fuzzy_biscuit··on GHC now runs in the browser
I think the immediate and obvious case would be educational materials. Other than that, technical achievements need not always be practical to be cool :)
fuzzy_biscuit··on The Journey Before main()
I love cpu.land! Thanks for creating such a fun resource.
fuzzy_biscuit··on The React Foundation
Astro is not tied to React. You can choose your framework.
fuzzy_biscuit··on I built ChatGPT with Minecraft redstone [video]
I think you missed the 'no' in there. They did not use command blocks.
fuzzy_biscuit··on I made a public living room and the internet keeps putting weirder stuff in it
Crapboard is a delightful "why? why not?"
fuzzy_biscuit··on The Other Linux Logo
It looks like a Hollow Knight character.
fuzzy_biscuit··on Scream cipher
Now I need a TTS to read a scream.
fuzzy_biscuit··on OrioleDB Patent: now freely available to the Postgres community
I strongly dislike the idea of patenting data structures.
fuzzy_biscuit··on All vibe coding tools are selling a get rich quick scheme
To me, vibe coding is all about "make something that kinda works, quickly, to test and play and create." It shouldn't replace the specifics of a design, a functional specification, or the thought process that creates a final product.

Perhaps that's obvious to others, but it felt worth saying from my perspective. If vibe coding tools are touting themselves as a key to easy wealth, shame on the product and marketing teams creating the messaging.

fuzzy_biscuit··on Fossjobs: A job board for Free and Open Source jobs
That got into 2024 postings fairly quickly. I don't get the sense that the data is very fresh or expansive.
fuzzy_biscuit··on Google has eliminated 35% of managers overseeing small teams in past year
Would that mean you have to undersee one or more people? cue rimshot
fuzzy_biscuit··on I spent over $31k on Whiteout Survival
I played this game briefly and jumped before I got hooked. It's a game of progressively longer timers, resource crunches and anything to make you feel stuck so you will spend. What's more, it's not fun, imho.

It still shocks me how we all look for time sinks when we have so much we could be doing. I'm no better.

fuzzy_biscuit··on I forced every engineer to take sales calls and they rewrote our platform
And thus, the milkshake was born. And it was good.
fuzzy_biscuit··on Lessons learned from buying an open source repo
The SEO bullet is inaccurate. You will temporarily lose position as the new URL is consumed and the new URL is re-associated with the old. It takes time.
fuzzy_biscuit··on PHP compile time generics: yay or nay?
I don't take issue with the naming but with the names that feel a bit beyond my ken. "Erased" makes sense when explained but not before. "Reified" is a word I simply do not use so it feels like academia run amok.

Regardless, I recognize myself as the point of failure, but those names do strike me as academia speak, though better than some/many. <shrug>

fuzzy_biscuit··on What's wrong with the JSON gem API?
Maybe it could just be an alias. People do also refer to them as key-value pairs, so that feels reasonable.
fuzzy_biscuit··on US Court nullifies FTC requirement for click-to-cancel
I don't see the neoliberal deregulation you're talking about, so I'll bite.

Regulatory capture I have seen too often e.g. net neutrality getting killed by a Verizon cronie masquerading as a public servant in the FCC. However, from my perspective, it's been mostly conservative powers undoing consumer protections. Unless you mean liberalism in the more European sense, in which case I agree.

fuzzy_biscuit··on Astro is a return to the fundamentals of the web
Astro didn't introduce island architecture.
fuzzy_biscuit··on New sphere-packing record stems from an unexpected source
My cousin has his own metrology business, and it took me a long time before I understood how he was doing so well financially. Kinda get it now.
fuzzy_biscuit··on Swearing as a Response to Pain: Assessing Effects of Novel Swear Words
I swear in Italian and Russian. Great minds think alike!
fuzzy_biscuit··on Is Lovable getting monetization wrong?
Most spreadsheet software does that because the zips are parsed as integers, not strings . Prefix numerical fields that may contain leading zeros with a non-numerical character/word and save yourself the pain of late discovery! You can just find and replace after it goes in successfully.

Spoken as someone that experienced the same pain years ago in local SEO data that made it way too far before discovery...

fuzzy_biscuit··on Occurences of swearing in the Linux kernel source code over time
I try to be silly rather than explicitly vulgar for my own sanity. Having a comment about a hack that "stinks worse than expired chicken nuggets" or seems to have been "composed by a series of dartboard throws at random character sheets" is way more fun to me.

That said, I don't take issue with cursing in code that remains private to the development staff. As others have said more eloquently than I can, the issue is when it is exposed to customers who might take issue and churn. Not a good look, so for better or worse, there are professions where professionalism cozies up to sterile language.

fuzzy_biscuit··on Databricks acquires Neon
But.. but.... we MUST track you! That's the whole purpose of our site /s
fuzzy_biscuit··on Heat stress mitigation by trees and shelters at bus stops
And they're natural filters. It's a win/win/win.
fuzzy_biscuit··on Someone at YouTube needs glasses
Based on the projected rate of change, it sounds like the homepage will, after falling to 0 videos, eventually start removing videos from the site, so I consider it a win. There are only so many reaction channels that should be allowed to exist.
fuzzy_biscuit··on Future of OSU Open Source Lab in Jeopardy
Not if we're talking about an experienced engineer that is the only full-time staff for a year. That's the entire budget, so it feels pretty spot on. Maybe I'm out of touch or misunderstanding your point, though.
fuzzy_biscuit··on Cozy video games can quell stress and anxiety
I'd say the increase in cozy games is more easily attributable to Stardew Valley in 2016. So many of the clones that came out directly resemble SV in progression, style and content.

Also, the site is beautiful. Excellent work.

fuzzy_biscuit··on OpenAI looked at buying Cursor creator before turning to Windsurf
Vaporware until it isn't.
fuzzy_biscuit··on The dark side of the Moomins
When I get manipulative ads right off the bat after rejecting cookies, I bounce. A shame as I was curious about the actual content.
fuzzy_biscuit··on Why Your 'Harmonious' Team Is Failing
Companies that show little loyalty should expect little loyalty. It seems to be a general business culture truth right now that loyalty is something that will be exploited rather than lauded. That's just my experience as someone who has been in 3 consecutive layoffs over the last few years and became a bit jaded/bitter before my current gig.
