fweespeech··on Members of the US Congress Plan to Create a Compliant Version of Bitcoin
You are claiming a situation where 100% of merchants take bitcoin (i.e. everyone) and the scale required is beyond bitcoin by several orders of magnitude.
fweespeech··on Statistics Professor Just Banned by Google: Here Is His Story
I'll admit I still use them but only on my own domain as a non-free account. Its just not safe w/o any kind of support channel.
fweespeech··on Members of the US Congress Plan to Create a Compliant Version of Bitcoin
> That seems to imply that there are no grey or black markets for currencies. This is contrary to what has been observed in history and in some countries today.

Grey and black market currencies exist but the exchange rate is very painful. Its mostly only viable when the fiat currency is unstable (or in the black market) for that reason.

Either way, its largely useless in the country it has been grey/black market'd and they are relying on their ability to convert it elsewhere.

fweespeech··on Members of the US Congress Plan to Create a Compliant Version of Bitcoin
Its not technically possible at this time for this to be true.
fweespeech··on Ask HN: What's your spectacular burnout story?
Lol. People don't like my opinion and idgaf. If they are that offended by it, I removed it even tho I think its stupid.
fweespeech··on Members of the US Congress Plan to Create a Compliant Version of Bitcoin
It does to convert from Bitcoin to Fiat currency.

That conversion gets blocked in an entire country/currency and its effectively useless unless you travel.

fweespeech··on Ask HN: What's your spectacular burnout story?
Normally I'm not attacked for it. And why does indifference mean silence exactly?

Do you genuinely care about every word that you speak and every action you take? Seems tiresome.

fweespeech··on John Scalzi: Being Poor (2005)
Lol :)

And so you get angry at people on the internet that suggests it should be mandatory.

fweespeech··on John Scalzi: Being Poor (2005)
We are all in this world together and some of us do make those contributions.

You are just angry we want you to contribute at all and I feel bad for you. It must hurt going through life thinking no one cares if you suffer or die.

fweespeech··on Video is Coming to Reddit
I just start blacklisting sites with those tbh. Just refuse to use them altogether. No content is worth the annoyance.
fweespeech··on Video is Coming to Reddit
Some of us just genuinely hate autoplay ads.
fweespeech··on Video is Coming to Reddit
> I think it's pretty simple and I always wondered why they didn't do it sooner. Reddit is already one of the most popular sites on the Internet - but since it was just an aggregator it constantly took users off their site. Now they're owning more and more of the content and keeping users there longer. Sure, video is expensive, but now they have a much bigger revenue opportunity. They can't monetize videos they don't host.

They are going to start getting hit with more and more DMCAs, etc. The compliance cost for video and/or audio goes up alot in my experience. Also more likely to be sued (a la Youtube).

For the most part, still pictures, its rare to get any kind of DMCA notice and you basically never get sued.

fweespeech··on Don’t ruin streaming by turning it into cable
Also all the sports games via ESPN.
fweespeech··on Bitcoin just passed $4,000
I am not grumpy but your talking points are based on an ignorance of history many people share.

I genuinely do not care if I convince you. I just don't want people to buy into people like you like they did with people who promoted the past couple of bubbles as sure things.

I understand you are a true believer and nothing I say will convince you.

As far as shorting Bitcoin? I don't expect it to implode in the next 3-6 months.

If you don't expect something to drop substantially in the next 90 days, shorting is a terrible idea.

I am not sure why I should buy a lottery ticket when I can reliably make substantial returns in other markets.

Bitcoin is ultimately intended to facilitate transactions and other crypto currency does it better.

fweespeech··on Tesla raises $1.8B
If it works perfectly and you never have to replace anything, yes.

But you aren't making the sort of "profit" you would if you just put that money into the market.

fweespeech··on Bitcoin just passed $4,000
And yet you are ignorant of a decade long gold bubble and insist these things don't happen.
fweespeech··on Bitcoin just passed $4,000
If you refuse to admit history exists and bubbles have lasted longer than Bitcoin had existed, please stop talking.

The relevance is the duration, not the store of value in question.

https://www.thebalance.com/gold-the-ultimate-bubble-has-burs...

