fshbbdssbbgdd··on Learning to Reason with LLMs
So if there’s already easily available information about strychnine, that makes it a good example to use for the demo, because you can safely share the demo and you aren’t making the problem worse.

On the other hand, suppose there are other dangerous things, where the information exists in some form online, but not packaged together in an easy to find and use way, and your model is happy to provide that. You may want to block your model from doing that (and brag about it, to make sure everyone knows you’re a good citizen who doesn’t need to be regulated by the government), but you probably wouldn’t actually include that example in your demo.

I often click on those links and get an error that they are unavailable. I’m not sure if it’s openAI trying to prevent people from sharing evidence of the model behaving badly, or an innocuous explanation like the links are temporary.
fshbbdssbbgdd··on Can solar costs keep shrinking?
I don’t know this specific area, but some deserts you have to drill impractically deep to get to any ground water.
fshbbdssbbgdd··on Anthropic publishes the 'system prompts' that make Claude tick
I don’t think the people who engineered the Golden Gate Bridge, Apollo 7, or the transistor would have succeeded if they didn’t have hope.
fshbbdssbbgdd··on AI stole my job and my work, and the boss didn't know – or care
Let’s not rewrite history here. Search results were full of aimless, meandering SEO-optimized articles long before it became possible to generate those with LLMs.
fshbbdssbbgdd··on Good programmers worry about data structures and their relationships
Back when I used to work in plain js I saw very complicated structures, but there is no type annotation. It’s worse. The horrible part is where the type changes in different cases, so you have to trace everything to know if what you are changing is safe.
fshbbdssbbgdd··on Ditch banks – Go with money market funds and treasuries
Doesn’t SIPC protect from the fund manager stealing your money?

Although, I would suggest to buy the treasuries directly and not pay a fee to any fund.

fshbbdssbbgdd··on Ditch banks – Go with money market funds and treasuries
As far as I know, the US Treasury and FDIC are both under a legal obligation but either could be unable to fulfill its obligation if it lacks the funds. Under this scenario where the Treasury defaults, tons of banks will will be broken (since they keep money in the Treasury too), how will FDIC save them when its money is also tied up in treasuries?
fshbbdssbbgdd··on Ditch banks – Go with money market funds and treasuries
What’s the FDIC going to do for you when the treasuries it uses to hold its own funds are in default?
fshbbdssbbgdd··on Ditch banks – Go with money market funds and treasuries
The FDIC keeps its own money in treasuries.

fshbbdssbbgdd··on Google loses antitrust suit over search deals on phones
The idea that a 0.66% decline in revenue would be insignificant made me snort. Increasing revenue that much would make many careers - it would justify the existence of a substantial origination. That’s billions of dollars annually.
fshbbdssbbgdd··on Google loses antitrust suit over search deals on phones
If the rate Google pays is in some way set per usage/rev-share, then Google is indeed paying to make the setting difficult to change.
fshbbdssbbgdd··on Largest Geothermal Development in America Taking Shape in Utah
> Solar ? Short lifespan, land occupation, requires mining

Almost everyone I know of who has had solar panels for a long time reports they last a lot longer than promised. And even if some part breaks, it can be replaced. You don’t need to repeat the whole time and expense of acquiring the land, building the facility, grid interconnect and permitting. This means humanity gets a dividend in energy over the very long term, which balances favorably against the upfront cost.

The issue of intermittency is more valid. It can be mitigated with battery storage, which has its own cost and downsides, but the chemistries are advancing rapidly, so I think the future is bright for energy abundance.

fshbbdssbbgdd··on United States discloses nuclear warhead numbers; restores nuclear transparency
Are you saying that just because the great circle from US to NK goes over Russia? Can we not fire on a less optimal trajectory? Or from a submarine?
fshbbdssbbgdd··on Large models of what? Mistaking engineering achievements for linguistic agency
> How could a system which produces a single next word based upon a likelihood and and a parameter called a "temperature" have a conceptual model underpinning it? Even theoretically?

