gdfasfklshg4··on Slack’s new WYSIWYG input box is terrible
It isn't the install. It is the updates - and the potential for future backwards incompatible updates.

FLOSS software needs hosted, supported, reasonably priced versions with security updates to be competitive.

gdfasfklshg4··on Local-first software: you own your data, in spite of the cloud
Worth a thought. How does desktop software achieve backwards compatibility? For example Libreoffice can work with arbitrary datastores from the 1990's. Meanwhile with modern web based software we struggle to maintain compatibility within a single datastore.

I'm not sure that brick buildings in London get pressure washed very often - if ever.
gdfasfklshg4··on How to fuck up software releases
Can you really do a legal review from a CI platform?
gdfasfklshg4··on How to fuck up software releases
Because it involves inherently manual processes.
gdfasfklshg4··on Solar and Wind Power So Cheap They’re Outgrowing Subsidies
Every child deserves a birthday cake... Every married couple deserve a wedding cake... We use cake to celebrate important life events that every member of society has the right to enjoy.

I know that I am not supposed to comment on upvotes but I wish I could upvote this more than once. The world needs more of this series.

Normally the rules are pretty good but there are some cracks.

Google Jaffa Cakes and VAT...

TLDR cake is a basic food whilst chocolate biscuits (cookies to Americans) are luxuries.

gdfasfklshg4··on Swiss Copyright Law: Downloading Stays Legal, No Site Blocking
Itunes for example is DRM free.
gdfasfklshg4··on Richard M. Stallman resigns
> I wish somebody would have simply advised him not to speak on such matters because nothing good could become of it. Maybe he needed a PR manager. That sounds awful, but apparently this is what the world wants: carefully filtered speech that doesn't stray far from what people already agree with.

The world needs everyone to speak about every topic. If we all self censor then only the extremists will be speaking.

gdfasfklshg4··on Why Finnish babies sleep in cardboard boxes (2013)
> fortunately you tend to get a few months' warning before a baby appears in your life

Yes but the baby can come anytime within a period of about a five weeks and be within the "normal" period. You need an understanding employer to take two weeks holiday "sometime in the next 5 weeks".

gdfasfklshg4··on German prosecutors charge ex-Audi boss Stadler over emissions cheating
You can decide whatever you like about whoever you like. Inside your head you are truly free to judge whomever you want however you want.

You may be found to have defamed someone if you go around stating your opinions as facts and the court disagrees that they are facts.

I write lots of code and I love the auto-formatter...

I especially love it when working on a project with a few different developers that used an auto-formatter.

More that Java is a platform.

You target the JVM. So Java libraries are awkward to call from e.g. C++ or Python.

Me too but it's not been released in ALGOL 68 either!

> Low-background steel is any steel produced prior to the detonation of the first nuclear bombs in the 1940s and 1950s. With the Trinity test and the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, and then subsequent nuclear weapons testing during the early years of the Cold War, background radiation levels increased across the world. Modern steel is contaminated with radionuclides because its production uses atmospheric air. Low-background steel is so-called because it does not suffer from such nuclear contamination. This steel is used in devices that require the highest sensitivity for detecting radionuclides.

gdfasfklshg4··on How is it like to be a dev in Iran
For autocratic countries this is not even a viable question to start considering.

For democracies there might be some consideration. But then you need to know how the individual people voted.

EDIT: Also you need to consider whether the politicians actually had the acts on their manifestos.

gdfasfklshg4··on How is it like to be a dev in Iran
I notice that doubleclick won't serve to Iran. A very small silver lining to the huge black cloud of sanctions...

One could say a lot of the same things about the USA or UK or Israel (especially Israel with their ongoing illegal occupation of Palestine).
