gatmne··on Calamine: Excel file reader, written in Rust
Again, thank you so much for sharing this.

A format that's trivial to generate in a single pass with no special packing and zipping requirements is a godsend. It supports Word documents too!

I'd argue that you must at least attempt deal with csvs before you can claim to be an excel file reader because end-users will be supplying you with whatever format their reports are in.

"Be flexible in what you accept" seems especially apt here.

This might come in handy!

Does this work with libreoffice? Do you have a sample on hand that I can test?

gatmne··on Call for help: fund GIMP development and Libre animation
Great by whose definition? I think that GIMPs UX is more than sufficient for what it is. It certainly doesn't "give FOSS GUIs their bad reputation".

It's okay if GIMP's UX doesn't suit your tastes. It suites others just fine.

This is the primary reason I use open source as well. Software will remain available and its availability is not subject to third parties' whims.

And yet here many of us are, satisfied with using it daily and supporting it. You would do well not to project your experiences and use cases on everybody else.
gatmne··on Symantec CEO says source code reviews by foreign states pose unacceptable risk
I'm sure that properly run foreign states consider unauditable software an unacceptable security risk as well. Between this nonsense and symantec's history of security mishaps, I'll be making sure to avoid this company from now on. I'll also recommend against dealing with them if asked.

Ridiculous.

gatmne··on .NET core spies on users by default
You bring up a good point. Software shouldn't start sending information until the user is explicitly informed just as users are required to explicitly consent to an EULA.

Otherwise it's the software that's using the user and not the other way around.

Extremely disappointing.

First we had to keep a close eye on our browsers, now we have to keep track of our text editors, dev tools, operating system, and even our own hardware. if we're really lucky, some will have some obscure way of limiting it.

Making you job easier and improving your product are not valid excuses for this kind of despicable behavior.

When I set up my next dev machine, everything will be sandboxed or the entire machine air-gaped. Some developers and software vendors can no longer be trusted.
