gboss··on Spotify and Google Announce User Choice Billing
I actually agree with this. We’ve really struggled with Apple Pay. It’s partly our payment processor’s fault but the limited documentation from Apple and the strict limitations we’ve encountered trying to debug Apple Pay has taken us way longer than it should have to get right.
gboss··on Zen and the Art of Reliability
Interesting, we’ve definitely had problems with Zendesk, on the implementation side. We’re really frustrated with the lack of customization of their chat client and just how massive it is, in terms of asset sizes. Simple things like showing the actual name of the agent you’re about to chat with just isn’t possible. Having phone, chat and email support all in one place is nice though and why we’re stuck with them.
gboss··on The Price of Wheat
The OP I’m pretty sure is being sarcastic and referring to this obnoxious book by Francis Fukuyama: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/End_of_history

He had this absurd premise that because the Soviet Union collapsed and free trade was surging every place everywhere would coalesce to a boring democracy.

gboss··on Long-term cardiovascular outcomes of Covid-19
I am having the same tingling issue where my hands fall asleep easily. Almost exactly as you describe. What could be causing this? I’m going to see a doctor in a couple weeks but wondering if I should try to see one sooner. Could it be caused by clots?
gboss··on “Latinx” is lexical imperialism
I prefer to use the grammatically correct and gender neutral latine/latines. That term seems to be embraced by Mexicans. Julieta Venegas is a proponent so is the show House of Flowers on Netflix. LatinX is just really awkward to say and doesn’t roll off the tongue in Spanish.
gboss··on Ideal Monitor Rotation for Programmers
I prefer to work with a single large external monitor. If my device is a laptop I keep it in clamshell mode when attached to an external monitor. I find switching applications with keyboard shortcuts and focusing on one thing at a time has improved my productivity. Using two or more monitors made it so easy for me to get distracted. To each their own though.
gboss··on Rails 6 with Webpacker 6, Tailwind 2 with JIT, Postcss 8 and some default setup
Why not just use fixed versions and upgrade when you have a reason to?
gboss··on Humans could recolonize Earth after mass extinctions with ectogenesis
Only thing that drove me crazy was the finale. Everything before that was great. Definitely dark.
gboss··on I guess I have to watch ads everywhere on my $1,500 LG TV now
I thought this was the case! A commenter on a previous thread said this was really unlikely [0], but I really believe it happens. Not sure how to prove it though.

gboss··on Don't use third party auth to sign in
Off topic but Facebook’s developer portal has a create test user capability that works pretty well. I don’t use Facebook either but if I need it for work I create a Facebook with my work email.
gboss··on Dropshipping: Hustlers making millions from goods they never handle
Yes absolutely. There are plenty of dropshippers that have relationships with manufacturers and wholesalers that only buy from the authentic manufacturer.
gboss··on Over three billion people worldwide now play video games, study reports
Spider solitaire is my jam. I played it every day of my commute on my phone for a year. Still go back to it sometimes. Definitely need to try other kinds.
gboss··on We Can Do Better Than SQL
Slightly tangential but I really like Linq syntax. The only problem I have with it is that it is really hard to debug if there is a logic error. I often see developers write linq find out the record set they get back is incorrect and then break up the linq query to a nested if clause to get what they want.
gboss··on New Relic changes business model, open-sources agents and instrumentation
This is the exact same situation my company finds itself in. We are stuck with it because they have decent APM metrics for .NET Java and JavaScript and it’s nice it’s all in one dashboard. The new UI is pretty difficult to use and way too bright. Currently exploring other options and would be happy to switch to a more affordable competitor.
gboss··on Apple reports Q3 results
My partner and I bought our God Daughter an iPad for her sixth birthday because we were worried about her not being in school. We installed a bunch of educational apps for her. She loves it. We also get to FaceTime with her and our relatives which is fun. I’m sure a lot of iPads were bought for kids stuck at home. (Edit typo)
gboss··on Small mail server best current practices
For A) I believe that is what https://mailinabox.email/ is trying to achieve
gboss··on Saliva based Covid test: results in 45 minutes
I really do not understand what the hold up is. In California I know over ten people whose results have taken more than seven or eight days to come back. This is in the past two weeks. I am still waiting for my results from Sunday six days ago. It really is inexcusable how mismanaged this epidemic is in the United States.
gboss··on How Mormons built a startup ecosystem in Utah
I agree with the GP about the air pollution. I also find the Salt Lake reeks in the summer. When I would go with my dad as a kid on his business trips, the smell in the summer was really off-putting. I think it's the same problem Mexico City has. Salt Like City is in a bowl, and there's no coastal winds to blow the pollution away like the bay area has, so the pollution just lingers. I do think it's a really clean city on the ground though and Park City is so close and really amazing for Skiing / Snow Boarding. The national parks in Southern Utah are also top notch.
gboss··on Lies, damn lies, and front-end tracking
I don’t know how standard this is but to prevent our third party JavaScript from impacting page load times, we defer our tag manager (Tealium) from being loaded until after the page has successfully loaded.
gboss··on Moving from TypeScript to Rust / WebAssembly
WASM doesn’t have a garbage collector built in. Languages that use a garbage collector have to also convert their language runtime into WASM which can dramatically increase the WASM file sizes and is more work to process by the browser. Since rust doesn’t have a garbage collector this should make its WASM files smaller and more performant
gboss··on Hazard pay in focus as essential workers earn less than the jobless
The federal government is made up of many different actors with different goals. The $600 unemployment pandemic bonus was only added to the relief package because of the house democrats insistence. I think it’s hard to believe that was not their goal.
gboss··on Hazard pay in focus as essential workers earn less than the jobless
I always thought the point was to keep people home during the pandemic instead of working odd jobs to compensate. Incentivizing people to not work by paying them more to stay at home was a public health policy choice. Of course, the bills were passed really rapidly and maybe weren’t that thought out.

