gdfasfklshg4··on The Psychological Trap of Freelancing
It sounds like you have serious issues with your relationship.

How can they design a good responsive webpage if they don't understand HTML/CSS?
gdfasfklshg4··on Moving from Go to PHP Again
This is sort of a how to not do things:

1. chown -R apache:apache . # Now the webserver will have write access over the whole application!

2. chmod -R u=rwx,g=rwx,o=rx app/cache # Now all files in cache are executable and writable by the webserver!

3. apachectl restart # graceful might be better here.

Securitywise 1 and 2 are not good things to do.

gdfasfklshg4··on Moving from Go to PHP Again
Of course. I actually regard this as a fairly major issue with the Linux permissions model. Far too many people do as the GP and accidentally set all the files to executable. Cleaning up after someone has done this on a nested set of subdirectories is quite tedious.

NB if anyone has ever run: chmod -R u+x . or equivalent and you run chmod -R u=rwX the files will stay executable...

You can always use find to set all files to +x and directories to -x but then what if some of files needed to be executable?

gdfasfklshg4··on Moving from Go to PHP Again
Unless it is mounted noexec why would you risk setting the exec bits on files that are writable by the webserver?
gdfasfklshg4··on Moving from Go to PHP Again
Can too!

{e = () => ajaxCallToMutateDatabase()}

Or something similar...

It's just people don't do it because it is a bad idea!

gdfasfklshg4··on Moving from Go to PHP Again
The chmod is pretty suspect as well.

Working with a good designer that knows HTML+CSS is amazing. It is lovely to get delivered working responsive HTML documents to convert into the web site or web app compared to getting delivered photoshop/illustrator files. Apart from anything else a designer that knows HTML+CSS produces designs that actually work on the web. Designers that only know photoshop/illustrator invariably produce unworkable designs.
gdfasfklshg4··on Article 13 Is Back On: Worse, Not Better
To quote myself:

> The EU parliament is not the main legislative body in the EU. That would be the Commission. Furthermore the Council has roughly equal power to the Parliament.

> Both the Commission and the Council are nationally controlled by the individual member states rather than directly elected.

Of course it is still democracy because each national government is elected democratically. Accountability is somewhat lacking though.

> Pure methamphetamine manufactured in North Korea. Yachts built to outrun coast guards. Police protection and judges’ favor. Crates of military-grade weapons. Private jets full of gold. Missile-guidance systems. Unbreakable encryption. African militias. Explosives. Kidnapping. Torture. Murder.

What is unbreakable encryption doing in that list?

gdfasfklshg4··on The Fleecing of Millennials
One parent not working has massive negative externalities for everyone. For society the labour force shrinks and the economy follows. Your wife's career is effectively over after 5-10 years off for childcare. If you lose your job your family will be in trouble. If you get divorced you will not enjoy the results.
gdfasfklshg4··on Google Urged the U.S. to Limit Protection for Activist Workers
> To reaffirm that when employees walk out of Google for a protest it isn't the contractors or employees in the various support jobs who walk out. It is the entitled software engineers whose jobs are more mobile and face less income insecurity. Ask any Googler that walked out about that stratification.

It does depend why they are walking out. If a software engineer walks out in support of a cleaner then this is the opposite of entitled behaviour. Unfortunately e.g. the UK has made this illegal.

It was already fairly clear by then that major employers require a 2:1.
gdfasfklshg4··on Monorepos: Please don’t
A surprising number of companies are prepared to accept an hour of downtime for an internal system if it saves them money.. In my experience the best business practice is to offer the product owner/manager the costed options in such a situation and allow them to choose.

* Changing graphql schemas.

* Any non-backwards compatible change in the interface between the components. Yes this can be solved. But when working in a smaller team on proprietary software why use time solving a problem you don't need to solve?

(This is from experience.)

Good points. I would also assume that a major artist and the venues they perform at would have hired some serious lawyers and have a fairly strong idea that what they are doing is legally sound.

Really the only thing to do if you are curious is to find a good lawyer and get some real advice.

Contracts can only stipulate things that are legal. If a term is illegal it is considered void. Courts tend to look unfavourably at unfair terms in one-way contracts which the other party had no opportunity to negotiate. I think that it is unlikely that a contract on the back of a ticket can override default legal treatment.

I would definitely hire an appropriate lawyer if I wanted to understand the legality of something like this in a given jurisdiction!

> I systematically disable merge commits on every repo I manage.

Do you have buy in from other team members for this?

Also what do you do if master needs to be merged back into develop? Do you really rebase develop and make everyone fiddle with all their feature branches?

Just an FYI if you ever lack access to GitKraken Git gui does line by line staging. It is not as pretty but it works well.
