fuzzer371··on As deep-sea mining race ramps up, mission will assess whether ecosystems recover
The world may be ending, but for a short while we generated so much value for shareholders!
fuzzer371··on For centuries massive meals amazed visitors to Korea (2019)
As someone who works in food service, that sounds like a nightmare, not just to prepare but to bring all of that to the table.
fuzzer371··on GPT-OSS-120B runs on just 8GB VRAM & 64GB+ system RAM
Because it's never going to be good. People seem to have drank the kool aid that LLM's are the same as general AI and that its going to solve every single problem in the world. It's the same thing with the quantum computing and fusion reactor people.
fuzzer371··on Student discovers fungus predicted by Albert Hoffman
No, it's because the "Undesirables" simply have a skin tone that isn't white.
fuzzer371··on Researchers develop ‘transparent paper’ as alternative to plastics
Same thing happened in Flint Michigan, the lead pipes weren't the issue; They stopped treating the water a certain way and the slight acidity in the water caused (iirc) some sort of calcium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate layer to be washed away until the acidic water started leaching lead into the water.
fuzzer371··on The FTC puts off enforcing its 'click-to-cancel' rule
[flagged]
fuzzer371··on Universe expected to decay in 10⁷⁸ years, much sooner than previously thought
So... Who cares. No one is going to be around even 10^3 years from now. It doesn't help anyone to know, and there's nothing we can do about it.
fuzzer371··on Don't watermark your legal PDFs with purple dragons in suits
Oh no! How dare someone have some fun
fuzzer371··on Don't watermark your legal PDFs with purple dragons in suits
See, the issue is a lot of people have stupid names.
fuzzer371··on UML diagram for the DDD example in Evans' book
Hmm... I hadn't noticed that. Great, even Y Combinator is going the way of the hammer looking for a nail.
fuzzer371··on Librarians are dangerous
> They no longer even have paper sets of encyclopedias

Honest question from someone who has never actually had to use a paper encyclopedia. Do they still print paper encyclopedias?

fuzzer371··on The Good Karma Kit
Wow, this just seems like a terrible idea all around. Just run the individual service you wish to run. Especially mixing in for profit companies, tor nodes, and not for profit services like Folding@Home seems very dangerous.
fuzzer371··on UML diagram for the DDD example in Evans' book
How about we ditch the AI slop
fuzzer371··on Show HN: Omiword – A daily, sector-based word puzzle
I wish there could be some sort of "reveal hint" button for each sector or something, similar to how a crossword puzzle has clues (With some sort of 'points' penalty or something for using a hint). I couldn't figure out any of the words on my first attempt. But it seems like a neat game overall.
fuzzer371··on Thank HN: The puzzle game I posted here 6 weeks ago got licensed by The Atlantic
Works fine with uBlock Origin enabled and only blocked 9 domains
fuzzer371··on NIH hit with freezes on meetings, travel, communications, and hiring
> previous administration's decision to force/coerce people to take the vaccine against their will

I'm glad they did. Because people are idiots and would listen to their social media influencer's tell them that vaccines cause autism then chug down some horse de-wormer.

fuzzer371··on Mastercard DNS error went unnoticed for years
Well nobody has the phone number 912 for instance. We specifically make sensitive numbers distinct from "regular" numbers. 911, 411, 311, 999, etc.
fuzzer371··on Mastercard DNS error went unnoticed for years
Obviously this was a huge mistake on Mastercards part, but does anyone else think it's a mistake to even /have/ domains that are literally one letter away from the original TLD's? For instance .com and .co, .net and .ne. It just seems to be asking for trouble. If those didn't exist, they couldn't be registered and the erroneous DNS request would just go nowhere.
fuzzer371··on What is an SBAT and why does everyone suddenly care
So it's a linked list
fuzzer371··on Releasing everyone's SSN and the hacks used to acquire them
Or I could just do nothing, it's worked so far. When someone inevitably steals my ID, just use the Shaggy Defense, "It wasn't me"
fuzzer371··on Ask HN: Do we need to pay billions in fees to Stripe, Block, PayPal and Visa/MC?
This has been done with Zelle and people are crying because they're dumb enough to fall victim to obvious scams.
fuzzer371··on Releasing everyone's SSN and the hacks used to acquire them
So what are we supposed to do about it? Everyone has known for years that SSN's aren't secure or supposed to be used in the manner that they are. Many have been screaming from the rooftops about it. I can't do anything about it, you can't do anything about it. So may as well laugh about it.
fuzzer371··on A simple proof that pi is irrational [pdf] (1946)
Yup. It was called a sheet of paper back then.
fuzzer371··on 1970 Clean Air Act was intended to cover carbon dioxide
Honestly, who cares at this point? Obviously the intent of the clean air act was to reduce air pollution which obviously includes regulating greenhouse gas emissions. I'm tired of playing the "Well technically..." game while the planet is actively dying.
fuzzer371··on Atlanta Police Monitoring of 'Cop City' Opponents' Political Activity
I think we can compare the leaks of Ed Snowden with the Pentagon Papers leaks of Mike Gravel.

Post 9/11 (And even before) the US government began a widespread campaign against US citizens themselves under the guise of the "War on terror". People became so brainwashed that what we were doing was unequivocally "right" and what the other guys were doing was wrong. And it's continued to the point where the general public now thinks that we're the good guy's no matter what, without questioning authority. At the time the Pentagon Papers were leaked, it was the first time in a long time (In my opinion) that the general populous woke up and saw that we were doing some pretty horrendous things. The 3 letter agencies took this to heart, and learned from it. People haven't been taught to think critically in a long time, and that's on purpose.

fuzzer371··on The real "Wolf of Wall Street" sales script
I mean, he's not wrong. I'd have loved to have worked there for a year and have made tons of money.
fuzzer371··on Ask HN: Questions for two 40 year IBM Mainframe repair and programmers
What was it like "volunteering to become a programmer" back in those days? Did you know what you were getting into, or did it just sound better than working in the mail room? Was "Programmer" a well respected job at the time? Were you seen as a sort of magician working on the mainframe? Or the equivalent of a "grease monkey" changing oil in a car?
fuzzer371··on Guinea worm disease is close to being eradicated (2022)
> Also, if you segment by demographics

You're not allowed to segment this specific data like that, it's racist.

fuzzer371··on Ask HN: What are you passionate about at the moment?
I mean, so what if there is?
