An engineer passionate about JS and basic tech freedoms (e.g. right to repair, OSS, net neutrality).

I think the web with all its shortcomings is the best thing to happen to tech industry and I want it to succeed. That does NOT mean it should be used for everything.

The thing that bothers me about subscription models is that they reverse the power dynamic between a business and a customer. They are fundamentally 'pay us and maybe we'll produce something worthwhile, if not you can unsubscribe after you've already paid'. And it should be the other way around: 'we produce something and if you find it worthwhile, pay us'.

Asshole corps will always find ways to milk you dry but it might just become easier with the subscription.

It's not about "people" or "reality", it's about filling already fat copyright holders' bellies with more caviar, nothing more. The Wall has already been built, no need to be outraged now.

Probably. How do you monetize this though? You can't easily do it the black-hat way (not every vuln is worth something and you gotta have channels for distribution).

On the other hand we got bug bounties which are never paid using bullshit excuses and so you can't monetize it using white-hat ways too.

The correct solution seems to be to research distribution channels for black hat ways? Doesn't sound constructive.

Same way scummy ad networks do it (in fact they probably use ad networks' tech), google 'browser fingerprinting'.

gear54rus··on Prions, Nearly Indestructible and Universally Lethal, Seed the Eyes of Victims
to nitpick, you probably WERE taught how to react by countless books, movies, stories in which people don't even think of eating corpses
gear54rus··on Do I really need to get out the soldering-iron again?
Did you really just call apples products interoperable? maybe among their other crap, but sure as hell not among other devices. Which are all interoperable among themselves btw.
gear54rus··on Goodbye, EdgeHTML
is there a good list of those prefs? or perhaps I can scan source code for some string
gear54rus··on The Creepy Line: a documentary about Google, Facebook and user manipulation
it was probably rhetorical, lol

I don't even think it guarantees that new neural nets won't be trained on your 'deleted' data

gear54rus··on The State of JavaScript 2018
No one forces you to learn anything new if you don't want to. People aren't stupid, if they invent new something (and pour shit ton of effort into it like with Vue or React) they probably have a good reason to (previous PITA first comes to mind). And anyone's "I don't want to learn" whining is in no way a reason to not invent that new something because that will actually slow down progress of tech field (which we can't have under any circumstance, this is the backbone of my argument). Get your act together or give way to those who will.
gear54rus··on The State of JavaScript 2018
well it's certainly better than listening to ranting retrograde gramps

"zomg new framework, I have to LEARN again :("

have you tried partnering with simulator so your posts are displayed there too? I imagine they would get more exposure and therefore better feedback

Seems about right describing current food lol

On a more serious note I wonder if our grand-grandchildren will look at these programs from blog posts and see them as some kind of "PRINT HELLO; GOTO 10" for AI, ancient artifacts showing the birth of a new paradigm of automation

as I understand it would have little effect since it's implicitly assumed to be that way, might be wrong though

Real consequences which were? 22 months for those atrocities feels like nothing. What is there to depict?

To children: no shit they felt reinforced, the history has shown that this type of stuff goes almost unpunished.

gear54rus··on Bing Is Suggesting the Worst Things You Can Imagine
it was just an example, you can choose another if you think it's more appropriate, my point is that this idiotic censorship has no place in search

if it has something to show me regarding my search (and it certainly does), it must

gear54rus··on Bing Is Suggesting the Worst Things You Can Imagine
when I enter something, I expect to see what other people search for, not "what people search for, except...", this talk about suggestion algos has nothing to do with the issue I think
gear54rus··on Bing Is Suggesting the Worst Things You Can Imagine
except it does suggest if you type 'people are...'

some fucker somewhere again decided what you should or shouldn't see, there's no other explanation :)

gear54rus··on Microsoft completes GitHub acquisition
Was cautiously pessimistic until I understood that Skype won't happen again because we have alternative: gitlab (and others). So it will either get better (good) or everyone will move to gitlab (good, more likely, ms hater here). So here goes.

what even crossed the mind of the guy, I am still laughing at this. with a straight face, he opened a file called 'ad-blockin-list' and wrote words 'political stance' in them. so silly its unbelievable
