gejose··on React 19
> I now have to satisfy some absurd ideas about how functional async meta higher effect bullshit should work. All I need is to process events and update MY model (not some convoluted async representation of it smeared across visual elements and their lifetimes), from which something would update control values and text blocks

Could you elaborate on this? I'm not sure what an "async meta higher effect" is.

Reading in between the lines though, I suspect you're talking about state management. You might benefit from one of many state management solutions out there - redux, mobx, legend-state etc. Keeping and passing around local state spread out across lots of components can get unwieldy pretty quickly.

gejose··on React 19
I also really don't get the apparent hate for react, usually from people who haven't used it all that much.

I've interacted with a not insignificant number of people who seem to hold this opinion. Usually their arguments boil down to one of:

* Frontend engineering is always chasing the next shiny thing, and react is one of them. There's probably some truth to this historically, but react has been a thing since 2013, and pretty 'mainstream' since 2015 or so.

* Frameworks and libraries add 'complexity'. I almost never hear anything specific when I ask about what complexity they're referring to. IMO if you work on a non trivial application without a framework, you'll just end up inventing your own poorly maintained, poorly tested and poorly documented framework. This might be fine for a weekend project, but rarely something you should do at a company.

* People also often complain about the compilation/bundling step. This might've been harder to manage historically, but now with battle tested frameworks like expo, nextjs, meteor etc, there are very few reasons to write a webpack configuration or build pipeline by hand.

gejose··on Rewrite It in Rails
Been meaning to try out AdonisJS and this is good to hear!

For a recent personal project I went with NestJS but soon after discovered Adonis. I've actually been considering switching.

gejose··on What's New in Ruby on Rails 8
Thanks - updated to 'static' instead of 'strong'
gejose··on What's New in Ruby on Rails 8
We use sorbet pretty extensively. Overall it's been a net positive, but if you're coming from something like typescript, IMO it's far, far behind in terms of usability.

You can get pretty good value from things like intellisense in your editor, knowing that the constant you're referencing or method you're calling exists etc, but most libraries have no typings in sorbet-typed (beyond `T.untyped`).

The last post on Sorbet's blog was from 2022 https://sorbet.org/blog/, so I'm not sure how actively it's being developed. (compare that to typescript where you have a post every month https://devblogs.microsoft.com/typescript/)

gejose··on What's New in Ruby on Rails 8
I find that I have a love/hate relationship with Rails. Love the framework, not so much the language, particularly how it doesn't have static typing. Really easy to write, but hard to refactor in my opinion.

I've been looking for a framework as good as rails for typescript, but haven't found anything to that level. The closest I've seen so far have been:

* Adonis https://adonisjs.com * NestJS https://nestjs.com

Is there anything better than these for the node world?

Please change the text input to not autocorrect words.

Great tool!

gejose··on Show HN: Workout Tracker – self-hosted, single binary web application
Very curious about what you dislike about lifting trackers.

I built a weightlifting tracker primarily for myself a little while ago and also published it. I tried to keep the UX as simple as possible. If you're ever looking to try out another app, give it a shot! https://titangymapp.com.

gejose··on Japan to introduce six-month residency visa for 'digital nomads'
Everyone’s preferences differ when it comes to travel destinations. What may not have worked for you might actually be great for someone else.

Ultimately, the decision to visit a destination should be based on personal interests and experiences.

gejose··on My solopreneur story
Great read! I don't know why there's so much negativity in the comments, but great job Tony!
gejose··on Ask HN: Anyone else notice that HN isn’t full of JavaScript frameworks lately?
> I have seen many, many sites switch to Next and completely bungle it, making the user experience worse than it was before the change.

What are some specific sites you've seen that adopted react and ended up worse as a result of it?

> doesn't have a "relatively small surface" any more, because even the React team doesn't recommend that you use "just" React

Isn't this evidence of it having a relatively small surface area that frameworks and other tools can build on top of, much like html, css etc?

gejose··on Ask HN: Has journaling improved your life?
I'd say overall mostly yes. I had a few main goals when I started journaling late last year:

1. Help me better understand my feelings and where they come from

2. Help me plan things in my life at a higher level, so I'm not just living day to day. I find that writing generally helps me think more logically.

3. Make it possible for me to reflect back to almost any given day and understand what happened that day. Prior to journaling I'd get the feeling that days, weeks and even months and years could sometimes be a huge blur.

For me I've been able to mostly accomplish these goals.

I'm still having trouble with consistency, but I'm working on it. I like building things so to keep me motivated, I built my own app (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/a-journal-a-day/id1659288235). Doing so has somewhat helped me stay motivated and write.

gejose··on Apple halted M2 chip production in January amid 'plummeting' Mac sales
I wouldn't take this at face value. Modern OSes are great at managing RAM, which means RAM only gets cleared as needed. A lot of that 27 GB can likely be cleared, but the OS finds that there isn't any reason to.
gejose··on Show HN: Working on a Zero-Knowledge Daily Journaling App
Shameless plug for my own password protected daily journal app where all your data stays on your device!

Built it late last year to build the habit of writing out my thoughts.

gejose··on Ask HN: Those making $0/month or less on side projects – Show and tell
Built a password protected daily journal app to encourage myself to write everyday.

Wanted something very minimal and trustworthy and where all my data lives on my device and not on a server somewhere. Also wanted to see stats on how often I write and how much.

gejose··on Show HN: Moving My HTTP Website to HTTPS Using LetsEncrypt, HAProxy and Docker
So in my actual production website, I'm using a ssl certificate that's valid for quite a while that I bought off namecheap.

You could still get around having to take your website offline if you're using letsencrypt by using a docker volume and having it read the certificate from your host machine. I wanted to keep the post short & didn't want to get into volumes. There are several ways to automatically renew a letsencrypt certificate. The last part in https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-secu... explains how you can automatically renew using a cron job.

The advantage of using Docker for my setup is being able to plop the whole thing on a different service and having it run exactly the same way (as long as it's provided an ssl certificate).
