There's a ghost town in the middle of Silicon Valley too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drawbridge,_California
gaika··on 45 percent of world's wealth destroyed: Blackstone CEO
I'm not a native speaker, but http://www.answers.com/wealth doesn't agree with you either. A company is something you can own, possess, a resource you can use as a tool. When it is bankrupt, I think some real wealth is lost.
gaika··on 45 percent of world's wealth destroyed: Blackstone CEO
When a company goes bankrupt, is wealth destroyed? When creditors are not repaid, is wealth destroyed? When pension fund investors lose their money and would have to retire later, is wealth destroyed? Current stock and bond prices imply that 10-20% US companies will go out of business in the next 5 years.
gaika··on 45 percent of world's wealth destroyed: Blackstone CEO
Not really, most of it was really destroyed - debts not repaid, foreclosures, etc.
gaika··on SEC charges E*Trade, 5 others, for front running
Just think how much they will lose in customer trust because of that. I pulled everything out today.

Being honest to yourself is much harder than it seems. Have you read Ghandi's "Experiments with Truth" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Story_of_My_Experiments_wit... ?
gaika··on Most Dangerous Programming Errors
3) Have you tried named_scope? It solves most of the query building pain for me...
gaika··on Most Dangerous Programming Errors
Rails: problem - who takes care of it - how

1) Input validation - programmer - validates_* and attr_accessible in the models

2) Output validation - programmer - HTML::Sanitize

3) SQL injection - rails - use ? or named_scope to construct complex queries

4) XSS - programmer - do not forget <%= h

5) Command injection - programmer - do not do it

6) Cleartext - programmer - requires_ssl module

7) CSRF - rails - uses authentication_token in all forms

8) Race conditions - rails - single threaded

9) Error info leaks - rails - use production mode

10) Memory - ruby - safe language

The rest are all on programmer - just do not do it.

gaika··on [dead]
Peak of the "suicide" corresponds to the bottom of the stock market in November.
gaika··on Intelligent soldiers most likely to die in battle (WW2 case study)
Another breakdown is needed, but my guess is that it is air force pilots and bomber crew that skew the stats. Read/see "catch 22".
gaika··on Intelligent soldiers most likely to die in battle (WW2 case study)
But there were at least 10 times more soldiers than officers. That means officer's death risk was at least 3 times higher than soldier's. They also mention that average IQ of a soldier that died was 95.
gaika··on Intelligent soldiers most likely to die in battle (WW2 case study)
I bet there will be a study that shows how smarter people lost more during current crisis.
gaika··on Intelligent soldiers most likely to die in battle (WW2 case study)
Statistics :( Just add another variable - officer or soldier - and the conclusion can be reversed. Clearly no causation here: higher percentage of officers died, and officers were smarter.
gaika··on Stocktwits.com Closes Series A

gaika··on SEC Gives Social Investing Site kaChing Green Light To Take On Mutual Funds
Crazy world, we have web2.0 attack of the clones, now in finance:

http://stockpickr.com http://alphaclone.com http://zecco.com, that's not counting virtual stock market games where you can sell you strategies to others.

Funny how people pile on these "top pickers" and create a self-fulfilling prophecy bubble and then wonder where all the money went.

gaika··on Eurisko, The Computer With A Mind Of Its Own
Unit of bogosity is the lenat, named after Douglas Lenat. Like the farad it is considered far too large a unit for practical use, so bogosity is usually expressed in microlenats.

gaika··on 1/3 of Stocks in the S&P 500 are no longer qualified to be included
In the good old days stocks were considered too risky and to compensate for that they had to return more than bonds.

Earnings are a lot easier to fake than dividends that's why some consider dividend rate more reliable indicator than P/E (esp. when comparing with other asset classes). Last time S&P returned more than treasuries was in 1950's.

gaika··on 1/3 of Stocks in the S&P 500 are no longer qualified to be included
It is even worse (or better if you're buying), the dividend yield on S&P 500 is now more than the yield on 10 year treasury bond.
gaika··on SaaS stocks down 50% in 2008, but promising long-term prospects
P/E doesn't mean much for a company that is still growing fast.
gaika··on SaaS stocks down 50% in 2008, but promising long-term prospects
The fall in the shares in these companies has nothing to do with their business.

The overall market is down more than 30%, and technology companies are a lot more sensitive to the market direction than others. This is how Salesforce looks adjusted for market trends: http://whomovedmystock.com/CRM (disclaimer: this is my startup)

gaika··on Ask HN: Please review my startup
Right now it is part of the overall market exposure, but yes, some companies might be more sensitive to it than others.
