Oh you mean like the Middle East where it’s still legal? Or Africa where it’s still legal? When you want me to look up dates, should my research be when various American Indian tribes made it illegal?

My point with all of this is that humanity in general sucks. We only get better due to active, willful improvement.

The Chinese don’t support free trade. Why should the US support free trade with China? Why not embargo them until such time as China opens up? This isn’t a hypocritical contradiction. The US supports free trade with those who support free trade. They suppose power imbalances with those who support power imbalances.

Please tell me which of the tribes that lost land to the US never stole land from another? Please show me a land in the world that never had slavery. Please tell me the origin of the English word “slave”. Please explain what your last sentence means.

There is a backlash to the heavy handedness of DEI. You can’t freeze out white males simple because they are white males. You need to remove barriers to entry based on sexism and such, but you can’t exclude a whole large class of people because that class had it good in the past. That gets you South Africa.

gadflyinyoureye··on Drugmaker to testify on why weight-loss drugs cost 15x more in the US
More than half of all gun deaths are suicide related. The US is middle of the pack in suicides per capita, which I interpret to mean removing all guns would not significantly reduce suicide per capita.

Also death by alcohol impacts more than just the dead person. There is massive emotional and economic impacts. There is lost time and productivity by both the dead guy and survivors. For the sake of economic wellbeing we need to out law any and all things that raise the cost of healthcare.

Everyone should be required to join Government or healthcare provided zoom meetings where we are all watched exercising in unison.

Actually health improved under prohibition. https://www.vox.com/the-highlight/2019/6/5/18518005/prohibit...

The provider of health care can require that individuals stop indulging in certain practices. In the EU they can say you stop drinking or no health care. A person would then be free to find an alternative provider of health insurance. Maybe the EU countries would allow private insurance.

gadflyinyoureye··on Drugmaker to testify on why weight-loss drugs cost 15x more in the US
That’s the thing about socialized medicine. The government should put limits on what citizens are allowed to do because it impacts the bottom line.

In the US more people die per year of alcohol related diseases than by guns (1) (2). If we’re going to try to remove people’s rights to self defense, we need to remove people autonomy to purchase alcohol. The government would save billions of dollars a year on treatments if they just prohibit it.

The same goes for cigarettes, highly processed foods, and high fructose corn syrup. All of these should be banned because they lead directly to obesity, which costs trillions of dollars over a 10 year period. As the EU and even the US budget for their universal healthcare, they need to control the children, I mean citizens under their watch. The citizens show themselves unable or unwilling to control their consumption. Therefore such things should be out right banned.

Depends on how you define real estate interest. If you include the government, the corps might be facing tax ramifications. Many places got property tax deals since they brought people downtown. Those deals might evaporate if the seats aren’t being filled. The corps might face loan modifications if the value of the property drops a certain percentage.

I’m at a lost as to why I should care? Everything comes down to force. Those animals can opine all they want, but humans have the means, motive and opportunity to make them into tasty food. Their conscious or lack there of has no impact.

gadflyinyoureye··on 23% of bachelor's degrees and 43% of master's degrees have a negative ROI
Historically two things happened in the US to make public colleges affordable. The first the State paid a much larger chunk of the tuition than they do now. The second is they had higher standards for attendance than they do now. Those who were good enough go into college. Those who weren’t paid for the their betters’ education.
gadflyinyoureye··on 23% of bachelor's degrees and 43% of master's degrees have a negative ROI
I’ve heard this before, but would like evidence. While I agree that education helps for I don’t want to live in a simple hunter gatherer society, does having everyone trained in worthless degrees like a feminist perspective on underwater basket weaving really make for a more robust and flexible society? One thing I saw during the pandemic was appeals to authority. Seems like as we get more and more degrees, we box out what people are allowed to say because it’s in the wrong thing. This doesn’t seem more flexible.

Nope. That allows them to control the market. Find new ideas that could threaten the big 5 status quo. Fund them. Get them bought by one of the big five (making a good amount of money off that). Let the big five shutdown the competition.

Conflict of interest only applies if you think they’re concerned with the public good. There is no assumption of that here. Every man for himself.

gadflyinyoureye··on EPA rules would force coal-fired power plants to capture emissions or shut down
If the price of energy is too high, you will suffer economically. This will lead to mental health issues. That will lead to suicide and broken homes. That will lead to cycle of poverty and pain across generations.

We’re seeing this play out in children due to Covid lockdowns. Their development was retarded. They started speaking later. They lost functionally three years. Many are pushed through school compounding the issue. At the same time violence at home rose during that time due to stressor.

We need to avoid such policy shortcomings. Administrations at various levels need to think things out. I’m not saying do nothing. I am saying tread lightly while considering many issues.

gadflyinyoureye··on EPA rules would force coal-fired power plants to capture emissions or shut down
Is your suggestion to not look at the full picture when discussing policy topics? If so, how do you propose rational policies? The impact of parties outside of direct political control can offset any good done locally. If the local policies are too restrictive it could have knock on effects that make people’s live materially and psychologically worse.
gadflyinyoureye··on The Basque Country’s Mondragón Corporation is the largest industrial co-op
Definition of capitalism: an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit.

The private owner here is a co-op. Not socialist.

gadflyinyoureye··on The Basque Country’s Mondragón Corporation is the largest industrial co-op
a political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole

The community is normal understood as the complete body politic.

A partnership is not socialistic. Lawyers are capitalistic in most books, but they have partnerships.

The organization of a business doesn’t matter in capitalism. Capitalism, boiled down to private property and market. A co-op competing with other companies largely without price control is just as capitalistic as IBM or Google.

gadflyinyoureye··on The Basque Country’s Mondragón Corporation is the largest industrial co-op
How are co-ops anti-capitalist? They appear to me no different than a shareholder or partnership. Are most law firms socialistic in that they have partners who work for the firm getting a share of its profits?
