fuzzy2··on Bad software destroyed my doctor's memory
I’m torn on this article. I understand where the doctor is coming from. However, I also disagree entirely with the “should’ve been super skeuomorphic” conclusion. From my experience, that just does not work. It could’ve been a temporary thing to facilitate the transition at best.

In fact, I do not see a single argument that supports the “bad software” claim. Instead, I see something else: part of the information was not in the files that were digitized, but instead in the doctors head. This information is no longer applicable.

When you decide to go digital, the workflow changes, period. There’s no easy solution, it may take quite some time to let go of the old ways and embrace the new system.

fuzzy2··on Things you forgot (or never knew) because of React
We had that discussion here in the past, I’ll just repeat my point of view: When someone says “SSR” today, especially with a Javascript context, they are specifically referring to Javascript SPAs (pre-)rendered server-side.

So, considering this, is it still nonsense? (I honestly don’t know.)

fuzzy2··on How to run a miserable code review
Ah, but it wouldn’t be something as inelegant as a force push. No no. You do merge. It’s just that the outcome is slightly… biased.
fuzzy2··on How to run a miserable code review
What, those are rookie numbers! I opened a pull request 13 business days ago. I even rebased it multiple times when conflicting code was otherwise merged. There’s been no feedback whatsoever. Everyone even remotely involved is now on vacation.

(It’s not like I care either, the project sucks anyway.)

fuzzy2··on Don't be clever
It’s a little ambiguous with Entity Framework. There is no rule that says you cannot change the resulting code. If you want to continue with Code First, that is a totally valid approach, there’s even a subsection on that.
fuzzy2··on Don't be clever
This is sometimes also called scaffolding, which I think is a better term. Code generation often means (compile-time or otherwise) generation of code from something else (like .proto definitions). Code that is not supposed to be modified by the developer and will be overwritten automatically.
fuzzy2··on Google’s Plan to DRM the Web Goes Against Everything Google Once Stood For
I'm thinking about more recent times. Internet Explorer has been dead for almost a decade now. Chrome did not kill it.

Chrome was however preinstalled on many PCs/laptops as part of the crapware package.

Also, yes, it came bundled with basically everything.

fuzzy2··on Google’s Plan to DRM the Web Goes Against Everything Google Once Stood For
That’s the “nerd history”, which I mostly agree with. Normal users however don’t care much about performance and whatnot. Their PC came with Chrome, so they use it. If you give them some other browser, they probably won’t be able to tell the difference.

Chrome didn’t “win” because it was good. It won because of Google’s hyper-aggressive marketing on all channels. They basically did was Microsoft was fined for by the EU back in the day.

fuzzy2··on Microbial Odor Profile of Polyester and Cotton Clothes After a Fitness Session
Others already provided great tips, I have one more: immediately remove them from the washing machine once it finishes and hang them to dry.
fuzzy2··on DHCP is not blocked by ufw/iptables
No, that won't work if the resolver is listening on 127.0.0.1, which will most likely be the case.

Docker also has special handling for systemd-resolved: if resolv.conf points at 127.0.0.53, it will use the managed resolv.conf located in /run.

fuzzy2··on What every IT person needs to know about OpenBSD (2021)
Could you perhaps run it with a read-only root filesystem (only mounting r/w for changes/upgrades)?
fuzzy2··on Microsoft faces antitrust scrutiny from the EU over Teams, Office 365
You can disable that: Outlook Options → Calendar → Calendar options → Add online meeting to all meetings
fuzzy2··on Zoom fatigue unpacked
It's much more important to just ban Bluetooth. And also wired Jabra headsets that inexplicably still sound like Bluetooth. No more tin can sound, no more dropped words when someone starts talking. Yes, even an internal mic is better in this regard, though it will have problems with echo cancellation.
fuzzy2··on Zoom fatigue unpacked
From my experience, a "culture of meetings" was ever present when working at the office. It did not go away when everything went remote by necessity.

