garbawarb··on I am directing the Department of War to designate Anthropic a supply-chain risk
Are they legally required to agree to a new contract? Which law says this?
garbawarb··on I am directing the Department of War to designate Anthropic a supply-chain risk
Singapore? The UK, apparently, since they don't do these things?
garbawarb··on I am directing the Department of War to designate Anthropic a supply-chain risk
This sounds like a message to would-be founders: don't base your company in the US. The strongest markets to do business are the ones with the most freedom from government meddling. In the US, big government is happy to use its power to crush private enterprise that it doesn't like.
garbawarb··on Layoffs at Block
I'm a senior in NYC, considering changing jobs but haven't pulled the trigger. I've got a good amount of reachouts from finance recruiters and small-to-medium sized startups but haven't heard anything from the established players (admittedly I haven't been looking).
garbawarb··on Layoffs at Block
To anyone who's been looking for SWE jobs lately, has this been your experience?
garbawarb··on Layoffs at Block
I miss those days. It may have been economically silly but there was so much optimism, especially in the tech world.
garbawarb··on Layoffs at Block
Does anyone know what teams are affected?

I wonder if this is the beginning of a new wave of layoffs across the industry like we had in 2022.

garbawarb··on Nano Banana 2: Google's latest AI image generation model
Advertising? "We don't want to pay an artist" goes a long way for a small business with a limited budget.
garbawarb··on An AI doomsday report shook US markets
> Speculative as it is, the scenario has unnerved investors. The S&P dropped more than 1% on Monday, and the software component of the index fell to its lowest level since Trump’s “liberation day” tariff announcement in April. Doubtless some of the wobble is attributable to Trump’s latest tariffs, but Uber, American Express, Mastercard and DoorDash, specifically named in Citrini’s report, all lost between 4% and 6%.

So how exactly does the article attribute the movements of the market to this Substack post? What is the proof that this was the cause? Journalism usually deals with proof of what it says but I don't see any in articles like this.

garbawarb··on Silicon Valley can't import talent like before. So it's exporting jobs
For the first time I've been hearing "this job is only available for US citizens and permanent residents" in recruiter reachouts, and these are for jobs that don't need anything like a security clearance. It's surprising because a TN status (my current status) is trivially easy to get.
garbawarb··on 99% of adults over 40 have shoulder "abnormalities" on an MRI, study finds
Interesting. What happens at 40 to make MRIs no longer accurate?
garbawarb··on Big tech stocks lose billions as AI spending fears hit valuations
So tech stocks are down because AI is a nothingburger. And non-tech stocks are down because AI is going to destroy their business. So which is it?
garbawarb··on Dark web agent spotted bedroom wall clue to rescue girl from abuse
Yes, and if Facebook didn't exist, presumably these images connecting the abuser to the victim wouldn't have been available anywhere for the investigators to find.
garbawarb··on Dark web agent spotted bedroom wall clue to rescue girl from abuse
> From that list of 40 or 50 people, it was easy to find and trawl their social media. And that is when they found a photo of Lucy on Facebook with an adult who looked as though she was close to the girl - possibly a relative.

It sounds like Facebook was a huge boost to the investigation despite that.

garbawarb··on Robert Duvall has died
Would you recommend the book or series?
garbawarb··on Beginning fully autonomous operations with the 6th-generation Waymo driver
Cruise was always run as a separate business from GM until they shut it down. I think they got too nervous about committing to the Silicon Valley investment style: high capital, high risk, long time horizon, high reward.
garbawarb··on Beginning fully autonomous operations with the 6th-generation Waymo driver
I'm forever baffled that GM gave up on Cruise just as soon as Waymo was proving that autonomous driving is feasible.

(Disclaimer: former Cruise employee)

garbawarb··on The US is flirting with its first-ever population decline
Heck, they could just make it easier for documented immigrants to live here.
garbawarb··on Layoffs Surge 118% in January – The Highest Since 2009
Highest since 2009 so far.
garbawarb··on Opus 4.6 uncovers 500 zero-day flaws in open-source code
Have they been verified?
garbawarb··on Anthropic AI tool sparks selloff from software to broader market
I kind of imagine more people going off and building their own companies.
garbawarb··on xAI joins SpaceX
Their CEO is revolting.
garbawarb··on I Test Drove a Chinese EV. Now I Don't Want to Buy American Cars Anymore
Remember when the West competed by making better products?
garbawarb··on Y Combinator website no longer lists Canada as a country it invests in
I wonder if Canada needs a Delaware. Delaware's system works because they have such a small population that offering a low cost and high volume solution to the rest of the country is the right strategy. I could see a case for a smaller Canadian province like Newfoundland or PEI doing the same.
garbawarb··on Y Combinator website no longer lists Canada as a country it invests in
Why are those more common for noncitizens?
garbawarb··on Y Combinator website no longer lists Canada as a country it invests in
Can you still earn the same salary as you would in the US though?
garbawarb··on Y Combinator website no longer lists Canada as a country it invests in
The lifestyle difference is real but the income difference is enough to sway most people to the US. If Canada can close the gap on that I'd say it can become an even more attractive place for global tech talent than the US because of its overall better livability.
garbawarb··on Y Combinator website no longer lists Canada as a country it invests in
Israel, like the parent poster said, is even smaller. I don't think an Israeli founder would have trouble moving to the US if they wanted to.
garbawarb··on Y Combinator website no longer lists Canada as a country it invests in
Like which?
garbawarb··on Y Combinator website no longer lists Canada as a country it invests in
Not at all. The only benefit Canadians get compared to others is the opportunity to work for employers on TN status which is a temporary non-immigrant-intent work visa. You're not even allowed to want to immigrate if you have one. And given the political climate there's a chance it will go away at any time.
