fundad··on SF may soon ban natural gas in homes and businesses undergoing major renovations
Exactly I was just thinking people can take responsibility for gas delivery themselves like any luxury.

BTW I went all electric because plumbing costs more than wiring.

fundad··on I deleted my entire social media presence before visiting the US – I'm a citizen
I did something similar. I knew anything on my accounts was already in the palantir dataset used by DHS. I wanted to at least remove presence local on my phone, I didn't bring a computer abroad with me.

I went through my history and deleted twitter, x and bluesky (I didn't and still don't read them via their apps). Probably should have deleted any mastadon links that I viewed in case any were not loyal enough.

I deleted stored passwords for all social media. Deleting SMS was tedious, if you donate, they sell you number to every campaign that is considered the "enemy of the people" by the establishment. The best I could do was search for "campaign" and "Trump" and delete the SMS messages out of the Messages app.

Of course my luck was better than I expected. All I did at immigration was point out one of my kids was really tired (he was quite sick on the plane-ride home). The CBP agent said something about "I'll get you out of here soon" and that was true without a single question.

I suppose my toddler makes me look like less of a risk to national security than when I would return from solo overseas travel. I'm not going to get too comfortable though.

fundad··on The death of partying in the USA
I did read this wrong.

> My spouse and I find that we are overwhelmingly the ones calling to organize playdates rather than vice versa.

I read that as his spouse and he were organizing rather than the kids organizing with friends when they're together at school or camp. That's what my kids do unless it's a birthday party or carpool.

fundad··on The death of partying in the USA
I bet military service-members still socialize and get hammered.
fundad··on The death of partying in the USA
It would be one thing if it worked. The OP admits that their kids don't initiate socializing but also claims they aren't poorly socialized. Blaming every parent but themselves when their parenting resulted in kids that don't seem to try hard enough.
fundad··on The death of partying in the USA
And partying is expensive
fundad··on Linda Yaccarino is leaving X
At least she can claim the success of getting the company sold, even if it was to a sibling company under X Corp.
fundad··on X Chief Says She Is Leaving the Social Media Platform
Yes most of their revenue growth is expected to be as the everything app (or a video platform?).

Musk has said over and over he doesn't care about advertising revenue, he mangled a quote from the Princess Bride to say "I don't care" and then he said if advertisers try to blackmail him with money (even stranger phrasing) they could go f*ck themselves.

[https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-misquotes-princess...] [https://www.forbes.com/sites/briansolis/2023/12/05/elon-musk...]

I think gaining the influence to fire regulators investigating his companies was what he wanted.

BTW he sold Twitter to another subsidiary of X Corp, I wonder if he paid back the debt from the LBO of Twitter.

fundad··on xAI to pay telegram $300M to integrate Grok into the chat app
Yes
fundad··on US Trade Court finds Trump tariffs illegal
Sounds like there isn’t support for this agenda, and they’re breaking the law to force it on the country. They could moderate their position to something that would pass congress if they cared about the Republic.
fundad··on xAI to pay telegram $300M to integrate Grok into the chat app
It wasn't about revenue, it was about a massive propaganda and surveillance apparatus.
fundad··on xAI to pay telegram $300M to integrate Grok into the chat app
It looks like Telegram sold the US government a back door to users' messages.
fundad··on Retailers will soon have only about 7 weeks of full inventories left
It’s not hard to imagine since we’ve had almost 2 years of warnings that the GOP would do this. Of course those warnings were dismissed as hysterical by people who apparently wanted this economic crisis.
fundad··on Retailers will soon have only about 7 weeks of full inventories left
Right, they don’t know how much smaller the demand will be during an economic crisis. It’s safer to have empty shelves until they can more accurately forecast what’s left of demand.
fundad··on Retailers will soon have only about 7 weeks of full inventories left
Yeah that's what scares me. They are breaking laws AND lower living standards as if they won't have to run for reelection (or accept electoral loss) ever again.
fundad··on Port of Los Angeles says shipping volume will plummet 35% next week
Running government like a business... Theranos.
fundad··on U.S. Economy Contracts at 0.3% Rate in First Quarter
In hindsight, it looks like a pump-an-dump scam.
fundad··on U.S. Economy Contracts at 0.3% Rate in First Quarter
Agreed. There is no reasonable argument that the people in charge and those that voted for them actually want economic growth. This was not only the expected result, it was the intended result.
fundad··on NSF director to resign amid grant terminations, job cuts, and controversy
this director was appointed by the 45th president in 2017.
fundad··on The Navy's experiment with hands in pockets under review, top admiral says
The benefits and pension must be worth it.
fundad··on Students at Military Base Schools Walk Out to Protest Trump Policies
They probably also suspect “government efficiency” will target benefits like military base schools.
fundad··on Android phones will soon reboot themselves after sitting unused for 3 days
Very good idea, dat is unencrypted until the system is rebooted. Valuable data is dangerous in the custody of a government you don’t trust.
fundad··on Temu pulls its U.S. Google Shopping ads
They can substitute US products with those from plenty of nations plowing money into overcapacity and dumping their exports on the international market.
fundad··on Temu pulls its U.S. Google Shopping ads
I don't expect an insurrectionist to do good for Americans.

I also think government spending on overcapacity so we can export food is a waste of money and bad for the economy and the environment. How many millions of acres of soy bean crops do we actually need?

If the market for exported soy suffers because of who people voted for, let's reduce the subsidies by n%, farmers will plant less won't be able to keep all their land and we can return that land to Native Americans. This is disruption we need (but won't get because murica).

fundad··on Temu pulls its U.S. Google Shopping ads
Instead of the US government spending away on overcapacity so Canadians can have cheap products, that money should go to public housing and healthcare subsidies. I think this is better for the US long term because agriculture is heavily subsidized and competes with housing and other industries for land and labor.
fundad··on Temu pulls its U.S. Google Shopping ads
Yes, that's because they are a consumption tax intended to replace income tax. the talk of US manufacturing is not completely on-the-level.
fundad··on Temu pulls its U.S. Google Shopping ads
The tariffs were definitely part of the campaign, described in detail in Project 2025 and will eventually replace higher brackets of the income tax.

This consumption tax is tax policy, not trade policy. That was evident when there was not even any discussion about excepting manufacturing inputs (neither this time nor the 45th administration).

fundad··on Pentagon to terminate $5.1B in IT contracts with Accenture, Deloitte
Yea. California’s government delivers a lot of services that protect ecosystems, a healthy economy and quality of life. All three of those examples are mutually beneficial.

You can disagree with some services but that’s because the state does so much, for example I think there is too much wasted on the carceral and military side.

fundad··on Trump exempts phones, computers, chips from ‘reciprocal’ tariffs
My take is Biden sounds old. The sitting president sounds brain-damaged and unquestionably is in no condition to be making such impactful decisions. The wavering we see right now is because the different factions making the decisions are struggling against each other.
fundad··on Trump exempts phones, computers, chips from 'reciprocal' tariffs
I’m sure the richest corporations are rushing to retain these firms in an attempt to be on the winning side.