And now maybe the "original remote workers" are affected, too.

fuzzy2··on Company builds 500cc ‘one-stroke’ engine
That conversion is the wrong way around. 120 HP is roughly 88 kW. The point still stands, of course. If it indeed can be shrunk further while remaining efficient.
fuzzy2··on Easy SVG sparklines
You don’t. My point is: After drawing, the canvas is “inert”. Rendering to the canvas once is probably more or less as expensive as rendering the SVG once. However, the SVG will probably be rendered a lot more than once. The page developer cannot control it either, the browser decides what’s best.
fuzzy2··on Easy SVG sparklines
Ah, but Canvas does not rely on JS. You would update it using JS, yes. When you don’t update it, it’s just another image. Browsers are quite good at images.

In the end, I think it’s down to the complexity of the graph and the dimensions (in pixels, because images need memory, too).

fuzzy2··on Linux Lite: Easy to Use Free Linux Operating System
Would it? Because the answer is probably “most of them”. There’s hundreds of distros. I very much doubt they care about Secure Boot, or, even if they do, have the resources to support it. Some are even outright opposed to Secure Boot for a variety of reasons.

Can you enable it anyway on any distro? Yes, but it may require non-trivial steps to do so.

fuzzy2··on Container Training
Some applications cannot be deployed as a monolith. Maybe they mix native and managed dependencies. Maybe they rely on external software (like, say, ffmpeg) being present. Maybe this external software depends on specific system library versions.

Yes, you can make all of this work without containers. They make all this very easy and reliable though.

So your container has the right Java Runtime Environment and your app inside. I don't even need to know it's Java!

fuzzy2··on Inner Source Commons
Haha, Inner Source. I see this at a particular client of ours. They use it as a way for teams to dodge change/bugfix requests. They say “oh yeah just create a pull request” and then simply not review it if you actually dare. The non-hostile take is of course if you’re too busy to consider the change request you are also too busy to review the pull request. Not sure if working on PRs is incentivized at all.
fuzzy2··on Barred from Grocery Stores by Facial Recognition
Ah yes, let's put even more people in prison. Prisons that are already filled to the brim. I'm sure that's going to help.
fuzzy2··on The 'fuck you' pattern (2021)
> If you refuse to sign in, they refuse to show you content.

Ah, but this is not what is happening. They do show content! It's just that basically any interaction whatsoever with this content immediately triggers the login prompt.

fuzzy2··on My 24 year old HP Jornada can do things an iPhone still can't do
That sort-of existed though. Windows Phone could do it (Continuum), and so could select Motorola Android phones (via Lapdock).

However, we'll just have to accept that most people don't want this. It's a niche use case.

fuzzy2··on HP printers should have EPEAT ecolabels revoked, trade group demands
That’s the “correct” direct action of course. However, other printer brands are ever hard at work to copy HP’s advances. So when buying a printer, make sure to research in depth.
fuzzy2··on Ask HN: Is anyone hosting their own Jitsi server?
Yes. Setup is incredibly easy. It breaks without fail after a few upgrades, too.

If you want to do it anyway: create a fully automated setup to quickly spin up a new instance.

fuzzy2··on What happened with ASUS routers this morning?
Proper mesh APs have a dedicated radio for AP-to-AP traffic. Unless traffic takes multiple mesh hops, bandwidth will not be affected.
fuzzy2··on Rekt.network
> good journalism

lol

I do agree though, on a more general level: it does take money to produce those articles, authors gotta get paid.

However, IMHO, not at any cost.

fuzzy2··on Rekt.network
You can easily spam the browser history using a redirect slide, effectively preventing users from leaving the page. No need for any JS, works even with active ad blockers. It’s relatively common on malicious sites.
fuzzy2··on Dell goes back on WFH pledge, forces employees to come back to the office
An employment contract will absolutely exist for employees. Just because at-will means it can be terminated at any time doesn’t mean there is no contract.
fuzzy2··on Is Gmail killing independent email?
No, it's actually truly sent using GMail. Otherwise, it could not benefit from GMail's reputation.
