I am a programmer. I am a gay person. I don't bring it up in every conversation. That's just life.

gayprogrammer··on Ask HN: How long did it take you to get your first dev job?
I have also been appling for developer jobs and waiting more than a month for more than rejection responses.

For anyone who came here to share advice about my resume, here's a link via my VPS: http://162.243.149.58/Resume.pdf

gayprogrammer··on Break Up the Insulin Racket
Insulin goes bad about 30 days after first use. Pretty much all diabetics need to buy a vial or two every month, no matter if you've used it all or not.

Think of it like keeping milk stocked in your fridge. Even if you spread it out to last more than a month, the remaining half will go bad before you got to it.

So although changing diet and increasing physical activity may reduce insulin requirements in both type 2 and type 1 (as several people have anecdotally shared here), you can see how it doesn't avoid buying insulin every month.

gayprogrammer··on Effects of a Year in Ketosis [video]
The context of balance is the very thing being studied.

How are the food groups defined? Why isn't ethanol included as a food group? Do you consider fiber in its own group?

Taking "balanced" portions from a set of groups makes the context in which the groups are defined very important.

These complaints are all "first world problems". It's a non-issue.
gayprogrammer··on Yonatan Zunger about the Paris Attacks
Immigrants from Mexico don't follow a religion that instructs them to kill.
gayprogrammer··on Yonatan Zunger about the Paris Attacks
> Charlie Hebdo's targets ...

Who was it that killed who again?

>Charlie Hebdo's targets weren't simply religious extremists preaching from Saudi mosques; they were a portrayal of the French Muslim population as violent extremists, the dangerous other.

It sounds like the author is saying that the satire cartoon invented "racism" against Muslims. But the cartoon "targets" proved the magazine absolutely, positively, bona-fided-ly correct. They proved Charlie Hebdo right.

>You sow the wind, you reap the whirlwind. What did you expect was going to happen?

So the author actually blames religious attacks on the act of people talking about it happening. In some circular way, the cartoon magazine created religious violence?

I cannot fathom how the author would explain religiously motivated violence in places where a satire cartoon isn't there to talk about it.

gayprogrammer··on How bad a boss is Linus Torvalds?
>empower community managers or other managers to encourage and enforce civil behavior.

I don't disagree that it can be unpleasant, but you can't just change one thing about a community and expect everything else to stay the same. In reality, enforcing community changes will have unintended consequences. As the article freely admits, the best way to get quality contributions is to let the code speak for itself.

If the named code was objectively bad, as the article suggests, then that programmer was doing his community a disservice by submitting it, and he needed his community to correct his behavior.

gayprogrammer··on Health hackers: Patients taking medical innovation into their own hands
> although they don’t admit genuine hackers such as Omer

I wonder what this means, and what has happened to make the reporter say this.

gayprogrammer··on Health hackers: Patients taking medical innovation into their own hands
> There have been doctors researching this for years in carefully controlled trials...

You assume this is true, yet if it exists, all useful information is kept behind closed doors. The technology to make this work has existed relatively unchanged for years.

That is the point of the hashtag #wearenotwaiting

gayprogrammer··on More parents, students saying 'no' to homework
I didn't see anything from the side of parents who want more homework. Why are some parents asking for more? Are their children misbehaving? Are their children not learning the material? I am guessing that homework doesn't automatically make up for a school's or teachers' shortcomings.
gayprogrammer··on FE-Schrift – forgery-impeding typeface
Sometimes the severity of a crime outweighs the frequency. It may be worth preventing any forgery since, when it does happen, the effects are bad.
gayprogrammer··on I'm Begging for Work

gayprogrammer··on OS X El Capitan GM Candidate available

gayprogrammer··on You can't defend public libraries and oppose file-sharing
The only practical conclusion I can draw about file-sharing is that it does not look like it will stop. Information sharing is only going to increase--that's what the internet was designed for. Publishers will probably need to focus on physical means of revenue that the internet can not inherently provide.
gayprogrammer··on You can't defend public libraries and oppose file-sharing
Many comments here compare the cost of a physical library to near-zero cost of the internet, but that's not a fair comparison itself.

The cost of a physical library is physical, not informational. The article describes a situation where information sharing was challenged by the industry that has a physical monopoly on media (books). They were not granted informational monopoly, they only have monopoly on physical manufacturing.

Thus the absence of physical cost (or difference in efficiency) of sharing information does not change the concept of a library.

gayprogrammer··on Beware of Open Source Software Zombies
I don't see any problem with OSS code without a community. I've always thought of the freely available code online like a library full of books: nobody is reading 99% of them, but their availability is important for someone who wants to learn or find new ideas. What if only the most popular code repos existed?
gayprogrammer··on The Website That Got Me Expelled
My highschool brought me in to a meeting with the principal and police officer when I wrote the name of my boyfriend on my ticket to senior prom. They "convinced" me that I could not go to prom with a guy. End of story.

gayprogrammer··on When You Lose Weight, Where Does It Go?
> ... the only part of the fat ...

It's only Hydrogen... But it still needs to go somewhere. Oxygen comes in to carry away the Hydrogen as water--you can't urinate Hydrogen.

gayprogrammer··on When You Lose Weight, Where Does It Go?
> Where do you think all the water mass in a tree comes from?

Still, we don't normally assume that water is the primary component of "soil". The key realization is that a tree is not made of the dirt around it.

gayprogrammer··on College Apologizes for Serving Mexican Food During Sci-Fi Event
I think that serving any dish at a popular event is a compliment to that particular chef, caterer, or dish being served.

I don't imagine anyone felt racist going back for seconds.
