An engineer passionate about JS and basic tech freedoms (e.g. right to repair, OSS, net neutrality).

I think the web with all its shortcomings is the best thing to happen to tech industry and I want it to succeed. That does NOT mean it should be used for everything.

Woah, what kind of burst was that? Surely it couldn't have lasted more than a second or so (while the jump-scare wears off of the technician :) yet the plane is torched. Thought they are a bit more resilient.

gear54rus··on Why Do Computers Use So Much Energy?
that's probably why its not the international language I meant lol
gear54rus··on Why Do Computers Use So Much Energy?
teach them one international language from the start of their life
gear54rus··on Why Do Computers Use So Much Energy?
Don't know if you're trolling or not, but I fully agree. So much time could be saved by making the networks and internet ASCII-only
gear54rus··on An Innovative Phishing Style
From their perspective, how else would you track unique users on the internet? By asking for CC number, you are outsourcing the identity verification to a bank. It is certainly more 'secure' than email, what other options would you suggest?
gear54rus··on Google Maps won't let you save home address without allowing all Google tracking
This might be due to the fact that corporate shitheads decided to take down one of the videos you added.

I've seen such videos transform into [video removed] in custom playlists (which is infuriating to no end, you can't even know what the video was about to look it up somewhere else), maybe it causes videos to disappear from Watch Later entirely.

gear54rus··on Stop Writing JavaScript Compilers. Make Macros Instead (2014)
How so? Its code will still be closer to ASM instructions, minifed js is closer to decompiled Jar (haven't personally seen one, maybe I'm wrong here). It doesn't even mangle every identifier so every now and then you get set back on track of what the code does by the occasional Array#filter or something
gear54rus··on Stop Writing JavaScript Compilers. Make Macros Instead (2014)
well, cue unblockable banners then...
gear54rus··on Stop Writing JavaScript Compilers. Make Macros Instead (2014)
Chrome provides excellent facilities for unminifying and debugging scripts, it's not even close to bytecode
gear54rus··on Stop Writing JavaScript Compilers. Make Macros Instead (2014)
> general purpose VM

With unblockable banners, uninspectable unmodifiable code and other garbage.

The current state of affairs is just perfect balance, webassembly can seriously hurt the user if it ever gets good-enough direct access to DOM.

gear54rus··on Kitty – a fast, featureful, GPU based terminal emulator
Exactly. A bit unfortunate since this is a successor? to putty which is widely used so this name clash is kind of prominent.
gear54rus··on Kitty – a fast, featureful, GPU based terminal emulator
Am I missing something? VM snapshots also save memory, any terminal will be intact after this?

your choice, it's your cells :) I would not want to dot that to my sanity.
gear54rus··on How true hackers write JavaScript
And burned 3.5 trillion developer brain cells just this january. Sensationalist metrics like this belong in the same trash bin as 'js is objectively bad and non-serious' bs.

gear54rus··on I don't want to learn your query language
so because you don't see the obvious problem with being stuck on a single version of anything forever, webpack, representing progress in this case, is bad? nice try

what does versioning has to do with bubbling, wtf?

gear54rus··on Java is still available at zero-cost
That's a bit dangerous. There's good in both functional approach and type systems but I'd rather see them where they are - in TypeScript and lodash and have vanilla be as vanilla as possible. Time will tell, there's already been a case where things from framework were pulled into ES (coffeescript).
gear54rus··on Java is still available at zero-cost
Yep, and that's why JS is moving and everyone else is biting the dust lol.

Progress needs to be made and those who can't follow don't have the right to complain really. Old tools are always available because language compatibility is preserved (which, imo should also be dropped, we would have much better language as a result).

We also stick to LTS (in my case node LTS)

gear54rus··on Show HN: I'm 12, learning JS, and wrote Wolfram's cellular automaton in Node
no man its objectively good language, believe me.

see how that sounds? that's how you js haters sounds each time I see this bs here on this and many other platforms that wouldn't be possible without js.

gear54rus··on Javascript Fundamentals: ‘this’ keyword
What I don't get is why the React guys don't just call the passed functions with 'this' being the component, which seems like the most common use case. If you need to override this, you could indeed use bind (it's not overridable after that AFAIK so no logic is required from React side).

Ability to use proper shell (and env) for dev tasks and build scripts is the main benefit for me.

Sharex is the other thing I mentioned, its screenshots/screenrecords on steroids, check it out.

gear54rus··on Show HN: I made a tool that made me faster at Git
Looks neat but no Linux version again :( There are 2 things I miss the most when developing under Linux and they are Sharex and Sourcetree. Smartgit is alright but not as good as the latter.
