garbawarb··on Ultra-processed foods make up more than 60% of us kids' diets
Is pizza? Basic pizza is just wheat, mozzarella, and tomato sauce. It's cooked, but I guess cooking is a process.
garbawarb··on Ozempic shows anti-aging effects in trial
I wonder how it compares to Adderall.
garbawarb··on Are we the baddies?
Yeah... 10% is my usual tip and nobody's ever yelled at me, confronted me, or responsed in any way. I'm sure it's happened once to someone somewhere at some point in time but this expectation that you're going to get confronted is silly. Humans are non-confrontational by default.
garbawarb··on Meta announces Oakley smart glasses
Looks cool but I just hate the heaviness and feel of wearing acetate. If they ever make titanium smartglasses I'll be all over them.
garbawarb··on Waymo's market share in San Francisco exceeds Lyft's
You don't need to tip Uber/Lyft drivers. It's always been optional.
garbawarb··on Marines being mobilized in response to LA protests
I love seeing when someone finds the right place for them. Why is LA so great for you?
garbawarb··on Defending adverbs exuberantly if conditionally
Brevity is wit.
garbawarb··on Fleurs du Mal
I'd like to buy this in book form. Can anyone recommend an english translation?
garbawarb··on Air pollution fell substantially as Paris restricted car traffic
So only 1.5% of Paris voted against this? It sounds like they're going by the will of the voters.
garbawarb··on Japanese scientists create new plastic that dissolves in saltwater overnight
Simply wrap it in a protective plastic packaging.
garbawarb··on Paris residents vote in favour of making 500 more streets pedestrian
I guess that means the other 96% are cool with the result either way.
garbawarb··on Why do people keep buying printers they hate?
All the Brother-is-hassle-free praise is surprising to me. I've had endless network issues with mine.
garbawarb··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
My company is actively in the PERM process for me, but I'm worried that things will go wrong (for example, failed recruitment) and I'll need to start from scratch. Would it be advantageous to apply for NIW on my own, and could there be any problem with doing both at the same time?
garbawarb··on Do you want to be doing this when you're 50? (2012)
The problem though is that there's not much opportunity for an engineer to work anything less than full-time. Especially one on a work visa like me. It seems that joining a less-demanding company but stll working full-time is the nearest option. Also, the work visa means I can't earn any income from outside of my employer.
garbawarb··on Do you want to be doing this when you're 50? (2012)
A lot of people here have commented who want to be (or are) doing this when they're 50+ because they love it, but what about those who don't?

I'm 29, I've been an engineer for 6 years and have ended up with a high income and a lot of cash in the bank (not retirement-level, but more than 98% of people my age). Yet I've realized that the main reason I've chosen this career is because it provides the fastest path to wealth. If I were choosing a career purely based on what I wanted to do it would be something in the arts, likely film or music, but the arts are a famously difficult way to make any stable income. Same for starting my own company in the tech space, I think I'd enjoy running a company more than being an engineer. It's hard to walk away from a high, stable income since I'm not from a wealthy family. Lately I've been doing some soul searching and a part of me wants to quit and start fresh doing my own thing.

garbawarb··on Shutting down my legal torrent site after 17 years
This is fascinating to me, and sad to hear. Have you ever written about the history and starting up of your website from the business side of things, aside from the shutdown? I've thought about starting a similar business and would love to hear more.
