funnyfoobar··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2024)
Hi Sarah,

I am interested in the lead engineer role. Would you be able to give me any salary range for this position?

thanks

funnyfoobar··on Get The TLDR Of Any YouTube Video
I wanted to make something like this, but I think youtube is going to send them a notice sooner or later, correct me if I am wrong, there is no official way to download a video from youtube https://stackoverflow.com/a/8081778

The site is super fast, wrt generating transcript and even the summary is super fast. I am very impressed with this.

If I want to generate a summary on bunch of text? do i have to use embeddings? anyone has done something similar?

funnyfoobar··on Ask HN: How do I detect if the text is generated by ChatGPT using API?
I can agree with you regarding books and whitepapers.

But AI is getting close to Humans wrt to generating blogs and emails. So wanted a way to understand if i can detect this.

funnyfoobar··on Ask HN: Is there still a reason to use Okta for SSO? Okta vs. Google SSO
Nothing related to Okta Vs Google SSO.

But I think I can add my 2 cents on why people who are already using something like Okta, will take into consideration before switching.

- Pricing, is it going to be significantly cheaper for the organisation in the long run?

If not it's not worth disrupting 100s of applications for 1000s of people, and not to mention the overhead of tech ops setting this up for everyone for a few thousand dollars per year.

But if the cost saving is in millions or 100s of thousands of dollars? why not .. i think then they can afford to disrupt the existing flow

- Bandwidth to perform this migration, do we have enough room to do this. Chances are people are already fighting with the existing burning issues.

- Customer support

funnyfoobar··on Semaphore: A Full-Body Keyboard
Even instructions on which python files to run would also work for me :)
funnyfoobar··on What you give up by moving into engineering management
I can resonate with this a lot as I am a newly minted Staff Engineer.

You really need to block the times to focus, so you hopefully still get to solve some interesting things.

Most of my time is spent on setting the direction, cross team collaboration, managing different stakeholders in the higher, backlog refinements and pre-refinements. I tend to pick up small 1 point story tickets which are not on the critical path to stay in touch with ground reality.

You also have to be an adult in the room, even though you are not wrt age. Got to deal with kindness and patience.

Demo is very cool, how do I run these games on Unix? Looks like it's an exe file. Is there a way to build this myself.
funnyfoobar··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2023)
Hi Erin,

Are you open to hiring from India for the Ruby on Rails role?

funnyfoobar··on India's Forgotten Mansions
we used to have an antique bed frame of king size, and it used to have a mirror which is imported from Belgium.

My great grandfather who used to be rich got it custom made.

It used to be so majestic, made of rose wood. The my dad got it broken down into two beds. I wish i had pics to show, but at those times photos used to cost something as you have to spend a reel film on it.

funnyfoobar··on Building GitHub with Ruby on Rails
How does the current Architecture of Github looks like, Apart from Rails, I have heard that they use Go as well.
funnyfoobar··on Our philosophy on perks – Mark Zuckerberg (2009)
This seems like a great guiding principle, I wonder how it's actually implemented. If anyone from Facebook can share their thoughts.
funnyfoobar··on Show HN: Tabby – A self-hosted GitHub Copilot
I think that this is a really cool project.

Personally, I am working at a financial institution which is regulated, and the legal team + cyber are still evaluating if there would be any problems that could arise with CoPilot.

The way the Europe is heading towards AI regulation, Italy has already banned chatGPT. It seems likely that there would be a threat to Copilot as well in the Europe.

So these kind of solutions would make a ton of sense wrt organisations adopting this.

However as a developer who has used copilot before, here are my 2 cents:

The copilot makes a lot of sense, wrt auto completion and code generation, because it understands the current context of code.

It would be a friction for the developers if we are expecting them to use the user interface this project comes with.

It would be great for this project to go in the direction of the following:

- Ability for the developers to train the model with our custom projects, so it can give suggestions wrt to our style of coding

- Extensions for popular Editors like VIM, VS Code, IntelliJ etc

Happy to share more further info if needed :)

funnyfoobar··on Bjarne Stroustrup: Think seriously about “safety”... [pdf]
TIL. The second link is pretty interesting, may be one day it could become the default for ruby if the core team agrees with the reasons mentioned there.
funnyfoobar··on Bjarne Stroustrup: Think seriously about “safety”... [pdf]
Ruby uses C underneath, so if there is an implementation issue of how C is used to implement a feature in Ruby, it could still lead to issues.

But most of the ruby language is tested at trunk by the big companies like shopify, github etc to patch any issues.

I largely agree with this though: > even “safe” code (in any language) will have to call traditional C or C++ code or be called by traditional code that does not offer specific safety guarantees.

funnyfoobar··on Bjarne Stroustrup: Think seriously about “safety”... [pdf]
Can you please expand on

> Also using a dynamic language like Ruby for anything secure or safe sounds like a terrible idea

afaik, it depends on how you use Ruby right? I agree that using metaprogramming could lead to issues, but i would like to hear your view points on security?

funnyfoobar··on Scientists have discovered the first virovore – an organism that eats viruses
that makes a lot of sense. but how does good bacteria work, that is present on intenstine? Why immune system does not try to kill it?
funnyfoobar··on Ask HN: Do you hate software engineering but love programming?
Most of the software engineering jobs have the same process you described.

But if you are into putting together new projects, possibly you might enjoy working at small consulting companies who are into building prototypes/MVPs.

But if you join a company at post MVP, you might not get what you enjoy doing.

Optionally, there will be some pure R and D jobs, which may not have the same processes that come with software engineering but you might have to read a lot of theory though.

funnyfoobar··on Scientists have discovered the first virovore – an organism that eats viruses
This seems pretty cool! I wonder if we can extend this experiment for other viruses like HIV, Covid etc to see if this Halteria can consume it. That would be ground breaking.
funnyfoobar··on Understanding the N + 1 queries problem
Somewhat deviating, but relavent. If we use counter cache that is to keep vote_count on comments table, the include(:comments) solution would work fine.

funnyfoobar··on Ask HN: Pros and cons of thinking in public vs. in private?
If you get engagement and constructive criticism, i think "sharing your thoughts" on public forums like Twitter helps. But most of the times people just engage by liking the tweets, i would ideally want comments.
