I think he's talking specifically about this migration tool, not generally about using Signal as a chat app
gegtik··on Getting Started with Signal
my 67 year old mother in law switched from whatsapp to signal and told me about it unbidden. its happening.

gegtik··on Double Blind Passwords a.k.a. Horcruxing
this requires you to only remember one horcrux to add a layer to security, and it survives key rotation. there is a difference.
gegtik··on Zero to Emacs and Org-roam: a step-by-step guide on Windows 10
There is an extremely rudimentary one, but the reason is that there is a ton of logic written in org that is non-trivial to port.
gegtik··on Managing an underperformer who thinks they’re doing great
this is painfully true. at a previous company we went from forced-curve ranking, to a manager-driven model where EOY rankings were completely at manager discretion (though pay incentive was pre-allocated to be distributed at manager discretion). Within a year new directives were provided on how the manager-driven ratings had to be distributed.

its a sickness

I don't think the Canadian price is at all reflective of average broadband prices

gegtik··on Can I work for a bad company and still be a good person?
I agree with you, if you're working for a bad company and you're actively sabotaging them then the OP's observation does not hold.
gegtik··on Google plans to shut down Google Voice integration with classic Hangouts
Too bad, I used this on occasion
gegtik··on Moving from Macbook to Linux
I just installed popos on my 13" macbook pro (late 2013), the only issue I had was that wifi was disabled; I bluetooth-tethered to my android phone, and found in the pop-store the required broadcom drivers that needed installation to enable wifi.

since then it's worked well, I'd say the main issue I have is scaling, and I haven't been able to tune the two-finger scrolling to be "maclike", it moves too fast and coarse.

gegtik··on Dev Fonts
Awesome work.

Additional features that would really elevate this site:

- Votes!

- Sort/Filter by Font Family, Alphabetical, Last Added, (vote count)

- A long shot here... if you're looking for something to do, give yourself a ML project by trying to somehow analyze fonts for similarity and link to most similar fonts and most different fonts.

gegtik··on Google Sunsets Google Cloud Print
I already couldn't print to my local brother printer despite it showing up on a chromebook. Just silently hung.

I found out from searching online I had to configure a generic printer instead??

gegtik··on Excel warriors who save governments and companies from spreadsheet errors
yes. Go to cell properties and you will find there is a "locked cell" property that is on by default.

When you Protect a spreadsheet, all Locked Cells become... locked.

So a typical use case is to only un-lock the cells you wish people to enter variables into, (color the cell to make it clear), and then protect the sheet so nothing else can be tampered with.

gegtik··on OptaPlanner – constraint solver for optimizing planning and scheduling problems
optaplanner simply rocks - I appreciate your work in the space tremendously.

My suggestion is to create a simple way to deploy a to containers so that a primary server can pass out parallel optimization runs to a set of secondary nodes, allowing you to parallelize really easily.

a second generation of this would include code to spin up secondary nodes on demand depending on the number of parallel scenarios you want to run.

gegtik··on OptaPlanner – constraint solver for optimizing planning and scheduling problems
teachers get a certain amount of prep time but its never sufficient and they do shit on their own time, all the time. plus they pay for school and class materials out of pocket routinely. I think in Ontario the average class is allocated like, $30 for the year in materials.
