fsckin··on Tell HN: Wear a Helmet
I experienced a highside [1] dirt bike crash a few years ago. I hit the ground with incredible force, which fractured my arm.

The following day, one side of my body was covered in contusions, and I had a severe phone-shaped hematoma on my thigh.

I have every reason to believe that wearing a helmet prevented a serious brain injury. Also, Otterbox makes a pretty good product.

fsckin··on Ways to Minimize Employee Retention
This one also hit home for me. Founder bitched me out with 25 or 30 people within earshot (open office plan) for no good reason. I took care of their complaint 30 seconds later. After three years of loyal service, that's the level of respect I get?

I updated my resume and was gone in three weeks.

fsckin··on The State of ZFS on Linux
I've never heard of someone using ZFS with a single disk. You're probably better off with ext4.

The compression and deduplication features of ZFS is terrific on network filers. Compression could possibly improve performance slightly on a single disk system.

With two disks, I'd say you'd probably be better off with running RAID0 (or no RAID at all) and having a great backup plan. Using another SSD to cache writes to another SSD doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

fsckin··on List of Web Business Models
Tesla Master Plan:

  Build sports car
Use that money to build an affordable car
Use that money to build an even more affordable car
While doing above, also provide zero emission electric power generation options
Thanks for the link, good reading.
fsckin··on Sublime Text Development Status
Do you edit very large files? The regex engine and UI update speed feels incredibly slow to me when making complex changes across thousands of lines in a 200MB file, while vim or grep/awk/etc have no such problem.
fsckin··on Honeywell Lyric thermostat
A few years ago, I bought an internet module add on for a Honeywell alarm system and was shocked to find that the control UI communicated in plain text with no authentication to the internet module. The module broadcast its address across the entire network every few seconds.

At any location that has one of these installed on a weak WiFi network (an unfortunately likely combination), it would be feasible to crack the network and brute force disable the alarm from the outside, disabling the alarm before ever setting foot inside.

Let's just say I wont be buying any Honeywell products in the future.

fsckin··on Target removes CEO in wake of cyber attack
Time to write three letters.
fsckin··on AT&T's 'Expansion' of 1 Gbps to 100 Cities is a Big, Fat Bluff
I would happily move to get faster internet speeds, but all of the neighborhoods AT&T are targeting seemed to be expensive when I checked them out.

This jives w/ what the article says:

>>What's actually happening is that AT&T is upgrading a few

>>high-end developments where fiber was already in the ground

>>(these users were previously capped at DSL speeds) and

>>pretending it's a serious expansion of fixed-line broadband.

On the other hand, Google Fiber seems to be planning connectivity all over the place, since they're tasked w/ providing free service to various community hubs selected by the city which are widely spread out.

fsckin··on Japanese railway operator to license maglev tech to US for free
If you ever have the chance to ride the Shanghai maglev from Pudong airport into the city, splurge a little bit for first class. It's incredibly relaxing before or after a long flight and watching the world fly past at 270mph and not feeling crowded or touching other people for 8 minutes.

Oh, and don't trust any taxi driver who speaks English, you're extremely likely to be scammed. Don't ask me how I know.

fsckin··on Show HN: 10% off at Starbucks when you buy with Bitcoin
If someone buys Starbucks gift cards with dirty money, by selling the gift card at a discount, you get laundered money back.

It's could be even more advantageous if you sell the gift cards for bitcoins, which can be sent anywhere in the world and anonymously exchanged for cash in nearly any currency/country through localbitcoins.

fsckin··on -2000 lines of code
Reminds me of this quote:

"One of my most productive days was throwing away 1000 lines of code." - Ken Thompson

fsckin··on How Gmail happened: The inside story on its launch, ten years later
For context, I was working at a minimum wage job when Gmail launched. I won an eBay auction for an invite a few weeks after launch for a whopping $36 -- something I thought there would be a good chance of eventually regretting.

Soon after I signed up, I received 5 or 10 invites, and flipped those on eBay the next day.