gboss··on San Francisco faces fiscal chaos
I'll take three hours over 12 hours which is how long it can take to get to Tahoe from SF on a Friday when it's snowing.
gboss··on The deepest ever sighting of an octopus, by cameras on the Indian Ocean floor
To be honest, I found that book all over the place. It was interesting, but its message could be condensed to half its length. There was a lot of musing and scattered anecdotes but not much direction. I hope a higher quality book can come out about Octopuses. It was a bit of a let down for me.
gboss··on It’s OK for your open source library to be a bit shitty (2015)
That's terrible. I am a manager and actively discourage people from working late / weekends. I find it's not sustainable. People who do that, regardless of children status are much less predictable in their output. They go through peaks of productivity and then they crash. It also ends up happening that they work on the wrong thing because no one is around at night or weekends to answer basic questions that may unfortunately not be in the ticket. Some of our employees with highest productivity have kids. I think your story means you should look for a new job when it is possible for you.
gboss··on Vanilla Production in Geodesic Domes
It's amazing really all of the plants that originated from indigenous Mexican cultivation. Corn, tomatoes, chili peppers, squash, chocolate, vanilla, avocado, and more! The fact that Italians didn't have peppers nor the Irish having potatoes until after columbus always blows my mind.

gboss··on The Case for Stanislaw Lem
I love Stanislaw Lem's work. I particularly enjoyed Futurological Congress. It was so absurd but I loved how it explored how it is never possible to be 100% sure that what you are experience is "real". The trippiness of all of the drugs and absurd situations was hilarious. Highly recommend.
gboss··on The weird, get-rich-quick world of dropshipping
It was early days and I think she just had about 200k different fabrics and wallpapers and ruled SEO or at least got a decent chunk. She probably did well because of the bulk import of products. I am not sure but I think all of the warehouses were in the US. We didn't talk to anyone in China. We placed orders through distributors that sold to retail stores. The brands I remember were Duralee, F.S. Schumacher, Ralph Lauren, and others I forget. Customers knew what they wanted, usually from an interior designers recommendation. We could just send them a swatch of a specific run of fabric or wallpaper. It was always messy though because it was almost impossible to guarantee the swatch would match the actual product delivered. Every run of a product is slightly different. It's why people buy extra carpet or wallpaper for high traffic corridors to be replaced early.
gboss··on The weird, get-rich-quick world of dropshipping
Her biggest success was upholstery fabric. Forgot to mention she did a decent amount of wallpaper, probably 15% of her business. Furniture was a very very small portion. I don't think there was much overlap other then both businesses being designy but her store was a furniture showroom. Her sales were nationwide. I think she took a lot of business from interior designers who would sell at a high markup to customers.
