gbrown_··on Poll: Switching from WhatsApp
Sadly the inertia of WhatsApp is something hard to escape. I would/do choose Signal with a few of my tech savvy friends. But the majority of people I know use WhatsApp, and consequently so do I.
gbrown_··on [dead]
Or https://arxiv.org/abs/1812.09674 as it's the citation link (which is what I submitted to HN before seeing this post). Either way the link should probably be changed to one of these two as opposed to what OP has submitted.
gbrown_··on FTC issues orders to nine social media and video streaming services
Title truncated to fit within character limits.
gbrown_··on ZFS: Use mirror vdevs, not RAIDZ
> don’t be greedy. 50% storage efficiency is plenty.

LOL.

gbrown_··on Sockets in Your Shell
Does anyone know the motivation for this in bash? A quick glance at the git history shows this goes all the way back to bash-2.04. As a grumpy old *nix person I can't really I like seeing extra "features" like this.
gbrown_··on Elle: Inferring isolation anomalies from experimental observations
There's also a nice video presentation here.

gbrown_··on Mitigating Transient Execution Attacks Using the Unmapped Speculation Contract
I had to drop "Efficiently" due to title character limits.
gbrown_··on I Ripped Out a £6k Lighting System
It's solutionism.
gbrown_··on Why I teach vim
Not sure about the article in question but I would highly recommend ':help user-manual', it's actually mentioned at the end of vimtutor. It can be worked through chapter by chapter and covers all of Vim.
gbrown_··on Why I teach vim
> vim generally doesn't need any of those fuzzy file finders that most people use. If you add > > set path+=

Be wary of this, it can end up being quite slow. Here is an excellent write up detailing the usage of the path setting.

gbrown_··on Pure destination-passing style in Linear Haskell
I didn't mean explicit reposts. I thought if the same link was submitted within a short time frame a new submission would not be created, but rather the submitter would be automatically re-directed older post (and possibly automatically upvote it). It's been a while since I've experienced this as I always do a search before submitting these days.
gbrown_··on Pure destination-passing style in Linear Haskell
As of writing HN says my post [1] was made 2 days ago and this was post was made 15 hours ago. Not sure why it wasn't duped.

gbrown_··on How to get root on Ubuntu 20.04 by pretending nobody’s /home
Not sure why this wasn't a dupe of my submission [1] submitted ~8 hours earlier? Oh well.

gbrown_··on AMD EPYC 7713 'Milan' Zen 3 CPU Benchmarked
What's the workload if you don't mind me asking? Presumably the difference isn't just down to the smaller width of AVX2 but new instructions in the AVX-512 family?
gbrown_··on Intel enters the laptop discrete GPU market with Xe Max
> I'd say it's because Intel wants to show something for their GPU-building efforts

I think this hits the nail on the head.

gbrown_··on Notes on Paxos
Baader-Meinhof phenomenon?
gbrown_··on Matrix Engines for HPC: A Paragon of Performance or Grasping at Straws?
"High Performance Computing" shortened to "HPC" in order to fit within title character limits.
gbrown_··on Sexagesimal
If you find this interesting you'll probably also find base 6 interesting. If you've not seen them these videos are both humorous and informative.

gbrown_··on Neural Databases
Surely a link to arXiv rather than a tweet would be better?

gbrown_··on Room-Temperature Superconductivity Achieved for the First Time
Quanta's tweet for this included the rather nice pun "But there is a crushing caveat" which gave me a chuckle after reading the article.

gbrown_··on Honda quits F1, invests in carbon-free tech instead
> They sold the team to Brawn which won the 2009 title with a low budget by exploiting a loophole in the rules.

Williams and Toyota started with a double diffuser as well. Also to be clear Honda had planned for double diffuser on the 2009 car before being bought by Brawn.

gbrown_··on Accelerating Sparse Matrix-Matrix Multiplication with GPU Tensor Cores

gbrown_··on A Pipeline Made of Airbags
Not sure why this wasn't marked a dupe of https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24577881 which was submitted ~10 hours earlier and I think was briefly on the front page.
gbrown_··on [dead]
This link is broken, appears to be a dupe of https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24471004 although the title has changed.

gbrown_··on Learn Vim (the Smart Way): a book to learn the good parts of Vim
Yup, ":help user-manual" sadly often overlooked.
gbrown_··on A log/event processing pipeline you can't have (2019)
> So, the pages are still around when the system reboots.

> The kernel notices that a previous dmesg buffer is already in that spot in RAM (because of a valid signature or checksum or whatever) and decides to append to that buffer instead of starting fresh.

This sounds like it should be very unreliable. Perhaps it works in practice but I couldn't see myself relying on such a mechanism.

gbrown_··on rc.d belongs in libexec, not etc
> The answer is maybe to auto merge what has not changed locally?

Yup sysmerge(8) does this on OpenBSD. Not sure if other BSDs have similar mechanisms, from the article I would guess not.

gbrown_··on An Introduction to OpenBSD [video]
Yes which the linked piece covers but it also says OpenBSD does both KASLR and KARL.
gbrown_··on An Introduction to OpenBSD [video]
OpenBSD does not do KASLR as far as I'm aware.
