garyfirestorm··on Asian governments roll out 4-day weeks, WFH to solve fuel crisis caused by war
Poverty doesn’t have the luxury to choose or take moral stands. When a dollar worth oil price fluctuation can lead to thousands going hungry for a day, you as a leader will do everything to avoid catastrophic sanctions.
garyfirestorm··on My Homelab Setup
you can use https://nginxproxymanager.com/ to manage various services on your homelab. it works flawlessly with Tailscale - I can connect to my tailnet and simply type http://service.mylocaldomain to open the service. you will also need adguard -> adguard dns rewrite -> *.mylocaldomain forwards to the NPM instance and NPM instance has all the information of which IP:PORT has which service Also tailscale DNS should be configured to use adguard -> you can turnoff adblock features if it interferes with any of your stuff.

I would also suggest to use two instances of adguards - one as backup two instances of NPM.

garyfirestorm··on Uploading Pirated Books via BitTorrent Qualifies as Fair Use, Meta Argues
The ideology has an inherent toxicity to it, along with a self own, doubling down on mistakes that would harm you and the others in longer run, embracing silly ideas and a general disregard for niceties. Would have been nice if they didn’t hurt their own fans like that could be simply phrased as ‘being MAGA’
garyfirestorm··on Judge orders government to begin refunding more than $130B in tariffs
> Did they know it was illegal

it doesnt have to be black and white. they knew enough to spin up a business that when it is overturned they could make money... which means they knew the probability was high.

garyfirestorm··on AI is making junior devs useless
lol no i don't.
garyfirestorm··on Everett shuts down Flock camera network after judge rules footage public record
When passive monitoring turns into analytics -> public watching turns into stalking.

it’s ok for me to observe a person in public park - it should be ok to watch camera for an activity

But if it’s not ok for me to stalk someone I think it should be illegal for a network of cameras to watch my movements too!

Slapping AI onto stalking is still stalking.

garyfirestorm··on Ask HN: How are you all staying sane?
Make sure to fix sleep issues. Maniac state + lack of sleep can get you in some serious trouble. Disconnect for a while.
garyfirestorm··on AI is making junior devs useless
Yes and no. Often times managers are now asking ask Claude code to write it but I want it delivered tomorrow. This leads to us forcing to use LLM generated code without enough time to review or understand it.

because citizenship is not a prerequisite for defending human rights and differentiating right from wrong. this isn't general election and they are not voting, non citizens still enjoy the rights under the constitution like 1A.

garyfirestorm··on I hate AI side projects
The author doesn’t pinpoint on why exactly he hates the AI side projects. Is it because they are low effort? But then he also says his past hobby projects could be done today in few hours with Claudecode.

garyfirestorm··on Audio is the one area small labs are winning
not sure about the irony - you can't really expect rebels to start their own weapons manufacturing lab right from converting ore into steel... these things are often supplied by a large manufacturer (which is often a monopoly) why is it any different for a startup to tap into nvidia's proverbial shovel in order to start digging for gold?
garyfirestorm··on Fix the iOS keyboard before the timer hits zero or I'm switching back to Android

garyfirestorm··on The TSA's New $45 Fee to Fly Without ID Is Illegal
It was about immigration. I remember around 2015 when I was on F1 visa - in Michigan - you could get drivers license and it would expire when your visa expired. However my few lucky friends in NY/NJ/CA? Just got blanket 5yr expiry on their licenses from the day of renewal. I.E. their visas could expire well before their ‘IDs’ could. RealID was introduced to eliminate these discrepancies. And to get a realId now you need to show your visa documents/approvals.
garyfirestorm··on xAI joins SpaceX
Looking at cyber truck I can’t help but disagree with you. Absolutely questionable design choices. From top to bottom.

garyfirestorm··on The (Overdue) Collapse of the Most Overhyped Company [video]
He’ll pivot to robotics and AI. Rinse and repeat for another decade. Goes without saying Tesla as an automaker is an old story. Don’t expect new products/ expect bad quality, bad service and issues.
garyfirestorm··on LM Studio 0.4
Everyone seems to be missing important piece here. Ollama is/was a one click solution for non technical person to launch a local model. It doesn’t need a lot of configuration, detects Nvidia GPU and starts model inferencing with single command. Core principle being your grandmother should be able to launch local AI model without needing to install 100 dependencies.