Other than the NSA funny business, I haven't regretted it one bit.

fsckin··on This Little-Known iOS Feature Will Change the Way We Connect
>Mesh networking is like this unicorn.

No kidding. It'd be great if this evolved to where half or more of phones in a nearby vicinity could completely shutdown their cellular radio and use the mesh network for connectivity, saving (on average) lots of battery life and providing more reliable service for all.

fsckin··on Experts Find Mt.Gox Only Lost 386 Bitcoins Due To Transaction Malleability
The past tense is "malleableized".
fsckin··on Bringing Peer-to-Peer Streaming to the World.
What do you think of Ace Player?

It's a VLC branch adding BitTorrent support, which is a pretty slick addition. I've not been able to find their source code (wiki is down) but it looks decent.

fsckin··on Colorado Pot Tax Proving More Lucrative Than Expected

fsckin··on Clef – stop using passwords
+1 for LastPass. Saves a bunch of time. They're pretty damn persistent about doing security the right way -- they don't have the key to open your data.
fsckin··on The Day We Do Nothing Of Consequence
Do you know where can I donate for this specific issue?
fsckin··on Proposed bill would require kill switch in California phones, tablets
All phones have a builtin kill switch. You need to compel the phone company to turn it off. But then there are ham radios. This is how things were done in Egypt... Look at how that turned out.
fsckin··on Make every day feel like Saturday
Charlie is a pretty remarkable guy. I fondly remember playing NS1 shortly after it was released and seeing him join pub games on a regular basis -- it was nice to see a game dev who enjoys the results of their work.

I now work in the games biz and although every day doesn't feel like Saturday, it's pretty close.

fsckin··on Google Video Quality Report
Same for me on Time Warner in Austin. I can't wait for Google Fiber to roll into town.
fsckin··on Updating Torrents Via Feed URL
Or Sickbeard.
fsckin··on Show HN: Kimono – Never write a web scraper again
Do you support POSTs for fetching dynamic data? I found where it's pulling from, here's the curl command:

curl "https://www.keepandshare.com/calendar/fns_asynch_api.php?r=0... --data "action=getrange&i=1940971&from=2013-12-26&to=2014-02-06"

fsckin··on Show HN: Kimono – Never write a web scraper again
Constructive Tone: I figured that it might be nifty to scrape cedar pollen count information from a calendar and then shoot myself an email when it was higher than 100 gr/m3.

This would be a pretty difficult thing to grab when scraping normally, but the app errors before loading the content:

fsckin··on Target's data breach bigger than first thought – more than 100M records
This is Bad News, seeing as Target is also tracking every thing you've ever purchased[0] and using it for marketing purposes. I wonder if they also got ahold of not just credit cards and PII, but also purchase history.

I wonder why they're not using this information to contact their "guests" directly? Why should I need to read about this revelation on HN, when they know everything about me.

fsckin··on BMW's Laser Headlights
You can see very clearly where the higher intensity area of the beam cuts off, and he probably doesn't get flashed by oncoming cars.
fsckin··on Hackers steal card data from Neiman Marcus
If you're not actively logging and auditing all SELECT * queries on tables storing credit card numbers... shame on you.
fsckin··on Overstock.com Is Now Accepting Bitcoins
I would think that most merchants who asynchronously fulfill will assume the transaction was successful, then have a callback to validate before shipment and handle failure scenarios.
fsckin··on 129 Cars
That doesn't sound like a negotiation.... if you had started at $9,000 and come up $500 at the end you might have gotten it.
fsckin··on AK47 assault rifle inventor Kalashnikov dies at 94
An estimated 1/5th of all firearms in circulation around the world owe their design to Kalashnikov.

You could tally all firearm deaths since 1947, divide by 5 and get a reasonably good estimate.

To get even closer, exclude 95% of suicides and exclude 95% of homicides in the USA (along with plenty of other countries) since killers in countries not at war or in conflict tend to use handguns 20 times more often.
