An engineer passionate about JS and basic tech freedoms (e.g. right to repair, OSS, net neutrality).

I think the web with all its shortcomings is the best thing to happen to tech industry and I want it to succeed. That does NOT mean it should be used for everything.

gear54rus··on Show HN: I made an extension to keep Twitter from losing my scroll position
Also need an extension that would block the 'feature' of pausing the video when you scroll it out of view.

I swear these brain-dead social media websites get stupider every year. Worse yet, they pick up each other's bad habits (Tiktok -> Twitter -> Instagram in this case it went)

gear54rus··on Missing the Point of WebAssembly
That's exactly what makes it powerful and ensures it's bright future. It is not controlled by one entity and non-working approaches die out by themselves and there's constant innovation. Calling that a mess is just personal problems.
gear54rus··on Block cookie banners on Firefox
Well I use the necessarily complicated ones haha
gear54rus··on Block cookie banners on Firefox
It does not improve anything. The web is apps now, denying that is silly.

I don't want to reload the page with each search or action in gmail. Neither do I want to download telegram or whatsapp if they can be used as a browser tab.

along with most of functionality, yeah, no

Any quick patches to apply to the source to enable this in all modes everywhere?:)

What about solid explorer? Seems to be mostly the same with better UI.

gear54rus··on Apple and Google avoid naming ChatGPT as their 'app of the year'
If I'm looking at MDN for JS docs, I don't need to cross-reference anything. Yet I can't be sure it used the same MDN in my answer as opposed to some random SO post.

I could specify for it to use MDN exclusively but at that point I might as well use search.

In addition to that I could judge the quality of search results (a lot vs little mentions of a technology, shady vs reputable site etc.) to make educated guess of the output I'm getting from search. Can't do that with GPT.

These are key differences off the top of my head.

gear54rus··on YouTube slows down video load times when using Firefox
When they first introduced anti-adblock crap, you could evade the banner by switching UAs. I'd say it's fair to assume that switching UAs triggers some other code path and this function never gets called.
gear54rus··on YouTube slows down video load times when using Firefox
That's because it's not actually what's happening. I'm all for bashing bigcorps and especially ad empires but reddit folks confused correlation with causation here.

The code in question is part of a function that injects a video ad (that plays before the start) and the code itself is just a fallback in case it fails to load over 5 seconds so that video page doesn't break completely.

Why was this affected by user agent change? My best guess is that on some combinations they somehow decide not to show any ads at all (for now) and therefore this function is not called and some other code path is taken. This is consistent with my own experience with the recent anti-adblock bullshit they implemented. The banner was not being shown after user agent change implying it's one of the considered variables.

You can verify all this if you click 'format code' in browser debugger.

gear54rus··on Starship will attempt a launch this Friday
Maybe political is not the correct word. The US did it to prevent existential threat from Russians (this is my understanding) and I don't see one here.
gear54rus··on Starship will attempt a launch this Friday
What you're missing is scientific reason for that. From scientific point of view we already sent the woman to space (just to test if there are any unexpected effects).

Sending a woman (or a person of color for that matter) to the moon has no scientific benefits unless the mission is framed as building a long-term colony there (where both men and women could participate) for example.

You enumerated several political reasons but no scientific ones as I understand. Hence my question.

gear54rus··on Starship will attempt a launch this Friday
Why would China want to put a woman on the moon? am I missing something?
gear54rus··on Debugging tricks in the browser
TFA has instructions on adding conditional breakpoint with 'false' inside. Wouldn't this work?
gear54rus··on Debugging tricks in the browser
Do you want to have this in Tampermonkey script ONLY or not necessarily? You can use ResourceOverride addon to simply replace the 100k script with your own script that is almost the same but also assigns the function you need to window.myFn or something. There it can just be picked up by TM.
gear54rus··on An update on salary transparency in job posts
Do ask for 700 but be prepared to be passed over for a candidate that's better but asked for less. And if you are exceptional (compared to others) then you damn well deserve it. Comparison to the rest of the market (on both sides) is the crux here, not being 'honest' or whatever (what does this even mean). Isn't it?

But isnt the whole startup model is throwing the garbage at the wall and seeing what sticks? It's about quick testing. Even the word venture in venture capital is fitting?

I don't see any other way that it can work tbh. Do you?

gear54rus··on HTTP/2 rapid reset attack impacting Nginx products
Well you ain't getting no-JS webpages because it's too useful so maybe HTTP/2 in the end? Adblock helps with ad I hear.

I sometimes wonder if there's a paid US government campaign to slander crypto. Because I can't see how otherwise tech literate people can't understand the obvious upsides of such a system and keep blaming it for unrelated things.

The only cases I can think of are games (which are huge and GPU-intensive) or stuff that deals with filesystem a lot (dev tools, torrent clients). Those areas are still anemic in browsers. Other than that no reason.
