An engineer passionate about JS and basic tech freedoms (e.g. right to repair, OSS, net neutrality).

I think the web with all its shortcomings is the best thing to happen to tech industry and I want it to succeed. That does NOT mean it should be used for everything.

Yeah and I'm surprised everyone forgot how much of a closed down oppressive shit windows 10 is...

Sorry, not buying into the Extend phase. Thank god for Putty and win7 combination still working.

Smart people already countered those idiots by establishing the place where to meet up in case sth like that happens beforehead.

gear54rus··on Putin's People – a groundbreaking study that follows the money
He might be the most powerful in current soviet union that is CIS.

However I fail to see how he can be the most powerful in the world given that USA surpasses russia in both military and economic might (which are pretty much the same thing if you think about it). Russia has no answer to sanctions and those counter-sanctions are just a delusion. USA can make many other countries respect the sanctions due to dollar being universal currency.

There's also China which is simply too populous to challenge for anyone.

How are you going to carry something thick in your pocket? It's going to have pretty strong forces applied to it if that pocket bends.
gear54rus··on “Adobe Flash is no longer supported in Safari”
Well that's a nice try but I don't have to create anything to see through the BS. I just have to use some products this guy of yours created.

HTML5 was nowhere near the capability for interactive apps for a long time. And flash was, just look at those flash game websites, 1000s of them there. His attempt to make the whole argument about videos and not about preserving his walled garden that is app store is as dishonest as the rest of their typical marketing bullshit.

> He built the greatest products in our digital era.

Well maybe that's the problem right there. They were great from a business standpoint (aka getting fat asses fatter), never from user standpoint. Those products enslaved their users because they are closed down annoying i-know-what-you-need-and-dont-need-better-than-you pieces of trash.

It's also ironic that you use this quote:

> Do you create anything

Did he? Or someone else did for him to sell with his holier-than-thou marketing?

gear54rus··on “Adobe Flash is no longer supported in Safari”
Is he really whining about something being closed and proprietary? Can't fucking believe it.
gear54rus··on I deleted my Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram accounts, and felt great since
I probably said a lot of things that would be problematic in this current climate and it doesn't mean I changed my opinion on any of them in particular :)

So are you agreeing with the parent? Setting up environments sure sounds like regulating the shit out of facebook which the parent comment hinted at.
gear54rus··on I deleted my Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram accounts, and felt great since
It might not be strictly psychopatic, idk, not a doctor. However when you call your users dumbfucks, recognizing you are exploiting them and still continue to do it... Why would I use (trust) any of his products?
gear54rus··on Facebook accused of trying to decloak domain owners' personal Whois info
I imagine your bank card payments may be somehow traced to your own identity but don't quote me on that.

I guess some crypto options might help that.

You described an SPA. Fetch relevant data and render to controls. Not sure why we need canvas for that.
gear54rus··on A little bit of plain JavaScript can do a lot
Probably a good batch of spaghetti code if you think vanilla can be used for anything serious.

Post 'illegal' content on your website and send them a DMCA haha. Fight bullshit with more bullshit.

Why do you need to toggle them? Isn't pasting and right clicking useful everywhere?
gear54rus··on Microsoft calls for a closer look at app stores
And it's entirely our fault, as I said in my first comment. Had we collectively refused to buy locked down crap, they (or their competition) would bend over backwards to open it all up.
gear54rus··on Microsoft calls for a closer look at app stores
Think this wouldn't be possible without the locked down part? It is far from a necessary evil IMO.
gear54rus··on Microsoft calls for a closer look at app stores
Hopefully by then people in general would be smart enough not to buy closed down crap that makes monopolies possible.

Replies like yours and another sibling ( hoorayimhelping) do put that hope into my heart.

gear54rus··on Apple’s App Store fees are ‘highway robbery’ – House antitrust committee chair
You are to research encryption and other privacy-enabling tech instead of listening to marketing. Majority will never have your back in this, forget it.
gear54rus··on Apple’s App Store fees are ‘highway robbery’ – House antitrust committee chair
It's about time they got hit.

This will show people the fact that apple is not going to protect them from the government (dispelling bullshit marketing). In turn, it will make people adopt truly open and ownable (?) tech, because for some reason people are way more negative about govt control than about apple control.

So it's a win in my book.

gear54rus··on Apple is threatening to terminate my developer account with no clear reason
Unsolvable.

> We saw X on your account so we are closing your account temporarily

There will always be some idiot who goes 'oh so you're descriminating against X' or some other bullshit but legally valid reason and sues them. Can't have that.

gear54rus··on GitHub wil change default branch name from 'master' to 'main'
Pray that git doesn't fall victim to the same disease. That might cause an avalanche of stupidity like this one among VCS web GUIs.

I'd stay clear of that project and use mainstream Firefox instead. And afaik they still don't support WebExtensions.

gear54rus··on Every year I fill out this survey from Apple, for Apple developers
What stronger incentive? Their shit is closed top to bottom, it's not like you can check their statements. The best cause of action for the greedy bastards is to bash google AND do the same things themselves

Stop lying to yourself lol.

gear54rus··on Play Counter-Strike 1.6 in your browser
A counter question: why do you care? Do you believe someone waited all those years to not buy it and play for free in browser with massive lag? Is this an attempt to enforce bullshit corporate-centric policies that are copyright laws simply for the sake of enforcing them?
gear54rus··on Google Chromium, sans integration with Google
What I didn't understand (or maybe I missed it), is all these extra features and they didn't include ability to install extensions not signed by overlords.

Maybe there's an easy way to patch that in?

gear54rus··on eBay is port scanning visitors to their website
What can you possibly know from such a scan?

Standard clearly states that pretty much nothing: https://www.w3.org/TR/websockets/#concept-websocket-close-fa...

Sure they're shady and that needs to be blocked, but security implications? Pretty much nil.
