functional_dev··on Microsoft hasn't had a coherent GUI strategy since Petzold
what surprised me is how different the rendering architecture is for each framework.

Win32 -> message loops & GDI

Winforms -> managed C# via P/Invoke

WPF -> throwse all away and uses DirectX

UWP -> Appcontainer sandboxing

WinUI -> decouples from OS entirely

This visual breakdown helped me to see it clearly - https://vectree.io/c/evolution-of-windows-gui-frameworks-fro...

functional_dev··on Bacteria found in the human intestine capable of improving muscle strength
So.. eat more fiber and your gut bacteria will produce butyrate. And that helps muscles.
functional_dev··on A tail-call interpreter in (nightly) Rust
The article shows WASM being 1.2-3.7x slower, and your experience confirms it.

Do you have any idea which operations regress the most?

functional_dev··on Caveman: Why use many token when few token do trick
Chain of thought happens in the <think> tags, not the visible output.

Caveman only strips filler from what you see... the reasoning depth stays the same.

I found this visualisation pretty interesting - https://vectree.io/c/chain-of-thought-reasoning-how-llms-thi...

functional_dev··on Show HN: I built a tiny LLM to demystify how language models work
Great find! It appears uppercase tokens are completely unknonw to the tokenizer.

But the character still comes through in response :)

functional_dev··on What changes when you turn a Linux box into a router
The wiki diagram helped me too, thanks!

One thing I did not understand before: why SNAT must happen at POSTROUTING?

Because the exit interface is only known after the routing decision... before that kernel does not know which source IP to write

this visual schematic made it click for me - https://vectree.io/c/linux-netfilter-packet-flow-tables-chai...

functional_dev··on Tesla Is Sitting on a Record 50k Unsold EVs
Good point, full self driving probably felt like marketing win back then... but now it is a liability. Rebranding now would just highlight all missed promises
functional_dev··on iNaturalist
Looked at their source code out of curiosity. They use Elasticsearch as a geo backend, tile server that renders PNG images server side for each map tile request.

- low zoom -> server aggregated grid

- high zoom -> switcher to point tiles

browser just displays images, there is no work to do on client side..

I generated a visual schematic how these kind of systems work: https://vectree.io/c/server-side-geo-tile-rendering-elastics...

functional_dev··on F-15E jet shot down over Iran
yes, this part I find to be most interesting.. how many losses before the picture changes for the public?
functional_dev··on SSH certificates: the better SSH experience
maybe it keeps getting rediscovered, becaues a good tooling around it is still missing?
functional_dev··on Artemis II crew take “spectacular” image of Earth
so the atmosphere acts as giant lamp lit from behind by Moon? never thought of it that way
functional_dev··on We replaced RAG with a virtual filesystem for our AI documentation assistant
exactly, embeddings destroy information.. exact keywords, acronyms, etc. They get squashed into floats.

That is why grep still beats it for code.

I generated visual schematic of every stage of the pipeline - https://vectree.io/c/retrieval-augmented-generation-embeddin...

functional_dev··on Marc Andreessen is wrong about introspection
I didn't know how old this actually is. I was surprised to learn Marcus Aurelius wrote his Meditations as a private journal... never meant to be published.

found this if anyone wants to explore: https://vectree.io/c/stoic-self-examination-marcus-aurelius-...

functional_dev··on Solar and batteries can power the world
had the same question and after reading about it, I found there are multiple layers on each other.

Existing plans are built to run 40-60 years.. retiring creates "stranded assets". pension funds fight hard to avoid that. The renewable projects that wait for permits exceed total existing capacity.. the bottleneck is not tech, but locality.

I found this visual schematic helpful - https://vectree.io/c/why-energy-transitions-are-slow-grid-in...

functional_dev··on Run Linux containers on Android, no root required
That would be great
functional_dev··on Mercurial Dyson – a plan for the disassembly of planet Mercury
Isn't the point of mirrors to concentrate heat for mining, not to get more total power?
functional_dev··on The more evidence behind a therapy, the less the public trusts it
30 years and nobody (pharma, govts, etc.) have not found it worth to study this properly. If it worked, would not at least some researched pick this up?
functional_dev··on A Recipe for Steganogravy
yeah, encrypting the bits before embedding seems like a valid first step... even if someone suspects steganography, they still can't read it
functional_dev··on Decisions that eroded trust in Azure – by a former Azure Core engineer
this made me look into how cloud hypervisors actually work on HW level.. they all offload it to custom HW (smart nic, fpga, dpu, etc..). cpu does almost nothing except for tenant work. AWS -> Nitro, Azure -> FPGA, NVIDIA sells DPUs.

Here is interactive visual guide if anyone wants to explore - https://vectree.io/c/cloud-virtualization-hardware-nitro-cat...

functional_dev··on Steam on Linux Use Skyrocketed Above 5% in March
what surprised me is how Proton works under the hood... no emulation at all!

wine translates win API -> Linux. Then DXVK converts DirectX calls into Vulkan in real time, and VKD3D-Proton for DX 12. so it always native Vulkan.. no wonder performance is even better than in windows!

this laid it out it for me visually - https://vectree.io/c/how-proton-runs-windows-games-on-linux-...

functional_dev··on Should AI have the right to say 'No' to its owner?
you are right.. separating this 2 questions is big safety advantage. exactly like in software we separate logic from security (like AWS IAM)
functional_dev··on Significant raise of reports
agreed, attackers can use these AI tools to scan open source code and find bugs very fast... if project maintainers do not have access to such tools, it because an ufair fight
functional_dev··on Google releases Gemma 4 open models
yeah, it appears to support audio and image input.. and runs on mobile devices with 256K context window!
functional_dev··on Artemis II will use laser beams to live-stream 4K moon footage at 260 Mbps
I was wondering about this too! I did not know how they can aim a laser from so far at a moving spaceship.

I generated this visual map about to help me understand it - https://vectree.io/c/aiming-space-lasers-gimbals-and-beam-di...

functional_dev··on Artemis II Launch Day Updates
your point about gas pockets making the shield blow out made me curious

I found this visual schematic of the spalling helpful - https://vectree.io/c/the-physics-of-ablative-spalling-in-ori...

It finally makes sense why the gas needs to leak out... if it gets trapped behind the burnt outer crust, the pressure just blows pieces of the shield off like a tiny bomb

functional_dev··on The Claude Code Source Leak: fake tools, frustration regexes, undercover mode
the list is funny :)

So it counts how many times I was angry?

functional_dev··on IBM Announces Strategic Collaboration with Arm
is it that bad? maybe that is a secret for a long life. I want a job that never disappears :)
functional_dev··on Sweden goes back to basics, swapping screens for books in the classroom
exactly, makes me think... if person who makes the bread does not feed his own family, something is wrong
functional_dev··on Ollama is now powered by MLX on Apple Silicon in preview
I did not know, that NVFP4 was handled at the silicon level... until I dug deeper here - https://vectree.io/c/llm-quantization-from-weights-to-bits-g...
functional_dev··on Spring Boot Done Right: Lessons from a 400-Module Codebase
Agreed, Spring Framework is quite simple... just look here - https://vectree.io/c/spring-framework
