fyrn_··on Why email startups fail
My god this "article" is an inconsistent pile of AI slop. It actively contridicts itself and changes the thesis several times as it goes on and on and on.
fyrn_··on Lateralized sleeping positions in domestic cats
I agree, obviously purely for the scientific value of the sleeping cat pictures of course..
fyrn_··on Show HN: Luna Rail – treating night trains as a spatial optimization problem
Really cool concept. I wish we could have something like this in the US one day.

Wanted to report a small typo, In the 3D model index menu, "Uppder" can be found. I assume this was supposed to read "Upper", as in "above".

I hope to one day ride such a system when I visit europe, best of luck with your project.

fyrn_··on The Gentle Singularity
For Sam Altman, honestly yes. The man has said some truly wild things for the VC
fyrn_··on Google releases Material 3 Expressive, a more emotional UI design system
What the heck is with the blurred image into 2 second load stutter before I'm allowed to see each image? Just an artifact of design on gigabit fiber with and M3 Macbook Pro?
fyrn_··on Static Types Are for Perfectionists
Yeah, that will really help with the auto complete and keystroke by keystroke checking?? What?
fyrn_··on Y Combinator says Google is a monopolist, no comment about its OpenAI ties
That and this was a hearing for the _Google_ antitrust case you can't just randomly wander off topic and self incriminate yourself in this context. Unclear what Techcrunch expected
fyrn_··on Rust’s dependencies are starting to worry me
Hard disagree. Standardized flag parsing is a blessing on us all, do not want to jave to figure out what flag convention the author picked to implement of the many lile one does with non getopt c programs.

Don't disagree with the principle, there are a lot of trivial pythong deps, but rolling your own argument parsing is not the way

fyrn_··on Not a three-year-old chimney sweep (2022)
Part of why people are upsetis because they think this is a much more recent example of the thing they dislike than expected. It's disingenuous to pretend it's only the practice not the context which influences people.
fyrn_··on Show HN: JuryNow – Get an anonymous instant verdict from 12 real people
Easy to fatfinger report on phone with no way to take back or confirm, and it does not even skip the question
fyrn_··on Show HN: I made a C program to create a vanity SHA-1 hash for a text file
On the other hand, where I work we want people like that. Not every place is a CRUD slop shop with joined at the hip SPA that needs more meat for the ginder. Research and specialized optimization roles exist
fyrn_··on Show HN: Bubbles, a vanilla JavaScript web game
I want to be able to replay a level, don't force me into the next level.
fyrn_··on Urban Dead is shutting down
Often, that's intentional. Like with OpenAI and other big players begging for regulation
fyrn_··on What Game Is Jeff Bezos Playing?
Propably that's because trump politically attacks anyone who has an independent thought.

I also expect more informed people are wary of cult of personality type contrarians, like trump or musk, who have weaponized the social media contrarian reaction engine to an extreme

fyrn_··on The hardest working font in Manhattan
They do later talk about the real origin in 1894 in England, with TT&H creating it due to the constraints of their self-built lettering machine to engrave tiny letters on their products
fyrn_··on The origins of 60-Hz as a power frequency
This is covered in some detail in this paper? They even discuss the two engineers who made the purchase and who manufactured the generators..
fyrn_··on Dutch Align with US Export Controls on Some ASML Chip Tools
To be fair America funded a lot of the research. You could argue they should't have taken so much US investment though. It's like when founders give to much control of their company away for the sweet VC cash, nothing is free.
fyrn_··on The Chrome Extension for the Firefox Profiler
The Firefox profiler is actually a good general purspose profile viewer. I use it with C++ and linux perf profiles.
fyrn_··on Denial-of-service attack on Bluesky causes targeted users to become unviewable
I guess this means Bluesky is now big enough to be worth targeting?

What a rapid rise it's been. I expect to see more attacks like this as it goes through that hardening phase every site hits when it reaches a certian size / value

fyrn_··on Zig Software Foundation – Introducing Carmen the Allocgator
I like to think that the strap on wings are a reference to the LLVM dragon. Plushie when?
fyrn_··on GM exits robotaxi market, will bring Cruise operations in house
There is no proof that tesla can make FSD work with the level of safety they would need for a robitaxi service. Especially with camera only.

If they do pull that off, or are able pivot to a fused sensor architecture then I do think their hardware potential will make them a good competitor.

fyrn_··on Microsoft says it's built an Xbox game store on Android but can't launch it
Some weasely words from the Google spokesperson. Microsoft may be able to let users purchase and play games within their app, but google policy does not let them provide and app to do that on the app store. Sure sideloading exists, but it might was well not from a discoverbility and user friendlyness perspective and Google knows it.

Kind of disapointed the article didn't dig any deeper into both sides

fyrn_··on The size of BYD's factory
Efficient yes, generates good quality of life for the average citizen? Not as much. Plenty the west can learn from China on how to do large public works though.
fyrn_··on 'Achilles heel' of antibiotic-resistant bacteria discovered
Increased magnesium dependence compared to baseline bacteria. Unclear if that applies to the whole group or not. That's the buried lead.

Very annoying writing style to the article

fyrn_··on Mozilla is eliminating its advocacy division
Isn't brave just a chromium flavor?
fyrn_··on Why systemd is a problem for embedded Linux
https://chimera-linux.org/ https://chimera-linux.org/docs/faq#what-is-the-projects-take... Is going a really interesting direction with it's service management and login / seat management. Fwiw, I think it's author also has a more gounded perspective on systemd then many others. For Chimera the main issue is systemd's high volume use of gnulibc and gcc extensions, which is a porabiluty issue for Chimera which uses a LLVM toolchain and musl libc (and a bunch of really cool hardening and compiler engineering)
fyrn_··on Mystery drones swarm US Military base
We can't leagally shoot down drones flying over military bases? Can really tell that law was written before the Ukraine war..
fyrn_··on US weighs Google break-up in landmark antitrust case
Arguably a duopoly with Apple, while ads and web browsing are just google? Not sure just a guess.
fyrn_··on Touch Screens Are Over. Even Apple Is Bringing Back Buttons
I wish Tesla (just the whole design department really) shared this sentiment.
fyrn_··on Our Android app is frozen in carbonite
AI alwayd ahd a pretty major apple lean, and from the post's misunderstanding of google drive permissions (global vs file scopes), it's clear that is still true. About not to matter though since they are killing the android app.
