garretraziel··on “The Mess We're In” by Joe Armstrong at Strange Loop [video]
While I agree that his talk is a little bit "disconnected", I think that it served its purpose when I am reading some "think big" discussion that is going on here. While his talk doesn't have one clear topic, it does deliver huge and interesting thoughts.
garretraziel··on Dwarf Fortress 0.40.01
On the other hand, "rogue" part of dwarf fortress is much easier than "dwarf fortress" part.
garretraziel··on Call me maybe: MongoDB (2013)
I'm building small application using Node.js and MongoDB and I'm planning to host it on Openshift or Heroku. All that hate that MongoDB takes here on HN makes me reconsider technologies I am using.

I will not have many relations in my database (model User, model Document, User owns Document... and that's all) so I thought that NoSQL databases will do. Plus, MongoDB lets me use GridFS - I'm planning to store pdf presentations in it.

If I should drop MongoDB, what other technology should I use? Or should I fall back to Postgres + ORM and manage my files in filesystem manually?

I don't want to start a flame, I am looking for an advice. I have considered MongoDB to be "good enough" as GridFS lets me store my files without a hassle, but after all that I read on the Internet, now I am not so sure.

garretraziel··on Elon Musk, Stephen Hawking and fearing the machine
I think that I read somewhere that AGI wouldn't kill us all for the sake of killing us all - it would always be byproduct of something it will do.
garretraziel··on What Happened When We Tried to Publish a Real Paper Investigating Time Travel
This reminds me of xkcd's "what if" Project.
garretraziel··on Dijkstra on Dutch TV (2000)
I completely agree, but is "getting it rigt the first time" really THAT important?
garretraziel··on OpenStreetMap is now navigation-ready
They of course DO work outside the US.
garretraziel··on I'm About as Good as Dead: The End of Xah Lee
This is mostly unfortunate. As an Emacs user, I have read a lot of his tutorials and they are very good, I will consider buying one of them (but I don't understand; does or doesn't he accept money through paypal?).

On the side note, he should really edit that bank account screenshot. These downloaded images really looks like they were downloaded from imgur. And if you type those filenames into imgur...

garretraziel··on DuckDuckGo Goodies
If you try next.duckduckgo.com and type "!", it automatically shows all bangs you can use.
garretraziel··on Brendan Eich Steps Down as Mozilla CEO
I have to disagree. Let aside if it is right or wrong to support homophobic groups. Essence is that many people would hate him for what he did - and I think that it is bad to have CEO who is hated for his personal opinions.

I live in Czech Republic and our past president was global warming denier, he wrote several books about that. I will not judge if he was right or not, but because he had so strong and controversial opinions, it shed bad light on our country.

I think that when you are "public person" or spokesman, you have to be very careful about what you do and say, because then you aren't hurting only yourself, but whole organisation you represent.

garretraziel··on Microsoft unveils Windows Phone 8.1 with personal assistant Cortana
Cortana will work offline? I didn't think something like this was possible, because I was sceptical whether standard smartphone was capable of all that natural language processing...
garretraziel··on Moto 360
I hate it. It is selfish, but I hate it.

Problem is, I love real watches. More specificaly, I love mechanical watches. You know, those little miracles with cogs and spring in it. And jewel bearings. And balance wheel. See-through back, where you can watch movement running.

And I love technology at the same time. I think that this is the future of technology, everybody will now jump onto bandwagon of smartwatches. But I don't want to replace my beatiful mechanical watches with something like this. I hate that I love watches, because otherwise I would be thrilled to put something like this on my wrist. But I'm not.

garretraziel··on Android Wearables: Developer Preview
Yes they do... but not watch designers. Really, look on some current watches - Omega Speedmaster Professional ("moonwatch") or Rolex Submariner or some IWC watches. Moto 360 looks decent, but it looks like it was designed by mobile phone designers, not watch designers.
garretraziel··on Android coming to wearables
No, it's not like this. Smartphone has distance sensor, but I am not really convinced that the distance sensor would work in this case too.
garretraziel··on No JSON/MAPS interoperability in 17.0?
I don't agree with you. I think that someone can point out problem without providing the solution at the same time.
garretraziel··on Zethos – Speed reading tool in 1 kb
As a Smalltalk enthusiast, I am really glad to see lively-web in actual use.
garretraziel··on A brief introduction to Haskell, and why it matters
Squeak Smalltalk is better in it - you can actually type in arguments of method and a result and it can find you method that, given these arguments, returns this result.

So, for example you can type: 'hello'. 'HELLO' and it finds you 'asUppercase' method of String object.

garretraziel··on Red Hat’s CentOS “acquisition” good for both sides, but ‘ware the Jabberwock
To those wondering, I think that Red Hat doesn't make that much money from SELLING RHEL. It's the support, certifications and those things that are making Red Hat's budget. So CentOS and RHEL aren't really competing products. But Red Hat can now offer support even to CentOS customers.

(I'm Red Hat employee.)

garretraziel··on Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy Salamander)
GNOME only moved it into gnome-tweak-tools. Not sure with Unity though.
