gamegod··on How we upgraded our 4TB Postgres database
If you're running a 4 TB Postgres database, but you still have to worry about this level of maintenance, what's the value proposition of using a hosted service? There's usually insane markup on any hosted Postgres instance.

If you want to pay multi-thousands dollars a month for a database server, it's WAY cheaper just to slap a server with a ton of drives in colocation.

gamegod··on Aquafaba
Does anyone know if that liquid is jam packed full of Bisphenol A, since it's stewing in direct contact with the edges of the can? I'm always suspicious of that.
gamegod··on Arecibo telescope, on the brink of collapse, will be dismantled
No, it's a reflection of the state of US infrastructure.
gamegod··on Global circulation of influenza viruses in 2020
This is completely irrelevant to the linked data.

Fixed that for you.

gamegod··on New York City thinks up to half of restaurants will close permanently [pdf]
You seem to be mixing up cause and effect. The reason COVID hasn't been so bad is because of all the special preventative measures. It's super contagious, still sends 10% of people to hospital, and is killing 1-2% of people. Sitting in the presence of strangers for hours in an enclosed space is a great way to transmit COVID, and this is why indoor dining must be closed.
gamegod··on Celery 5.0
Yeah, this bit me in the ass too. They close bugs that are valid but they just don't want to fix, so looking at their bug tracker gives you a misrepresentation of their project. It's a poor practice, and I've been hit by bugs in production that were closed in their bug tracker.

Also, you really need to read the fine print to understand the quirks of every backend (eg. Redis) when using Celery. For me, this plus the above means I'll never use Celery again.

gamegod··on Apple Accidentally Approved Malware to Run on macOS
When did this change? You need to codesign/notarize your application lest users get the super scary warning that tells them to move it to trash when they try to run it. Apple literally tells your users your app is garbage unless you pay for this. Definition of a shakedown.
gamegod··on Beta users of Starlink get downloads of 11 to 60 Mbps
The reason we don't use space observatories as much anymore is because we have adaptive optics now and don't need them. The concerns of astronomers are real. It's not for Starlink to ruin our ability to observe the sky for all of humanity. Incredible entitlement.
gamegod··on A mysterious company’s Covid-19 papers in top medical journals may be unraveling
As a reference, here's an observation study published in NEJM on May 7th, that wrote:

https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2012410?query=fe...

> "In this analysis involving a large sample of consecutive patients who had been hospitalized with Covid-19, the risk of intubation or death was not significantly higher or lower among patients who received hydroxychloroquine than among those who did not..."

Note that this study did not use any of the data from Mehra et. al. You see all the other studies that found similar results by reading the references.

gamegod··on A mysterious company’s Covid-19 papers in top medical journals may be unraveling
This is a garbage analysis that ends up with a plug for vitamins and t-shirts. You don't write off a journal for making mistakes. Retraction is part of the scientific process.

What this YouTuber failed to mention is that there were already a couple of other studies before this one that reached the same conclusion - that there was no evidence of it working for COVID-19, or that it potentially made things worse in the most sick patients. The retraction of a single paper doesn't invalidate the body of evidence (albeit small) provided by other papers prior to it.

gamegod··on The Intel Comet Lake Core i9-10900K, i7-10700K, i5-10500K CPU Review
It's the motherboard prices that will make the difference. Intel motherboards are always super overpriced, and you have to buy a new mobo with every generation.
gamegod··on A small restaurant owner on Google, DoorDash, and Grubhub
I know when I try to use my competitors trademarks in my Google Adwords, Google rejects my ads every time. It's typical Google bullshit that DoorDash gets a free pass here.
gamegod··on Rawdrawandroid: Build Android apps in C
They want you to use Google Sign-In, so Google can lock your users into their SSO. The more locked into the Google ecosystem people are, the easier it is for them to keep their search ad monopoly in the long term.

gamegod··on Substantial undocumented infection facilitates rapid dissemination of SARS-CoV2
You guys are missing the point. It will be very difficult to access healthcare for the next 3 months because the system is going to be so overwhelmed by COVID-19 cases. There will be no available hospital beds.
gamegod··on Coronavirus Work from Home Model
No and no.

