gadflyinyoureye··on How Much Do Udemy Instructors Make (2024)
The tech system also allows people to use their gear to make money where they otherwise wouldn’t. Look at Uber. People have a vehicle and free time. If they chose that driving is a better use of their time than watching Netflix, they can make money. Without Uber no one would simply call Alice or Bob for a paid ride.

What has surprised me is the lack of community centric responses. For example, to my knowledge, there is no communalist Uber. This is a system where the drivers are owners in the process. They pay the devs to maintain the system, but people could join and get a better share of the service funds. I take this to mean the Marxists out there just talk a big game.

I hear how Californian laws make building difficult. I also hear that there is housing shortage. Will the complex and possibly convoluted build process limit the restoration of burnt communities?

For example, my understanding is that all new home construction requires solar. I assume that is about $60,000. Then the permitting process is something like $50-100,000. That is a sizable chunk of the insurance money just to meet new code.

I’m not in a good place to check but what the various AI tools recommend?
gadflyinyoureye··on How Well Do LLMs Generate Code for Different Application Domains?
A question might be, will there be new languages? If we start using AI so much that humans lose there job, where will the examples come from on which we’ll train the AI?
gadflyinyoureye··on VW breach exposes location of 800k electric vehicles
The EU will play favorites. There will be a slap on the wrist. Some probation. Maybe a CEO or high level C* person will step down in disgrace with only a few hundred million in severance. Then everything will go back to normal.
gadflyinyoureye··on More men are addicted to the 'crack cocaine' of the stock market
That’s because that’s all we can do. Buffet is an actual investor. His stock position allows him to remake a company if necessary. My stock position might buy some chickie bugs at Wendy’s. I have no direct control over any company I “own” and my voting position and the position of all retail investors is functionally nil.

But this would necessarily block out the poorest voices. While one might say that it is fine to block neonazi red necks, there are other poor people out their voicing valid claims.
gadflyinyoureye··on More than 140 Kenya Facebook moderators sue after diagnoses of PTSD
Any idea what our next steps are? It seems like we stop the experiment of mass communication, try to figure out a less damaging knowledge-based filtering mechanism (presently executed by human), or throw open the flood gates to all manner of trauma inducing content and let the viewer beware.
gadflyinyoureye··on Is the Q source the origin of the Gospels?
>>> None of them are historical work as different events are taking different orderings (or are missing from the other gospels).

Watch out for using that standard. You have to throw out Pompeii and Josephus. Both replay events and move them around in time to make a point.

gadflyinyoureye··on How long til we're all on Ozempic?
Only in the US. Other countries are like 90% less expensive. However, Medicare might try to get better deal since the next round of deal making can include it since the drug is 7 years old.

I’d love to see people going through a real world walk through using such things. Some people who do cookie cutter common tasks find that an LLM can produce their whole code base. But ask it to make a change and what happens?

But it incentivizes making things in the US. This is probably a good thing if the CCP hits hard times.

With what shall we replace it? Communism doesn’t work. It’s so hard to do that it has supposedly never been tried.
gadflyinyoureye··on Guiding principles: How US dietary guidelines contribute to obesity
Go around the block a few times.
gadflyinyoureye··on Guiding principles: How US dietary guidelines contribute to obesity
Where is personal responsibility in this conversation? Most suburbs have side walks. What prevents people from going for walks? Most WFO people could easily buy a used Total Gym from FB marketplace and work out during the business day. People can buy walking pads for the cube in the office for around $160. People could buy healthier foods and cook at home.

All of this takes time but we’re taking about people with cars. They are probably in an economic class where they can afford better food.

gadflyinyoureye··on “Golden Lettuce” is genetically engineered to have higher beta-carotene levels
https://www.npr.org/2021/02/24/967376880/new-evidence-shows-...

Basically our use of fertilizer and weed killer killed off our microbiome in the soil. This lead to soil collapse where churning biological process add nutrients back to the soil.

gadflyinyoureye··on The Continued Trajectory of Idiocy in the Tech Industry
You know the term authoritarian cuts both ways across the political spectrum? Not everything is right wing just because it’s authoritarian.
gadflyinyoureye··on “Golden Lettuce” is genetically engineered to have higher beta-carotene levels
A large part of the problem in the us is soil depletion. We need to regenerate it by allowing roots of various weeds to pull nutrients up to the surface.
gadflyinyoureye··on Will open science change chemistry?
I don’t understand the use of the word floor here. The current US corp tax is 21%. The average corporate tax rate in the EU is 21.3%. Are you saying the corporate tax rate in the EU should be higher?

gadflyinyoureye··on Texas sues GM for unlawfully collecting and selling drivers' private data [pdf]
> You don't think we have the technical ability to determine this, to some degree? We have self driving cars for crying out loud.

Depends on how granular the data is. If it’s second by second telemetry, you could tell this. If it’s an aggregate report for a month, you can’t.

gadflyinyoureye··on Are we living in the age of info-determinism?
Not really. It’s a hyperbolic statement. It needs to be understood as such.

Normally this falls into the realm of moral truth. Or perhaps in a broader sense existential truth. For example: rape is wrong is not an absolute truth. It’s just like your opinion man.

In an entirely materialistic system morality is not universal. It merely the taste of whatever society wants at a time. Morality is ultimately might makes right. If you can enforce your morality through force, your morality wins. If the pro-rape camp could enforce their view, within a few generations we’d all say that the anti-rape camp was on the wrong side of history.

gadflyinyoureye··on How we migrated onto K8s in less than 12 months
Depends on what you mean. Helm will control a lot. You can make the yaml file in any language. Also you can admin it from command line tools. So again any language but often zsh or bash.
gadflyinyoureye··on Declaring 'Crisis,' South Korean Firms Tell Managers to Work 6 Days a Week
I understand that women want to work. However both parents working does not appear to be a tenable position. In a male-centric local like Korea, a man who can pay for a family is a good catch. Hopefully he respects his wife.
gadflyinyoureye··on Declaring 'Crisis,' South Korean Firms Tell Managers to Work 6 Days a Week
That’s where the support part of the sentence comes in. The man can support the wife not working and the children that come with it.
gadflyinyoureye··on Could AI robots with lasers make herbicides – and farm workers – obsolete?
An interesting thing is that many farm workers are migrants. They are needed for a period and then, largely, return to their country of origin.

As the US tightens down on abusive practices, there would be less migrants. Therefore we need tech like this since citizens won’t do the work and if they did they would make the product too expensive.

gadflyinyoureye··on McDonald's to extend $5 value meal in most markets as diners return
We allow things like high fructose corn syrup in greater quantities than the EU. Our wheat has more gluten which is am inflammatory substance. We have dyes that are known carcinogens. We allow higher levels of heavy metals than the EU. We push highly processed foods as the norm. Basically we’ve designed our diets around ease of consumption and profits.
gadflyinyoureye··on McDonald's to extend $5 value meal in most markets as diners return
75% of the FDA’s budget comes from the pharmaceutical industry. I assume that part of that is the food industry. Also the USDA is largely outsourced to the industries it’s supposed to manage. The US is bought and paid for by industries that donate to the Democrats and Republicans. Welcome to America.