Could a creature that simply evolved to survive and reproduce possibly have a conceptual model underpinning it? Model training and evolution are very different processes, but they are both ways of optimizing a physical system. It may be the case that evolution can give rise to intelligence and model training can’t, but we need some argument to prove that.

fshbbdssbbgdd··on Continuously shorting IT stocks overnight and buying back at market open
Indeed, everyone believes congresspeople have some special exception to insider trading rules. In fact, they are subject to the same insider trading rules as everyone else, and the conduct they engage in simply doesn’t meet the (unintuitive) legal definition of insider trading.

Some efforts to impose a different, more expansive definition on congresspeople have failed, which might be the source of that misconception.

fshbbdssbbgdd··on Stop Microsoft users sending 'reactions' to email by adding a postfix header
For what it’s worth, I’m not a big user of outlook, but I use reactions a lot in chat.

I like receiving reactions specifically because they save me time. When I get a typed message, I often take time to think through whether the sender is expecting some sort of acknowledgement (confirming that I got their message letting me know that I’m welcome to thank them again any time!) or whether it’s polite to terminate the exchange by not responding. Overall, I spend far more time than I’d like second-guessing my words. When I just get a reaction, it serves as a form of acknowledgement that doesn’t demand further response and frees me from an obligation.

Hacker News does have some reactions - upvote, downvote, flag.
fshbbdssbbgdd··on AT&T says criminals stole phone records of 'nearly all' customers in data breach
If we go with the logic of the grandparent comment, where were can measure the harm by adding up a minute of time wasted across millions of people to get a big amortized number, it seems commensurate that each of those people can be compensated for their minute of wasted time with a few dollars.
fshbbdssbbgdd··on Metal thieves in America's cities
You never have to prosecute the crimes you deter. And if you don’t deter at all the crimes will just keep increasing. A city where only gated communities have electricity is not good for the poor.
fshbbdssbbgdd··on Metal thieves in America's cities
The costs of repairing the damage vastly exceed the earnings obtained by the criminal. The article gives the example $85k in damage incurred to repair damage that yielded $394 in scrap. This destruction of wealth harms overall welfare, and deprives the government of resources, which hurts poor people especially. In other words, even if you only care about people who live in poverty, you should support a crackdown that will deter crimes like this.
fshbbdssbbgdd··on A Louisiana gas plant sea wall shows challenges of flooding, energy demand
I agree that it’s not the customer’s fault for buying and using what is offered to them. Furthermore, it’s not the producer’s fault for supplying it - after all, they are merely accepting money that is offered, acceding to demand. Spinoza figured it all out a long time ago.
fshbbdssbbgdd··on VPN ban is strangling communication in Myanmar
People who commit crimes are often wearing medical masks these days.

Before covid, there was the stereotype of criminals wearing ski masks. It would make sense if you were doing a serious crime and expected to be caught on camera. It did require you to commit to looking like a criminal. Now, you can just wear a medical mask, walk down the street, you can’t be identified, you aren’t blatantly criminal-looking, but you can opportunistically do a smash and grab or whatever without worrying about your face being seen.

fshbbdssbbgdd··on Tour de France: How professional cycling teams eat and cook on the road
Tour de France teams don’t care about the cost savings from cheaper sugar, they do care about the time and weight effects of drinking more water to absorb the glucose.
fshbbdssbbgdd··on Tour de France: How professional cycling teams eat and cook on the road
There are multiple kinds of carbohydrate and the differences can matter.

Gatorade’s ingredients list shows sucrose (glucose+fructose) and dextrose (glucose).

Maltodextrin is isotonic in a 6x stronger solution than fructose and glucose. This means you need to drink meaningfully less water during a race to digest maltodextrin. So do we want all maltodextrin? Nope! Fructose can be absorbed by a separate pathway, which is less efficient, but increases your total intake of carbohydrates into the bloodstream.

So you’re probably not going to see Tour de France teams giving their riders Gatorade. You want more maltodextrin and less glucose.
