gassiss··on Netflix stops charging customers who never watch
There's a Brazilian credit card company that gives you a virtual credit card. You can generate as many new credit cards as you want, even multiple times a day, to use for online banking exclusively.

I think privacy.com does a similar service, but I loved to have this feature for no extra cost. I assume it also benefits the CC company a bunch with happy customers and less labor costs since people will be calling less for this kind of situation.

gassiss··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2020)
Thank you very much. Pretty cool app!

How can I reach out to you to give you some feedback? There's no contact in your profile.

gassiss··on Ask HN: What Skills to Acquire in 2020?
I've been feeling pain in my right elbow for a couple of years now. Doctor diagnosed as carpal tunnel syndrome.

You know the picture. Spent tons of time playing video game and works in an office since forever. I can't afford physical therapy, but working out + good posture makes the pain goes away "magically".

I say "magically" because I am not doing anything to target it, just go to the gym and literally do whatever for 30-40 minutes every other day.

gassiss··on Ask HN: What Skills to Acquire in 2020?
Nothing wrong to be exercise regularly without progression. I wouldn't be surprised if this was even better than going ham on the gym because of how little exercise the human body actually needs to be considered healthy.

Not saying there is nothing wrong with having lifting goals either. But there are definitely diminishing returns to your health in regards to the amount/intensity of your exercise routine for sure.

gassiss··on Ask HN: How do Toronto tech salaries compare to NYC/SV?
From my experience the Toronto number is heavily underestimated. There is a huge shortage of senior devs here and this is intermediate level pay.
gassiss··on I interviewed at six top companies in Silicon Valley in six days
I find funny that people say Facebook is evil because of this quote:

"Give people just the right amount of dopamine and fiddle with their psyche in all the right ways in order to maximize the amount of time they spend staring at their phones."

And yet, that's basically what every entertainment driven person/business wants to do. Every app, TV show, news media, magazine or even the guy playing the guitar in the subway, all they want is the money that comes from constant attention.

gassiss··on I interviewed at six top companies in Silicon Valley in six days
I understand your point of view, but honestly, this type of comparison makes no sense. Cigarettes are not good in any way.
gassiss··on The Link Between Inflammation and Depression?
A nutritionist/dietitian would be your best bet. But my 2c about the sugar in fruits, they're not as bad as refined sugar because of the fiber. You have to look at food as a whole, not as macronutrients combined together.
gassiss··on Ask HN: What's the largest amount of bad code you have ever seen work?
Three years ago I was hired as a Business Analyst, with 0 background in anything related to IT. Our team was responsible to maintain a legacy base in COBOL.

As time went by, everything started to make sense and I was able to grasp almost everything about the environment and the tech stack. Even perform a little bit of system analysis in COBOL to try and identify some gaps in the code base.

But what always intrigued me is that even those senior developers in the team with 25+ years of experience with COBOL wouldn't ever touch this one program. The program responsible for 90% of the logic of the product of that company. Every now and then, this program would ABEND for whatever reason and sometime, no one could figure out why. They respected (cute way of saying they were afraid) this program so much that, instead of refactoring it, they would just throw an if statement and let it run.

This program was built in the 60s and had I don't know how many hundreds of thousands of lines of code. It is still running to this day.

Now I don't have the expertise to say if that was bad code, and even if I had, I didn't deal with this program enough to say this anyway, but I was very intrigued why would this particular program ABEND out of nowhere, and no of these super experienced developers would have the guts to touch it.

My wife is currently using a 5c. It's not great, but is working perfectly fine for everyday usage.
gassiss··on Brazil: A look into Latin America’s largest startup ecosystem (2017)
Most banks don't require you to be physically present anymore. I don't know about Banco do Brasil, but I had accounts in Bradesco and Santander, both have a line to call your manager in a call center, and you can do pretty much everything besides getting physical cash from the phone.
gassiss··on 20M historical artifacts destroyed in Brazil National Museum fire
Funny thing, I live in Rio de Janeiro, and no one is talking about it today.

