> I don't buy the "cars and suburbs" as a root cause argument

Why? I didn’t think the connection between infrastructure and transportation was particularly controversial. Also, real world problems often have multiple causes…

gbrown··on HBO is about to lose 5M customers, and it isn’t concerned
Also, their language support is absolute garbage compared to Netflix. Most shows support multiple audio and subtitle languages, which is great for learning.

gbrown··on Apple's child protection features spark concern within its own ranks: sources
Simple - our laws haven't evolved with technology. That's why your mail has about a million times more protection than your email.
gbrown··on Life Improvements Since the 1990s
What major power tool innovations have happened since 1990? Battery tech is the only big one I can think of.
gbrown··on Mexico is phasing out imports of glyphosate and GMO corn
Thanks… but I do. My state is responsible for more than 1/3 of the total nutrient entering the Gulf of Mexico, and our major city recently tried and failed to sue counties to the north for making their water cost prohibitive to treat.

What exactly don’t you think I know about farming practices? I personally know both commodity farmers and sustainable vegetable farmers.

gbrown··on Mexico is phasing out imports of glyphosate and GMO corn
Corn based ethanol would like a word. Also, it’s ironic to me that subsidized industrial monoculture has a number of insecurity producing effects:

1. Topsoil loss 2. Mismanagement of surface water and subsurface reserves 3. Centralization and consolidation, decimating rural communities which would be producing more labor intensive food in a crisis 4. Lower biodiversity, increased risk of catastrophic loss 5. The whole system relies on global trade to make useful food anyway

If national security were the actual driving force, farm policy would look a lot different.

Well, there was that priest who got outed through data brokers recently…
gbrown··on The Era of Cheap Natural Gas Ends as Prices Surge by 1000%
Not if the price is raised through taxes.
gbrown··on The Era of Cheap Natural Gas Ends as Prices Surge by 1000%
…which is not remotely relevant to the actual point I was making.
gbrown··on The Era of Cheap Natural Gas Ends as Prices Surge by 1000%
No need to be condescending, I know the difference between natural gas and gasoline. My point was more general about carbon based fuels and their price to consumers.
gbrown··on The Era of Cheap Natural Gas Ends as Prices Surge by 1000%
Um, yeah, I got that, but they’re both carbon energy sources directly used by customers.
gbrown··on The Era of Cheap Natural Gas Ends as Prices Surge by 1000%
Oil prices != gas prices. I’m talking taxes.
gbrown··on The Era of Cheap Natural Gas Ends as Prices Surge by 1000%
People look at me funny when I say I hope gas prices go up. It’s just basic economics - we’re running up ruinous externality debt, so just about anything that pushes us towards sustainability is good.

There should be some incentive not to drive an F350 to an office job…

gbrown··on In internal memo, Apple addresses concerns around new Photo scanning features
Verifiably? Are people still swapping ROMs on XDA developers like its 1990? Are folks still having to dump binary blobs from devices to get the things to work with non-stock ROMs? Are some people still relying on jailbreaking tools they have to “just trust”? Does the modem on all these SOCs still run it’s own network facing machine with full RAM access?

Things might be better, but it’s not all roses.

gbrown··on Microsoft Edge Experimenting with a Super Duper Secure Mode
How haven’t they been hit with antitrust action over that?
gbrown··on Use Spreadsheets Everywhere
I was mostly being glib, but I've had some bad experiences with Access over the years. I actually think lightweight database and scripting utilities in Excel could be good, but it would be susceptible to some of the design traps that Access steps on.
gbrown··on Use Spreadsheets Everywhere
Be careful what you wish for - I think you might have just reinvented MS Access.
gbrown··on Microsoft Office 2010: Can’t be activated anymore?
Within an institution where everyone has the same desktop app version, it’s ok. Especially if nobody is using the malignant cancer that is EndNote.

I have a few collaborators with whom it’s not really feasible due to incompatible versions, but mostly it works for me.

gbrown··on Apple is now an antifragile company
That’s why I finally switched to iOS for my phone, and iPhones are quite affordable if you buy used a few generations old. Nevertheless, I couldn’t go back to OSX after years of using primarily Linux.
gbrown··on Microsoft Office 2010: Can’t be activated anymore?
When it works, the collaborative editing features are nice. It’s good to be able to do that in the native app rather than a browser.
gbrown··on Live Starlink Satellite Map
The ones in a line haven’t reached their final orbits yet - they launch in clusters and then slowly separate on orbit.
gbrown··on Candide – Identify Plants with a Photo
> There's no reason to think that needs to be done separately, and in fact that's the kind of things that you'd expect a good model to find on its own.

Disagree - learning to classify morphological characteristics is learning the generalizable features. Especially given that some plants are going to have relatively few photos, knowing with high confidence some diagnostic factors and GPS could absolutely outperform the brute force approach.

This isn’t about hand tuned features, it’s about predicting the right thing.

Also, the approaches aren’t mutually exclusive.

gbrown··on Julia Computing raises $24M Series A
Have you checked out MLJ? I think their interface does a pretty good job of what you're discussing.
gbrown··on Catalytic Converter Theft
I read the post as indicating that specific models of cat are required by car, but that what really matters are the specs, creating artificial complexity.

Don’t know how true that is, or what the effect on price would be, but your reply didn’t seem to fit with how I understood the post.

The word you’re looking for is “naturalized”. Not native, but they’re already there, so...

gbrown··on Microsoft admits to signing rootkit malware in supply-chain fiasco
Wouldnt that be trivially detectable in the data by comparing the nominal recoil configuration, reported hitscan trajectories, and mouse input profiles?

Especially since the cheats need to be available somewhere, so the developers should certainly be able to get their hands on them to test...

gbrown··on Microsoft admits to signing rootkit malware in supply-chain fiasco
Then why do we still see cheats in these games? In this day and age, surely they could just use ML and human supervised cheat detection teams, and set up the incentives to make account bans more painful.

Instead, we get security theater and everything must be F2P to get the maximum number of people in the door.

It disrupts the fungal life and dries it out, while also increasing erosion and weed pressure. It’s not that you can’t ever till, but it’s generally to be avoided.

In the case of clay, deep mulch will do wonders, and the earthworms will gently improve the soil over time.
