geggam··on Websites have evolved back to static HTML/CSS/JS files
Then you dont have a sustainable business model.

Why should I subsidize your failed model ?

geggam··on Websites have evolved back to static HTML/CSS/JS files
I do

Netflix, Prime Video etc etc

geggam··on Websites have evolved back to static HTML/CSS/JS files
Arguably if you are publishing content on the net you are giving it away.

There are mechanisms to charge for it.

geggam··on The American Frontier Continues to Shape Us (2018)
No, It does not.

Businesses are created by people who offer services / products for trade or money. Govt has nothing to do with that and in many cases (In the US) creates barriers to entry prohibiting private industry

geggam··on Websites have evolved back to static HTML/CSS/JS files
Be interesting to see if we could start charging website owners fees for them using our processing power to render their site.

Something needs to be done to encourage some efficiencies given the fact it takes more resources to surf the internet and read about running a k8s cluster than it does to actually run the cluster

geggam··on Exponential Growth and Covid-19 [video]
I am not worried about the economy as in I need to get rich ( Im not close) but realistically if no one is making money the impact of folks being out of work and unable to buy food starts to weigh in.

The simple fact most countries are interdependent ( see : Toilet paper) is a real issue.

geggam··on Exponential Growth and Covid-19 [video]
What happens when infected soul from US / other place visits china ?

Is there an immunity built up in infected people or does the clock reset ?

You cant quarantine the world and expect a global economy to survive

geggam··on Exponential Growth and Covid-19 [video]
In countries where sanitation is an issue will the infection rate ever slow and when people from countries who have it controlled travel to those countries does it restart ?

I think I have more questions now that I watched the video than I do answers :)

geggam··on The American Frontier Continues to Shape Us (2018)
fair statements.

The point I was going to is there is a balance. The incorporated areas need to understand they need the unincorporated areas and folks need to have a symbiotic relationship.

Too many times people try to overlay what works in one area to one it doesnt.

Laws try to be global and that simply cannot work. Let the local govts manage their areas and get the federal govt out of managing states.

How much of NM is owned by BLM ? In AZ its ridiculous amount.

geggam··on On Being a Generalist
Perfectionism is never allowed in a business environment.

In fact most of those folks turn toxic because they don't get their way

geggam··on The American Frontier Continues to Shape Us (2018)
The Governor did nothing but coordinate. Any central known figure can do the same.

The government never pays for or produces anything.

At best it can be as good as private enterprise coordinating work efforts but usually it is much more inefficient as there is no motive to save money.

So yes, all the govt produces is waste.

geggam··on The American Frontier Continues to Shape Us (2018)
>Also, there really is something special about the remote wilderness, and whatever that something is, the American West exemplifies it. Some people seem to viscerally need wild spaces; they're part of what make us human, and they remind everyone that you are more of a guest than a landlord on Earth.

Interesting how you point out mankind needs nature but in the same breath talk about all the infrastructure.

I have an off the grid property with no roads to it (legal easements but nothing improved) yet my nature is marred by a giant substation powering all the civilized parts where people build infrastructure. I can literally hear when the power demand increases from a half a mile away.

The irony is you think we demand the govt for something. The govt doesn't produce anything, except waste.

If we want a road out here we get a tractor and make one.

Here is an example of people producing infrastructure with no govt waste.

geggam··on “Let’s use Kubernetes.” Now you have eight problems
The overhead managing a container ecosystem to run production is not trivial. IF you are doing this in a service then by all means leverage that package methodology.

If you are managing your systems who already have a robust package management layer then adding the container stacks on top of managing the OS layers you have just doubled the systems your operations team is managing.

Containers also bring NAT and all sorts of DNS / DHCP issues that require extremely senior well rounded guys to manage.

Developers dont see this complexity and think containers are great.

Effectively containers moves the complexity of managing source code into infrastructure where you have to manage that complexity.

The tools to manage source code are mature. The tools to manage complex infrastructure are not mature and the people with the skills required to do so ... are rare.

geggam··on “Let’s use Kubernetes.” Now you have eight problems
What requirement is driving containers ?

How are you managing your infrastructure and if you have that already automated how much effort is it to add the software you develop to that automation vs the ROI of adding another layer of complexity ?

The idea everything needs to be in containers is similar to the idea everything needs to be in k8s.

Let the business needs drive the technology choices don't drive the business with the technology choices

geggam··on “Let’s use Kubernetes.” Now you have eight problems
Hate to tell you this but that second idea is much easier to manage from an operations standpoint and significantly more reliable.

Also easier to debug and monitor... but you run your business to make developers happy right ?

geggam··on “Let’s use Kubernetes.” Now you have eight problems
Running k8s on GKE is the only rational choice for anyone who isnt a large enterprise with a team of Google SREs to support k8s.

Period.

geggam··on The neuroinvasive potential of SARS-CoV2
Looking at the current infrastructure and the current investment in said infrastructure. I think it’s a safe bet to go out 30 years or more before self driving cars are the norm.

In cities sure. Rural areas not happening. Add the fact people like to drive to Mexico Canada and Alaska I’d call it a non starter.

Example. I have a place where the road on google maps and the place people drive vary because rural Arizona uses washes as roads. Cars driven by humans get stuck.

geggam··on The neuroinvasive potential of SARS-CoV2
You absorb nicotine in the mouth. You dont get tar in your lungs.

No smoking is good for you but then again the leading cause of death is birth so enjoy the time you have. If cigars are your thing smoke it up

geggam··on The neuroinvasive potential of SARS-CoV2
Cigar smokers FTW...they dont inhale ;)
geggam··on The neuroinvasive potential of SARS-CoV2
given the longevity of webservices online I bet HN is gone before that day happens
geggam··on The neuroinvasive potential of SARS-CoV2
Score one for the cigar / tobacco smoker

I think people have it too good. I think bored people are creating problems to solve.

/2 cents

Things like this really should make you realize how bad you don't have it.

This is what unions fought, not when the office mgr takes away the nespresso machine.

geggam··on Simple Systems Have Less Downtime
Think this article is a different variation on the same theme.

geggam··on The Slippery Slope of Docker Dev Environments
So you dont use automation like sonarcube / qualys and other tools ?

Our corp requires this at a minimum to even be deployed to development. Let alone staging / prod

geggam··on The Slippery Slope of Docker Dev Environments
Now you create an interesting set of issues for the quality and security tests.

How do you test code quality and code security as part of your pipeline for all of those different versions on the fly ?

eg some run python 2.7 and some run python 3.0

geggam··on Haven: turn old Android phones into security cameras
I have left old phones plugged in because I used them with wifi in the workshop. More than once I had to quit using a certain phone because the bulging battery started getting hot.

Granted they were 5+ years old but its there.

geggam··on Guide to running Elasticsearch in production
Saw 4 petabyes in it.

Cant remember the hosts number exactly but it was several hundred bare metal servers of various sizes

Behind Y! Groups

Not sure if you are aware of this. We ran this at Y!

geggam··on Running servers and services well is not trivial (2018)
I quit doing it because I have an AWS account for small business side stuff and adding webmail is like 5 bucks a month.

That and there are so many nosey devices on the home LAN these days I had to create 4 subnets with isolation so the nosey IoT crap cant poke around my personal stuff
