fsckboy··on What Emily Bender meant by "stochastic parrots"
it annoys me how eager people are to hurl the word stochastic as pejorative. Statistics are a great tool for gleaning information from stochastic processes; statistics don't contribute randomness. Random sampling is necessary in order not to bias a sample, it's not used to contribute randomness to the sample but to preserve/measure the underlying distribution. (not meant to imply that training is random sampling)

>Human barbarism is not new...

to be fair, without humans there would be nobody to declare "barbarism". At one time, all humans were barbarians, it took a certain level of cultural development before the word "barbarism" was necessary, so at that point it was "new". It remains be be shown whether cultures that call other cultures "barbaric" are actually "better".

"Cochran and Harpending also cite studies claiming that Ashkenazim have the highest IQ of any ethnic group for which there’s reliable data, perhaps as much as a full standard deviation above the general European average, which means, at the far end of the spectrum, that 23 per thousand Ashkenazim have an IQ over 140, as opposed to 4 per thousand Northern Europeans."

>You don't need genetic inheritance to explain Jewish over-performance, cultural inheritance is enough.

but it is known, independently of Jewish population studies, that genetic inheritance is a strong factor in IQ performance, and such data also demands explanation; there is no point in leaving it out of population studies.

It is much more frustrating to perform tasks that are more difficult for you than things that are easy. So if a task requires intellect, you are more likely to engage in that task if you are intelligent, and more likely to progress in that field if other people note and reward your performance. Such a process carried out on a particular gene pool might reinforce tendencies that lead to part of what we call culture.

>Looking at national IQ averages currently Hong Kong seems to score highest with an average of 107.73 while Israel is below average at 98.57, below most European countries as well as below the USA.

Ashkenazi Jews as a population average scores above 107. The IQ mean of 100 has a standard deviation of about 15. Also, Ashkenazi Jews are less than half of Israel.

fsckboy··on U.S. officials believed Israel was plotting to kill Iranian negotiators
64 Fields Medals have been awarded, 15 went to Jews, just over 23%.

Jews are 2.5% of the US but less than 0.2% of Europe (10% of all Jews live in Europe; in 1933, it was 60%)

>It's not a conspiracy or anti-Semitic

it is if you think the reason is something that's not benign, or if you are keeping track of it and spreading it hoping to foment anger.

A hugely disproportionate number of Nobel Prizes have been won by Jews (22% vs 0.2% of total population) and that's with 6 million killed in the holocaust. By Occam's razor, that's a lot of really smart people, and I prefer having smart leaders.

Do you think the President of Mexico and Ukraine are Jewish because Mossad?

Let me guess, you think all the above is because they cheated?

fsckboy··on U.S. officials believed Israel was plotting to kill Iranian negotiators

fsckboy··on AI can't be listed as inventor on patent applications, Japan's top court rules
>my whole life, it was sold to me as an incentive-boosting measure which in turn would lead to said outcomes

at the time patents were debated, a key part of the proposal was to encourage the transfer "trade secret knowledge" to the public good while still protecting the inventor. this is not an "encourage innovation" argument, it's to stop knowledge from dying with a secretive inventor, knowledge such as glass or metallurgical techniques, formulas, etc.

the inventor also benefited from this patent protection because they could expand their business unlimited by maintaining a small inner circle who knew the secret.

fsckboy··on Since Linux 6.9, LUKS suspend stopped wiping disk-encryption keys from memory
I don't see how that solves this problem. there is a string in memory that gets saved on suspend. that string when read by the CPU has the same properties it had before. if the CPU is using rot-13, the string is still rot-13 and the attacker doesn't need to spend the compute needed to crack rot-13, the CPU will simply do that as normal.
fsckboy··on Healthy but sedentary people show early decline in cellular energy production
marginal effects are small, but it's where the integration and feedback add up or even multiply. the claim here is that the mitchondria are paying attention to their own marginal quantities which are quite small; the outsized effects if they are someplace will lie elsewhere. For example, sendentary life will lead to less muscle mass, which means fewer mitochondria overall, but that's not the individual mitochondria "noticing" anything.
fsckboy··on Healthy but sedentary people show early decline in cellular energy production
Our mitochondria process the total of our energy needs every day, while exercise adds, percentagewise, only fractional additional energy need.

do you think mitochondria notice the difference? I don't.

If I cut my caloric intake, I drop weight like nobody's business, and that's all thanks to my mitochondria at their place in the chain. It's the same thing my mitochondria are doing when I overeat and put on weight.

the conceit of leftists is that they are godd and pure... but they never are and it NEVER works out, just makes them insufferaby sanctimonious along the way. I was raised completely leftist btw, by good people, but I saw the craven insides of all their friends.

I didn't say the boomers weren't the way you describe, I said you're just like them, lofty ideals, all too human boundaries and self control.

fsckboy··on The labor share of income in the US is at its lowest post-war level
there is no such thing as "labor share of income". It's a measurement you can calculate, but it means nothing tells nothing.

in caveman times, labor's share of income was 100%. Do you want to live like that?

