man, no doubt. Troubled, which is why he died before he hit 60. That was almost 25 yeas ago, and I still miss him all the time.
geocrasher··on Building my childhood dream PC
I agree. And I do my best to do exactly that.
geocrasher··on Building my childhood dream PC
The 286/12, with its 1MB memory, 60MB RLL Hard drive, and 5.25" floppy... oh and the VGA card and 14" 256 color VGA monitor, and the Panasonic KXP-1180i. It was October 1988. My Dad's boss financed it through the company, and brought it over and set it up for us. And offered 13 year old me the opportunity to call him any time I needed help. And that I did. Between the computer purchase, the endless phone calls, and then a year later ending up on Prodigy's excellent discussion groups, I learned huge amounts.

It wasn't until much later in life that I properly appreciated how much of a sacrifice it was for my dad- a man who could barely read, worked 12-14 hour days, and came home covered in mud and grease regularly- to buy a $3300 computer in 1988. That's about $8000 in today's money.

I don't know if I ever got the chance to thank him properly for it. He died when I was in my mid 20's, self absorbed and busy with my new family.

Thanks, Dad.
