fxj··on What makes quantum computing so hard to explain?
For me the following works best: Superposition is like transparency blending of two images together. For 0.5 each you still can see both images, but of course information can be lost. And a superposition of 1% and 99% gives essentially only one picture even though it is a slightly mixed state. A measurement is then the amount of a single picture in the superposition. And quantum gates are just linear operators on the mixed (superposed) image.
fxj··on Proposed acquisition of ARM Limited by NVIDIA: public interest intervention
To me this seems to be a reaction to the announcement of nvidia to build a one-in-all HPC system. Nvidia already owns Mellanox for the Infiniband Network and their GPUs are the fastest on the market. Now with an additional CPU in their portfolio they could provide a complete Supercomputer in one piece. Think about a HPC-SOC. Supercomputers are still a matter of national security.

Also nvidia will build a new system in switzerland with 20 Exaflops (albeit fp16) which would be the fastest ML/AI system so far.

FTA: With the help of tight coupling between NVIDIA CPUs and GPUs, Alps is expected to train GPT-3, the world’s largest natural language processing model, in mere two days.

Isn't this the goal of an image compression tool? Can we have efficient lossless compression with GoL? That would work with any data. Would it be better than bzip2 or png?
fxj··on Generating conjectures on fundamental constants with the Ramanujan Machine
Their paper is also free to read on arXiv:

https://arxiv.org/abs/1907.00205

"We present two algorithms that proved useful in finding conjectures: a Meet-In-The-Middle (MITM) algorithm and a Gradient Descent (GD) tailored to the recurrent structure of continued fractions. Both algorithms are based on matching numerical values and thus they conjecture formulas without providing proofs and without requiring prior knowledge on any underlying mathematical structure. This approach is especially attractive for constants for which no mathematical structure is known, as it reverses the conventional approach of sequential logic in formal proofs. Instead, our work supports a different approach for research: algorithms utilizing numerical data to unveil mathematical structures, thus trying to play the role of intuition of great mathematicians of the past, providing leads to new mathematical research."

Works as designed. When a pacemaker detects a strong magnetic field it switched itself off.

Pacemaker carriers have to beware of magnetic name bagdes, magnetic toys and of course mobile devices with strong magnets.

Here they tested two small spherical magnets (diameters, 8 and 12 mm), a necklace with magnets, and a magnetic name tag; no single magnet weighed more than 8.3 grams.

fxj··on Termux no longer updated on Google Play
Correct me, but pydroid looks like it is a native python interpreter very much like what termux has to offer.

They write in the description:

- Full-featured Terminal Emulator, with a readline support (available in pip).

- Built-in C, C++ and even Fortran compiler designed specially for Pydroid 3. It lets Pydroid 3 build any library from pip, even if it is using native code. You can also build & install dependencies from a command line.

So when SElinux comes to Android this app will be broken, too.

fxj··on Yamaha’s DX7 synthesiser changed modern music
The DX7 was the first of this kind of digital musical instruments. Every keyboarder at that time had to have one. They were pretty expensive, so Yamaha came out with some cheaper models with 4 oscillators instead of 6. The sound was also very good and the E-Rhodes is still a classic. But soon after that Roland came out with the D50 and that changed everything again, because now you could mix samples and digital oscillators. Yamahas answer to that was the SY77. A monster synth that nobody could program any more.

fxj··on The butcher's shop that lasted 300 years (give or take)
Japan has the most stable environment for companies. In the list of the oldest 5 worldwide the japanese companies were founded in 578 until 771 AD, which makes them more than 1400 years old!

According to a report published by the Bank of Korea in 2008 that looked at 41 countries, there were 5,586 companies older than 200 years.

3,146 (56%) are in Japan

837 (15%) in Germany

222 (4%) in the Netherlands

196 (3%) in France

Of the companies with more than 100 years of history, most of them (89%) employ fewer than 300 people. A nationwide Japanese survey counted more than 21,000 companies older than 100 years as of September 30, 2009.

Hofpfisterei is a chain of bakery shops, headquartered in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. Its business focuses on southern Germany. It has 163 branches and employs about 950 people.

