geijoenr··on Ask HN: Are most of us developers lying about how much work we do?
Long time manager here as well.

I am fully aware of the amount of work developers do and never expect more than 50% of their time to be spent in full focus. But this amounts to around 20h per week.

The kind of behavior you describe amounts to me as medium-low performance, but as some other people mentions; there are other types of behaviors that are much more problematic because they disrupt the proper functioning of teams.

If you have low performance, but are not problematic and have other qualities that are positive; you won't be last in the list when thinking about salary raises nor first in the list when redundancies are needed. The other more problematic types will be instead.

geijoenr··on The reMarkable as a notebook and eBook reader
I am a Remarkable user for almost a year and I have to say there is no way back for me. The user interface navigation is built in a way that allowed me to build a workflow around it that just works.

Is an excellent device and I am super happy with it.

geijoenr··on Ask HN: Neurological Effects of Computer Programming?
I confirm I used to experience this as well, and I have the feeling it also has some long lasting effect in one's communication abilities.

geijoenr··on Persian legends and their Western counterparts (2020)
Comparative mythology is a field of study. Is is well known there are common Indo-European roots for many myths that are similar across a number of cultures and religions, including Norse one.
geijoenr··on How inevitable is the concept of numbers?
"We take in some visual scene. But when we describe it in human language we’re always in effect coming up with a symbolic description of the scene."

Human mind works in a qualitative manner, we need symbols to translate qualitative perception into a quantitative abstraction. This started as an economic and social organization need (geometry), but later evolved into Mathematics and got to overcome the shortcomings of natural language to describe reality (philosophy became science).

Numbers are just symbols that map human perception to a reality that is inherently quantitative.

I fail to grasp what Mr. Wolfram tries to explain here, but it looks to me as if he is regressing into philosophy.

geijoenr··on Light Pollution Map
Is amazing the amount of light pollution in Siberia around the oil/gas extraction areas.
geijoenr··on The Wolfram Physics Project: A One-Year Update
I think is good people try new approaches to physics. Who this person is doesn't matter to me.

But the top down approach I don't think has ever worked. Revolutions usually start when a small experimental problem is solved in a novel way. And from that a new model is built.

I don't see that here, only delusions.

geijoenr··on Scientists grow mice embryos in a mechanical womb
What you describe sounds indeed horrific. It reminds me "Chicken Little" from science fiction novel "The Space Merchants" by Frederik Pohl.
geijoenr··on Time-lapse of a single cell transforming into a salamander (2019)
Indeed, there are always two parts to it: the software and the machine (the system of chemical structures and interactions inside the cell) , both equally important. We are at the point we can read the software but have a very limited idea on how the machine works.
geijoenr··on Ask HN: I am currently the only developer in a startup. What to expect?
I have had an experience similar to what you describe. When marketing doesn't go well or the product doesn't get a fit, they always will look at you.
geijoenr··on Fuchsia is not Linux
I really don't get this coming up with a new OS's thing every now and then.

As I see it, is all about driver support; just because is the bigger effort. That is why vendors (and the community) focus in only one or two options (Windows/Linux).

Anybody can come up with new fancy OSs, as a matter of fact many people does. Problem is, there is no incentive for vendors to produce specific drivers for those, and the communities are just to small to cope with the huge amount of hardware support to make them useful.

I just don't see the point of coming up with new OSs as long as Windows/Linux just work as intended.
