game-of-throws··on Rust 1.63
Why are you here flaming the Rust devs for having the audacity to dare release a new version of their software, instead of talking to the packagers that distribute years-old versions?

Side note: since memory leaks were deemed safe, there are easier ways to deliberately leak than using reference cycles. The most straightforward are `mem::forget` and `Box::leak`.
game-of-throws··on Disney surpasses Netflix in global paid streaming subscribers
I was on a rollercoaster at Netflixland, but I couldn't enjoy it because an employee was sitting next to me the whole time listing all the rides I should try next.
game-of-throws··on Justin Kan: Web3 games don’t need to lure players with profit
If you were paying taxes, wouldn't this count as income, not capital gains? A programmer doesn't have to deal with capital gains if they buy a laptop and then use it to earn money.

I look forward to the future where North Korean hackers exploit a bug in a smart contract to steal everybody's Fortnite costumes

> CDPR had a NIH problem.

Bit of a tangent, but I don't think that's true. It's just ActionScript with a cute file extension - just like .docx is .xml with a cute file extension.

game-of-throws··on Astro 1.0 – a web framework for building fast, content-focused websites
If that scares you, you must be terrified of modern Linux distros.

Personal preference mostly. rvm/gem/bundle is just a lot to set up and keep in your head compared to running a statically-linked binary. It feels like a relic of a previous era. Plus compiled languages are faster, and massively easier to set up if you have contributors running Windows.

But like sibling said, if you're happy with your setup, keep it.

game-of-throws··on Tornado cash takedown and its repercussions
For those who think this is a good thing: can you explain why people should have access to HTTPS and Tor (web privacy), PGP and Signal (communication privacy), but not Tornado Cash (financial privacy)?

Use any SSG not written in javascript and you'll be fine. Hugo, Zola, Jekyll, etc. Though if I was starting from scratch I might avoid Jekyll just because of the Ruby dependency.
game-of-throws··on Dusting “Attack” via Tornado Cash to Public Wallets
0.1 ETH per address? That's $168 at current prices. Someone is spending a lot of money to prove a point. Where do I sign up to get some of this "dust"?
game-of-throws··on Iran makes first import order using cryptocurrency – report
So far the only places to fully ban cryptocurrency (afaik) have been authoritarian countries like Russia[1] and China[2]. The US banning an emerging tech would not be a good look.

game-of-throws··on Iran makes first import order using cryptocurrency – report
Iran uses USD as well. We can't ban everything that a country we don't like uses. There would be nothing left.
game-of-throws··on New Home Prices Are Starting to Drop
I've been waiting for this to happen!

Now I just have to decide, do I buy a house in 11 months when my lease is up, or do I hope for an extended crash and buy in 23 months?

game-of-throws··on Ask HN: Why did smartphones become a single point of failure?
I'd bet almost everyone is logged into email on their phone. If you can trigger a password reset over email, and can access the 2FA (SMS or TOTP app), you can get into just about anything.
game-of-throws··on Ask HN: Google Search down?
I'd love to see Kagi's traffic stats right about now
game-of-throws··on Ask HN: Google Search down?
I'd use revenue instead of profit, since their expenses don't disappear just because the site is down.

If Google is walking down the street and stops to pick up a million dollar bill, it actually loses money.

game-of-throws··on Ask HN: Google Search down?
Kagi is still working!

TPMs and remote attestation on all platforms. For example, there's no reasonable way to run an adblocker on Android without rooting, and if you do root, many apps e.g. banking apps will refuse to run. The feature is called SafetyNet.

You can tilt any poll any way you want with exaggerated language. Surely you know this, and it's why you biased the question the way you did.

> Should phone carriers be required to divulge text messages to law enforcement who have obtained a proper court order?

vs.

> Should government workers be allowed to spy on your dick pics?

Interesting logic. Would you say the people have also voted for the war on drugs?

The linked press releases disagrees.

game-of-throws··on Starting October 19, storage limit will be enforced on all Gitlab Free accounts
If you build an image for testing on every commit and don't have a retention policy set up, you could be using a massive amount of space without realizing it. I can see why they did this.

To me this feels similar to how most paper cash has traces of cocaine.[1] LEO will seize the cash, but if they re-enter it into circulation the cash becomes legitimate again. You're not liable if you spend the same contaminated dollar bill that a drug dealer once used, but you would be liable if you did business with that drug dealer.

I wonder why the deopt cutoff is 128 and not a nice round number like 256. It seems like switching on the value of a byte would not be that uncommon.
game-of-throws··on Why does gRPC insist on trailers?
> Why Do We Need Trailers At All?

The author convinced they're needed. But I wonder if some sort of error signaling should have been baked into `Transfer-Encoding: chunked` instead. It wouldn't have made sense in HTTP/1.1 since you can just close the connection. But in later HTTP versions with pipelined requests, I can see the use for bailing on one request while keeping the rest alive.