1) Epidemiological papers usually estimate the true number of cases, based on an estimate of the percentage of cases getting tested. The definitely include this in their outlook, and have correctly predicted the outcome of the epidemic in China. Saying "nobody" is doing that is totally incorrect. There's literally people's jobs who it is to model epidemics, who have PhDs and devoted their entire careers to it. The amount of ignorance about the quantity and quality of scientific research out there just floors me.

2) We do know now that kids are just as susceptible to be infected as adults [1]. We don't know exactly what their role in transmission is, but you could conservatively assume that they probably spread it just as much as everyone else (speculation).

Some clinical characterization of cases in children are available in refs [2] and [3]

gamegod··on Coronavirus Work from Home Model
Now you're being sensationalist - Those places that stopped their local epidemics were A) the first ones to have the epidemics, and B) took effective action to stop it.

Saying there's "no visible end in sight" is meaningless in this context. If you model the epidemic, as many researchers have, you will see when the end of the epidemic is.

gamegod··on Corona Simulator
You don't need to rely on the data by the Chinese government, for several reasons:

1) Lots of epidemiological papers about the Wuhan epidemic use data from phone carriers (not the government) to track the spread and make predictions, and they were generally pretty good with their forecasts. The numbers reported by the government are consistent with the forecasts from scientists.

2) The numbers reported by China are also consistent with the spread observed _outside_ of China. You can't lie about the numbers because every other country would detect an anomalous number of imported cases. (Case point - In Canada, we're importing way more cases from the US than you'd expect if there were actually only 1200 cases in the US. This is rather because the US is lagging so far behind in testing, rather than outright deception.)

The absolute numbers don't even matter that much - what matters is the trend and the number of new cases going to zero. Look at epidemiology paper - they always assume only like 10% of infected cases are tested and confirmed. The epidemic really is coming to a close in China, still gaining momentum in Europe, and coming in a big way soon to North America.

Looks good, Sam! I'm going to tuck this away and use it next time I need a tree view.
gamegod··on Bootstrap Treeview
It's a problem with HN - Since the average user can't downvote, these trash troll comments stay at the top and derail any conversation, when they should just be insta-downvoted into oblivion.

You're totally right, but everyone should just ignore the idiot troll and move on.

gamegod··on Scientists claim to find HIV virus-like insertions in the 2019-nCov [pdf]
This is evidence, but it requires corroboration from other evidence. Peer review doesn't provide additional evidence - it's just a sober second opinion that lends credence (or not) to the proposed evidence and interpretation.

Just wanted to clarify the language here.

I wonder how much they paid to gag the researchers for the 17 months it took them to fix this.
gamegod··on Linus Torvalds: Git proved I could be more than a one-hit wonder
Git was popular before GitHub was a thing. Git was taking over the open source world back when everybody was on SVN, and people were just hosting their Git repos themselves. GitHub made Git ubiquitous for all types of developers and accelerated that adoption further, giving us the near-monopoly we see today.

gamegod··on Atari VCS Lead Architect Quits, Claims Six Months of Design Work Went Unpaid
There's an 881 page thread of people ripping this "Atari" project to shreds on the AtariAge forums. People could smell the BS even back in 2017: https://atariage.com/forums/topic/266480-new-atari-console-t...

At some point in that thread around summer 2019, a photo of their "prototype" hardware was released, and it's just a stock embedded Ryzen dev board - not custom hardware at all. After 2 years, they had nothing done. It gets even better: They realized their original case design from 2017 was too costly and had to redesign it in Spring 2019: https://medium.com/@atarivcs/atari-vcs-structural-improvemen...

Even in 2019, all they had were renders of both their old and new case designs, and that blog post really goes to show how unprepared they were. Any moron with CAD experience could have told them their original design would have been a nightmare to manufacture/assemble.

gamegod··on Show HN: Rocket Streaming Audio Server
Hi all, author here. I built RSAS as a "drop-in Icecast replacement" after working with a handful of streaming radio companies, who were all impacted by Icecast bugs and missing features. I wanted an alternative with a better foundation, better out-of-the-box support for the modern web (eg. CORS, easy metadata access), and that was easier to integrate with.

As a drop-in replacement, it reads your existing Icecast config file, and writes logs in the same format as Icecast. It doesn't have every feature of Icecast, but all the major ones are implemented (relays, fallbacks, etc), and I've been using it to power my own audio CDN for the last year.

If anyone has any questions, I'd be happy to answer them!