There is another one that co-existed with Bitcoin before dropping like a rock.

https://seekingalpha.com/article/176210-the-recurring-gold-b...

There is a guy in 2009 making similar arguments to you.

Please stop misleading people by pretending Bitcoin is somehow different when it has real competitors that have executed on the idea far more competently.

fweespeech··on Bitcoin just passed $4,000
If transactions were close to instantaneous, it wouldn't be an issue. Buy in USD -> Pay in Bitcoin -> Receive Bitcoin -> Convert to USD needs to happen in under a minute.

However.

Those transactions frequently take a substantial chunk of real time in which time the value fluctuates more than a currency normally would.

fweespeech··on Bitcoin just passed $4,000
> There is nothing special happening now, as there was nothing special when it went from $5->$10, $50->$100, $100->$200, $500->$1000, $1000->$2000. People just want them, and they are a finite resource.

Realistically, Bitcoin is less than 10 years old and bubbles have lasted 10+ years before.

The real estate bubble, for instance, started around 1997 and didn't really complete its popping until 2012. That was 15 years and 10 of which people were 100% oblivious to it.

I'm not saying its nesc. the case in this instance but your "evidence" is no different than what people tried to argue to justify housing prices and such in the past.

Even with your log graph, there is a substantial disconnect from the trend line you drew vs. prices.

fweespeech··on Tesla raises $1.8B
It would lengthen it for me. I buy cheap subcompacts with good gas mileage. My total cost (annually) for fuel is ~$1k at which point the gas is basically free due to the $12k price difference.
fweespeech··on Tesla raises $1.8B
Realistically, Tesla's solar roofs will probably be usable for 30 years before needing to be replaced.

https://solarpowerrocks.com/solar-basics/how-long-solar-pane...

Obviously probably solar but it would last long enough to break even.

fweespeech··on Investigating a ten-year-old estimate that “most social programmes don’t work”
The big secret is social programs are largely to promote stability and prevent civil unrest. The effectiveness at the stated intention is a secondary concern.

We probably are better off with a basic income style system where people can opt-into public (or private) education, public (or private) medical services, and the balance is paid out to them in cash every month. The cost being recouped via cutting existing programs and raising tax revenues to recapture 100% of the value once you have a 6 figure household income.

As someone who pays $1800/month in rent, I believe you.
fweespeech··on SoundCloud faces do-or-die vote by investors
Honestly, an open source solution backed by an automated hosting company (like how Ghost) is probably the best solution.

Charge your customers for DMCA claims and just skim enough off the underlying hosting company to cover your expenses.

fweespeech··on SoundCloud faces do-or-die vote by investors
They did, it was a picture of the CEO at Burning Man iirc.
fweespeech··on Outraged about the Google diversity memo?
> It was, then the social justice movement decided that companies should be political and that they should take an active role in promoting their political positions. Some on the other side did as well (what sort of cakes they had to make). This is the obvious and predictable blowback that has come from companies becoming political.

It isn't just the SJWs. Conservatives have called for being fired for offending them ever since talk radio was a thing. We got bought by a company HQ'd in the bible belt and the opposite chilling effect was pretty obvious as people who spoke their mind about a few issues that were politically sensitive got fired.

We are just more polarized now and people are less tolerant of any kind of difference.

fweespeech··on Outraged about the Google diversity memo?
Yup. Its not perfect tho, I'm sure I have enough cracks in my setup that people can find out if they really try but its enough people should understand its not related to my job and leave it alone I'd hope.
fweespeech··on Outraged about the Google diversity memo?
The only time I was ever asked about politics by a potential employer I noped out of that situation.

Workplace = Professional, Personal Shit Stays Home.

Rest of Life = Do whatever the fuck you want as long as its legal and you don't mention your day job.

I'm not sure why this separation isn't standard practice for everyone.

fweespeech··on Outraged about the Google diversity memo?
> I'm reminded of Richard Morgan's Black Man aka 13. He argues that men basically don't play well in groups ;)

Damore would be a perfect example of that. There is a time and a place for your beliefs, but the workplace isn't that. ;)