That's how much people care. It's sad.

gassiss··on Teens who refuse to use social media
Forums are also a social media, but a less abusing one.
gassiss··on Teens who refuse to use social media
Most people have notifications for all apps on, as it is the standard.
gassiss··on The neglected benefits of the commute
I worked like this for a whole year (well, not five minutes walk, but ten), and it was golden. It was the best feeling, being able to eat fresh prepared food (I pre-prepared it in advance so I was able to make it ready to eat in < 20') and then take a power nap before going back to work!

No one is convincing me a commute is better than this.

gassiss··on Just Read the Book Already
The best way to read more books is reading books that you enjoy rather than just because you have the urge to finish it, no doubt.
gassiss··on Just Read the Book Already
I've read some of Taleb's books and while I find him very smart and with very valuable insights, I'd rather take some of these extreme things he says (like what you pointed) with a grain of salt.

gassiss··on Brazil sets new record for homicides
You get super paranoid. I've lived in Rio de Janeiro all my life, and I've never heard of anyone who either was never mugged or had someone very close that was (by someone close, I mean spouse, parent or child).

I've seen three people being mugged in front of my place, and I don't live in a place locals would call "dangerous".

But that's just me. Besides some common practices that have become instinct, like not using your phone outside and looking over your shoulder in desert places (or avoiding these places altogether), I think the majority of the population got numb to this situation and just accepted it like it is normal.

gassiss··on The Hacker's Diet (2005)
This is exactly what every single dietitian/nutritionist learn in school.
gassiss··on In Brazil, it is considered rude to be on time to a party
What almost always happen: the doctor plans 30 min appointments and takes 45-60 min for every appointment.

So if you book your appointment early in the day, you're good to arrive on time. But if you book in the afternoon, you'll be doomed with 2 hour+ waiting time.

gassiss··on In Brazil, it is considered rude to be on time to a party
Same here, and I live in Rio.
gassiss··on In Brazil, it is considered rude to be on time to a party
I am born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, and am very punctual. For business meetings most people don't come up late, but for social gatherings they almost always do. It's frustrating because it seems like I will never learn my lesson and always arrive punctually even if I don't intend to
gassiss··on Melatonin: Much More Than You Wanted to Know
I'm wondering why you're flagged. Yes, fruits have sugar (fructose), but when you're eating the fruit whole your comment is on point. The fiber in the fruit makes the sugar absorption slower.

Of course if you're drinking 2L of juice a day you're gonna have a problem, as you would going ham on any kind of food. (ANY)

gassiss··on When We Eat, or Don’t Eat, May Be Critical for Health
Why healthy complex carbs are a myth?
gassiss··on Ask HN: What were/are you doing at age 25? What would you change?
Definitely harder than 20 y'old skinnyfat you but also definitely easier than 40 y'old skinnyfat you.

Just focus on the process and enjoy the ride, I guess.

gassiss··on Ask HN: Software eng, but not a web dev. Learn new frameworks to build MVP?
I see your point. How much do I actually have to know is a very good question. Because there will always be something else to learn.

In my case, I want to have a good base knowledge before leaning on any kind of "magic". I got into Python with the MIT course on EDX and got bit by the programming bug. I decided to try and get into the web dev stack, so I started to dive into JS too. Now I want to start to build stuff, and the reason why I asked the question in my first post is because it may be easier to just go deep into one language (can't do web dev without JS), since I am so inexperienced.

gassiss··on Ask HN: Software eng, but not a web dev. Learn new frameworks to build MVP?
But I guess that's exactly the point, isn't it? The fact that Flask/Express are so bare bones, you end up learning a lot, so for learning purposes makes a lot of sense.
gassiss··on Ask HN: Software eng, but not a web dev. Learn new frameworks to build MVP?
Sorry for my ignorance as I am learning web development. How would Express.js compare to Flask in this scenario? From what I've read it seems they are pretty similar in concept.

I do know the basic syntax of both JS and Python, but I thought it would be better to focus on one language, and since JS is so common for the front-end complex stuff it would make sense.
