funstuff007··on Roku filed an 8-K saying that of its $1.9B of cash, $487M is stuck at SVB
Forget about this loss, how much income was Roku giving up by holding $500MM (at least) in checking or savings accounts?
funstuff007··on Roku filed an 8-K saying that of its $1.9B of cash, $487M is stuck at SVB
I don't know about that. I think it's more that they never hedged their interest rate risk (or they invested in assets that were too long duration).
funstuff007··on Roku filed an 8-K saying that of its $1.9B of cash, $487M is stuck at SVB
That's a bold statement and not in line with FDIC actions for previous bank failures.
funstuff007··on Pentax 645 [pdf]
I agree. Once you have an SLR with a real pentaprism (not 5 mirrors), it's hard to go leave.
funstuff007··on The Grind a Day: thousands of Apple II floppy disks archived
Yes, these flux files are yuge (given the amount of actual data they contain). It seems to me they should compress well, but I can't see to remember if tried to do so the last time I fiddled with flux files--during the pandemmy when I thought the world was ending and it was important that my 8th grade book reports be preserved.
funstuff007··on It’s Not TV: The Spectacular Rise, Revolution, and Future of HBO
> the population doesn't care if porn is mixed in with everything else

Good luck bringing that up at the water cooler at work.

funstuff007··on Twitter refused to pay AWS bill, so Amazon refused to pay for ads
That's a very naive view. At the customer size of Twitter, it's more like the old adage. If you owe the bank $1MM it's your problem, but if you own the bank $100MM it's their problem.
funstuff007··on Plan to incinerate soil from Ohio train derailment is ‘horrifying’, says expert
His spreadsheets goal seek on increasing the number of invites to French Laundry.
funstuff007··on Could we make the web more immersive using a simple optical illusion?
Coming from Shopify, this feels like a ZIRP (zero interest rate project). i.e. projects that need not bear any fruit in the next many years. Snark aside, this looks very cool, and I definitely see use cases in gaming (and maybe in web home pages--assuming you could get the client to turn on the web cam for an unknown site).

In the article I see no mention of accelerometers. Can one get nearly the same effect on mobile merely using these and not using the camera?

funstuff007··on Tether Used Falsified Documents and Shell Companies to Get Bank Accounts
Then how does the cash get into Tether?
funstuff007··on Super-rich US households emit +2000x CO2 as avg low-income households
Reminded me of when I found out Al Gore spent $30K a year on utilities. Not posting to call out hypocrisy, but posting to show how the rich are different from you and me.

funstuff007··on Microsoft limits Bing chat to five replies to prevent AI from behaving oddly
$10B down the drain it seems.
funstuff007··on The Silicon Valley Loop
very true, but just because a bubble has different causes doesn't make it not a bubble.
funstuff007··on The Silicon Valley Loop
No mention of ZIRP or a decade plus of quantitative easing. Without those, there would have been no lunacy.
funstuff007··on Start test names with “should” (2020)
I see your point, but our tests ensure that out functions work as expected. usually when test function foo, the test is called test_foo. But if we have a function or class that will ensure that X is a valid sparrow, we have a test called ensure_valid_sparrow.
funstuff007··on Start test names with “should” (2020)
We often use the word "ensure" in test names and / or doc strings.
funstuff007··on Meta delays setting team budgets as Facebook parent plans fresh round of layoffs

For them, the key difference (other than it's great performance) was that it was a standalone executable that did not need to access remote resources or "share" sensitive information with such remote resources.

funstuff007··on Bard and new AI features in Search
> These AI queries are resource intensive.

But perhaps only for now. When youtube first started taking off, Google was bleeding cash on the resources needed to support it. Perhaps the same will be true for LLMs.

funstuff007··on More Airports to Use Greener ‘Glide’ Approach to Landing
> Airlines would save 90,000 gallons of fuel on average and reduce emissions by 27,000 tons annually, which is equivalent to the amount of fuel used by 62 Boeing 737 flights between New York and Cleveland — or the annual carbon emissions of more than 1,600 average Americans combined.

Close to negligible amount of carbon savings, but maybe the noise justification is more meaningful.

funstuff007··on Study links adoption of EV with less air pollution and improved health
I'm not sure I buy this. Isn't most of the pollution generated by a small % of vehicles. e.g. diesel trucks and maga pickups tuned to burn oil. In short, all the sedans on the road can be electric, but the pollution levels are largely unchnaged.

asthma rates for residents of this building would not be affected until all trucks and buses went electric.

funstuff007··on Effective altruism has a sexual harassment problem, women say
I find it very hard to give to charity when any meaningful contribution I make can be immediately dwarfed by a single contribution from a whale. Maybe when / if there are less billionaires, I'll feel differently.
funstuff007··on The Computer That Will Change Everything – Chicago Magazine

Maybe so, but MSFT is not a mark-to-market / opportunistic trader.

funstuff007··on Google calls in help from Larry Page and Sergey Brin for A.I. fight
I would posit that it's more Microsoft freaking out over ChatGPT than Google. MSFT will never get that $10 billion back.