Its history reaches back to the year 1331 when the mill Toratsmühle was mentioned for the first time. It must have existed before that date.

MicroPython differences from CPython

fxj··on MicroPython
Look into ArduPy, which lets you compile arduino libs as loadable python modules:

ArduPy is a combination of Arduino and MicroPython. MicroPython uses the universal Arduino API to control the hardware so that it can be compatible with new platforms quickly. With the help of the aip package manager we provided, you can transform your favorite Arduino library into a MicroPython library.

https://github.com/Seeed-Studio/ArduPy

It works very well on the Seeeduino XIAO (https://www.seeedstudio.com/Seeeduino-XIAO-Arduino-Microcont...) which is arduino compatible and costs $4,90 per piece. You can even get a grove shield for the same price and you are ready to go.

fxj··on MicroPython
I think it should. I have the Maix-Go (https://www.seeedstudio.com/Sipeed-MAix-GO-Suit-for-RISC-V-A...) and it works pretty well. I also own the m5stick-v which has the K210 builtin (https://m5stack.com/collections/m5-core/products/stickv). I connect to them via screen on linux and get a micropython prompt in an xterm and can use it interactively. There is also an IDE available. See also the docs at M5Stack: (https://docs.m5stack.com/#/en/quick_start/m5stickv/m5stickv_...)
fxj··on MicroPython
MaixPy ported Micropython to K210 (a 64-bit dual-core RISC-V CPU with hardware FPU, FFT, sha256 and convolution accelerator). It includes a general-purpose neural network processor, which can do convolutional neural network calculation at low power consumption, for example obtain the size, coordinates and types of detected objects or detect and classify faces and objects. It can load TensorFlow Light Neural Nets.

fxj··on MicroPython
Seeedstudio provides ArduPy for their Wio Terminal which can generate micropython libs from Arduino C Libs. So you can script Arduino Code with micropython on the device. As IDE they provide plugins for MS VisualStudo Code.

fxj··on MicroPython
Check out uiflow from M5Stack. It is a web-IDE which uses micropython for ESP32. You can use the M5stack grove sensors. The IDE generates python code which can be used on any MicroPython Implementation (ESP8266, EPS32, Raspi, CircuitPython, Micro:Bit, you name it) and the python libs are all open source.

I got a pro subscription and I read all my news feeds and twitter through it. I am willing to pay 50 euros per year for such a great service. I also like the android and ios apps which do a great jobs reading news on mobile devices.
fxj··on New threat to the economy: Americans are saving like it's the 1980s
It seems that giving free healthcare, a free place to live, enough food and internet to everyone would be a good idea to stimulate the economy. Jobs would be generated by themselves if people then want a higher standard of living but no longer have to fight to survive.

fxj··on SARS-CoV-2 titers in wastewater are higher than expected from confirmed cases
Just wanted to give the information. The facts speak for themselves.
fxj··on SARS-CoV-2 titers in wastewater are higher than expected from confirmed cases
Conclusions

Human coronaviruses can remain infectious on inanimate surfaces for up to 9 days. Surface disinfection with 0.1% sodium hypochlorite or 62–71% ethanol significantly reduces coronavirus infectivity on surfaces within 1 min exposure time. We expect a similar effect against the SARS-CoV-2.

fxj··on SARS-CoV-2 titers in wastewater are higher than expected from confirmed cases
Abstract

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 is the causative agent of the 2019 novel coronavirus disease pandemic. Initial estimates of the early dynamics of the outbreak in Wuhan, China, suggested a doubling time of the number of infected persons of 6–7 days and a basic reproductive number (R0) of 2.2–2.7. We collected extensive individual case reports across China and estimated key epidemiologic parameters, including the incubation period. We then designed 2 mathematical modeling approaches to infer the outbreak dynamics in Wuhan by using high-resolution domestic travel and infection data. Results show that the doubling time early in the epidemic in Wuhan was 2.3–3.3 days. Assuming a serial interval of 6–9 days, we calculated a median R0 value of 5.7 (95% CI 3.8–8.9)
