Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.

gaetgu··on Sunsetting Atom
Yep. I am waiting for its plugin support to come out to start really using it but I have it installed and I use it from time to time. It is pretty nice!
gaetgu··on The Linux cheat command
Awesome. I was going to ask the same thing, but this answers everything that I was going to ask. Thanks!
gaetgu··on Blender shader-based halftone CMYK offset printing emulation process
I follow the creator on Twitter and I am pretty sure that there are a couple of examples of animation that he has posted.

EDIT: here's the link:

gaetgu··on Ask HN: People who use different emails everywhere, who sold you to spammers?
This is one hundred percent the problem. I got my address back when gmail was invite-only (so its super simple), so I get tons of emails meant for other people.
gaetgu··on Tell HN: I'm 18 years old today
No one is ever ready for kids. Wait until your spouse or partner agrees that they want kids, and go for it.
gaetgu··on λ-2D: An exploration of drawing as programming language
No, but that is probably because such a thing hasn't ever really been needed. To be a reasonably good product, it would probably need to parse the language to show both an actual pixel-for-pixel difference and a what-is-practically-different diff. Merging seems next to impossible with more complex programs, unless there could be an art->program->art program. The problem with that is that it would (probably) destroy any comment art or organization that was in the program before. The more I think about it, the more I think that a merge for this sort of file would be a really cool semester project for a comp sci class.
gaetgu··on CodeEdit: Building a free, open-source code editor for macOS
I think the biggest issues are slow computers and non-native apps (which intersect in a lot of places)

Slower computers can have issues running electron apps such as VSCode, which native apps (mostly) fix.

Native apps are also generally nicer to use (on mac) as they break up the flow of the way things look less.

gaetgu··on Show HN: HN Avatars in 357 bytes
And I think yours is an upside-down helicopter!
gaetgu··on Show HN: HN Avatars in 357 bytes
Truly unacceptable. (I look like an alien head!)
gaetgu··on The Arc Language Forum
As far as I know, yes. I think (though I am not sure) that hacker news was a sort of test for the arc language.
gaetgu··on The Arc Language Forum
I don't think it deviates much (if at all) from common lisp, except that it has BIFs for web development. Hacker News was created using arc, as was the arc forum.
gaetgu··on Ask HN: Single-person creations that have stood the test of time?
Exactly this. I think that git is only popular currently because everyone else is using it. (That and GitHub).
gaetgu··on Russian forces invade Ukraine after Putin orders attack
I doubt it. I really don't think he would choose a nuclear option, but rather an option in which his Russian troops fight NATO to the very end, something like Japan in the end of WWII. Except that this time, we can't use nukes.
gaetgu··on Tell HN: GitHub Appears to Be Down
I am having intermittent issues with it. I was having issues with the whole site first but now it only seems to be affecting GH pages. I am in the Albuquerque area.
gaetgu··on I built a system that takes pictures of all the airplanes that fly over my house
clouds, birds, leaves, etc.
gaetgu··on Ask HN: Who wants to collaborate?
It actually looks like they use photos.

gaetgu··on A submarine's weakness: its software?
IIRC the military actually got a private extension to XP's EOL from Microsoft just so that they don't have to change all that tech.
gaetgu··on Covid-19: stigmatising the unvaccinated is not justified
> Or on the flip side, we can keep describing it as what it is, i.e an illness which largely inconveniences the vaccinated and jeopardizes the lives of those who are not.

Well actually, it largely inconveniences the unvaccinated /and/ the vaccinated. The difference in severity comes with age. Older people and babies are far more susceptible to the virus than are children and adults.

The amount of people who truly can't vaccinate is probably small enough that someone who is exercising their right to choose is probably not going to take beds from those who could not get the vaccine.

gaetgu··on Show HN: Pony – a messenger for mindful correspondence
I somewhat agree. I also think that sometimes going backwards is exactly what people like. For instance, mechanical keyboards are pretty old and largely replaced, but so many people like them so much that they are willing to spend a lot of money on them.
gaetgu··on We are recreating the entire planet in Minecraft
It certainly would be possible, though I am not sure how they are doing it. More likely there is a server constantly running and backing up data, that people can join and make edits in real-time.

EDIT:

After looking at the website a bit more, it appears that there is a sort of VCS that is managed by the admins. Users make changes and send them to the admins, and if they are OK then they get merged into the main world.

gaetgu··on Investigators say they've finally identified the Zodiac Killer
One hundred percent. That is something that, to my knowledge, was not known before. If it is indeed true then it would bring some interesting questions along with it.
gaetgu··on Taiwan Navy launches 'carrier killer' with 28 missiles
That is how it will start, anyways. The US will almost certainly get involved, and possibly NATO if things get too dicy.
gaetgu··on US special operations vets carry out daring mission to save Afghan allies
To my understanding the operation is done. That makes it safe to report on.
gaetgu··on Vieb – Vim Inspired Electron Browser
There are several differences. For one, this browser implements a WHOLE lot more than the vimium extension. While vimium just adds vim key mappings, vieb is an entire vim-styled browser. It also has some nice things such as built-int split screens and adblocker.

For some people, Vimium is absolutely a better experience, but if you want a really minimal, vim-style browser give it a try!

gaetgu··on Fast Hello World
Not my own work but a friend's.
gaetgu··on R/NoNewNormal has been quarantined
I don't think that he is implying that COVID == 1984, but rather that there are some massive (surface-level) similarities between the handling of the COVID pandemic and general US policies and the policies in 1984.
gaetgu··on Affinity 1.10
oh my goodness that is an absolutely massive file! I think that at this point serif is just bored and thinking of edge cases to fix.
gaetgu··on SpriteStack Voxel Editor
works on safari 15.0. Might be an issue with the sight being overvisited so the server was being overloaded
gaetgu··on Third member of U.S. FDA advisory panel resigns over Alzheimer’s drug approval
Is anyone else getting some "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" vibes? Questionable Alzheimers drug etc. etc.
gaetgu··on Ask HN: You can reinvent browser UI technologies, what would you do differently?
I feel like it would be easier to keep code looking clean etc. It also would be easier for newer devs to learn/use if they could do something like the right-click style edit that Xcode has.
