garretruh··on Amazon's homepage was down
Fired is more like it. Though I doubt Jeff Bezos is the kind of guy to do something like that.
garretruh··on Really hate clone ideas so I made this site to call them out
Like the idea. One thing to consider: it's a little hard to discern the product/service. Take, for example, this one: http://cl.ly/image/0P0Y1q1r3p0N. Without mousing over the element, it's impossible to tell what the product/company/service is. (ICBW, but isn't that a Chrysler in the background?)
garretruh··on Elon Musk: Boeing 787 battery fundamentally unsafe
While I have enormous respect for Elon Musk, I would hope that Boeing engineers have just as thorough an understanding of the workings and safety implications of Lithium-ion batteries. Though Tesla's engineering is admittedly much more focused around battery technology, Boeing has decades of experience with aircraft electrical systems.
garretruh··on Mega will only succeed if developers take the fall
As for free Gmail storage, it is ~10.0926 GB as of 2:35 CST. At least according to the Gmail sign-in page.
garretruh··on A time for silence
What (in your opinion) might he eventually regret? Honestly curious.
garretruh··on Show HN: A DNS server that removes the top million domains
I can only imagine malicious uses for this. "Sorry, you're no longer allowed to access Google, Facebook, Twitter, or Wikipedia." Not that that is entirely a bad thing.
garretruh··on Snow Fall: The Avalanche at Tunnel Creek
It's called a feature. If you want your news quick and easy, read Google News headlines.
garretruh··on Letter to TEDx India Licensees
Yeah, seems kind of suspicious, especially given that it was posted from a guest account.
garretruh··on Microsoft's DroidRage Twitter campaign goes painfully wrong
I think the point he/she is trying to make is that it only became as "real" as it is now after the coverage on news sites yesterday. Then everybody decided to jump on the anti-Microsoft sentiment and share their own supposedly funny #DroidRage's.
garretruh··on A SSD in Your Pocket
It doesn't. You're limited to 25,000 of your own (i.e. not purchased from iTunes) songs.
garretruh··on Show HN: I'm 14, I learned Objective-C, and this is my first iPhone game
That's it. Discourage them right from the start. He (or she) is 14 for crying out loud.
garretruh··on Scott Forstall leaves Apple
Essentially, trying to mimic real world (as in the physical world) applications and appearances. See Calendar and Contacts on iOS for a perfect example of skeuomorphism to the extreme.
garretruh··on Minnesota Gives Coursera the Boot, Citing a Decades-Old Law
At least one (and almost certainly more) company pursuing this. The service WebAssign is used in almost every science class at my high school. 90% of homework is done (and graded) via the site. However, the lack of any "show-your-work" functionality sometimes limits teachers' ability to assist students.
garretruh··on Red Bull Stratos Skydive Rescheduled for today
Yes, and every time a statement's "fact-check" that comes back as false, they move a little closer to the edge.
garretruh··on I introduced my 5yo and 2yo to startx and xmonad. They’re delighted.
I think the whole reasoning behind exposing his children to the command line first and working from there is to give them a better understanding of the fundamentals before moving on to higher level UI. A window manager is the next logical step (as that's where computing actually went next). I agree, introducing a touch screen at a later point in time makes sense, but I think a window manager is both more practical and fits in the progression he's trying to achieve.