You say the boomers are a problem simply because they are old and the young hate the old (ageism), and because they have money and you want it, now.

Boomers created everything you like about this world, including youth culture itself, "don't trust anybody over 30".

Their predecessor generations, their parents and grandparents, believed comprehensively in things you despise.

I know this because I hated the boomers when they were young, and you all sound just like them.

no. the banks hold the poor's money, and it needs to do so without risk because the poor need their money. lending money to start companies that are completly unsecured is too risky for banks, they lend money to buy houses which is secured debt.

Original statements that led to this discussion

>>Polish is the second most-used Slavic language, right after Russian and just before Ukrainian

>This is not exactly right regarding Ukrainian. While it is the official language of Ukraine, in reality... let's say that not all Ukrainian people are actually speaking it.

The language debate about whether Ukraine is third behind Russian and Polish does not get heated till somebody here proposes a Slavic language that would have more speakers than Ukrainian does.

Here you go, stats, you see that Ukraine has a 7m larger population than Poland, but it's already conceded that not everybody there speaks Ukrainian, putting Ukrainian into 3rd place. Are you claiming that 36 million Ukrainians speak Russian and not Ukrainian which would put Czechia in 3rd place with 10 million speakers?

Put up or shut up.

  Russia 143,500,000
  Ukraine 45,490,000
  Poland 38,530,000
  Czechia 10,200,000
  Belarus 9,498,700
  Bulgaria 7,265,000
  Serbia 7,164,000
  Slovakia 5,414,000
  Croatia 4,253,000
  Bosnia and 3,829,000
    Herzegovina
  Slovenia 2,060,000
  Montenegro 621,383

The people here ranting about how heated the topic is seem to be the people who want the topic to be heated, I'm thinking Putin knob polishers.

What Slavic languages are spoken by more people than Ukrainian?

Wikipedia says https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_Ukraine (with a dozen other languages under 1% each) top two:

  Ukrainian 32,577,468 67.53%
  Russian 14,273,670 29.59%
wikipedia also says as of 2023 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukrainian_language

32 million Ukrainian as 1st language
6.9 million Ukrainian as 2nd language
you see? nobody is heated up. And soon, the remaining Russian speakers will be able to learn Ukrainian in school making the problem go away completely.

i'm not favoring any part of the spectrum, they all contribute, that's why they all exist in every society. Ideologies is where structured ideas come from, but they're usually embraced with religious fervor to the exclusion of reality, blind to the majority (the middle and the other side) who are not convinced, and the middle is where they are lived out. The trick is to not water the ideas down to meaninglessness against the grindstones of apathy and practicality.

>These issues are really complicated because they aren’t left versus right. Conservatives and progressives both tend to be ideologically skeptical of enhancements/sharing of ID.

It's complicated within each party, but not overall. Idealogues prefer debating other idealogues because they use the same vocabularies and that preference is why they are always fighting, they like it. But the fat part of the curve in the middle is mostly made up of non idealogues who are quietly saying "can't you just shut up and compromise, let's be practical".

>This is not exactly right regarding Ukrainian. While it is the official language of Ukraine, in reality... let's say that not all Ukrainian people are actually speaking it.

your "adjustment" didn't propose what other Slavic language would outnumber Ukrainian to be 3rd behind Polish and Russian, so you didn't move the needle.

>How is preventing a Chinese brand from selling here not meddling in the free market?

because trade balances are established by free markets, but China doesn't allow many of our goods and does not allow free market competition. Also "strategic dumping" to establish supremacy in markets which can later be exploited.

also, "free market" does not have anything close to a precise meaning; i used it because you used it but it's highly ambiguous, better to rephrase sentences to accurately include the phrase "market clearing price" while identifying external strictures which might move the market clearing price away from where it should be.

fsckboy··on A stray "j" ruined my evening
the ANSI escape sequences for screen erasing start with ESC and end in J. When you display a string on a screen including a newline at the end of it, you need to erase to the end of the line on the screen so you don't leave predecessor garbage which would be confusing.

That's how the J got inserted, then whatever is processing this is swallowing the rest of the escape sequence but leaving the J. The fix is there, take the J with the rest of the escape sequence at whatever layer is doing this.

ESC[J erase in display (same as ESC[0J)
ESC[0J erase from cursor until end of screen
ESC[1J erase from cursor to beginning of screen
  ESC[2J erase entire screen
  ESC[3J erase saved lines
ASCII and then ANSI were invented as in-band communications and terminal control protocols, not "file formats". You thread filters together like beads on a string, where ASCII is somebody's job, and ANSI is somebody's job, and then the rendered text is presented to the user.

unix is ingenious how it has accomodated changes and conflicting ideas, incorporating the new squoze next to the old, like UTF-8 because the same people did that. It's not perfect, but it proved "worse is better" because it for a long time it outcompeted its alternatives and never became bloated and overburdened by bureaucratic committee ideas.

however today's developers did not "come up" in the same culture of apprenticeship learning so a lot of the clever subtlety has been lost and now worse is starting to be worse, and guess what, there is no better.
