Behold! The perfect man: A simpering, oversocialized, impotent, obedient nerd!

>What if, for example, a dentist refuses to remove malformed wisdom teeth because his morals don't allow him to fix problems that a person is born with, and only fixes tooth damage caused by accidents?

If every dentist did this, the genepool would improve.

The difference between anti-vax and anti-eugenics is that eugenics makes society more fragile by producing a monoculture, whereas vaccinations make society more durable due to the network effects in the spread of disease

fruitworks··on Startups are pushing the boundaries of reproductive genetics
There aren't any risks to take. Modern society is approaching a steady-state solution.

Eugenics and artificial selection results in monocultures. In the long run has the opposite effect of what you're describing.

fruitworks··on Startups are pushing the boundaries of reproductive genetics
The fundamental problem with eugenics, besides the immorality, is the misalignment of artifical selection with natural selection. The eugenicists always think they know best, but mother nature always gets the last word in the end

the efficiency of converting it to electricity would be low, due to low absolute temperature difference and thus carnot effeciency.

not really. I have two options: android or ios. And android is following ios lockstep with practices like the recent changes to play integrity.

fruitworks··on Apple alerts exploit developer that his iPhone was targeted with gov spyware
The difference is that it's completely plausible to protect against a cyberattack, but completely implausible to protect against a nuclear attack.

The onus is on Apple and their userbase to protect their own computers, not the rest of society to patrol and regulate unstoppable "information crime" against them

fruitworks··on Apple alerts exploit developer that his iPhone was targeted with gov spyware
so what? As GP suggests, they are not nessisary for the development of exploits.

It just seems like every wiki results in defensive mod cabals

fruitworks··on You are the scariest monster in the woods
I don't assert that there is a political solution to AI. It's possible that both avenues result in a total centralization of power.
fruitworks··on You are the scariest monster in the woods
>Are you claiming a lack of gun / AI control is democratizing?

This is obviously the case. It results in a greater distribution of power.

>That's not working for (the lack of) gun control in the US at the moment though.

In the US, one political party is pro gun-control and the other is against. The party with the guns gets to break into the capitol, and the party without the guns gets to watch. I expect the local problem of AI safety, like gun safety will also be self-solving in this manner.

Eventually, Gun control will not work anywhere, regardless of regulation. The last time I checked, you don't need a drone license. And what are the new weapons of war? Not guns. The technology will increase in acessibility until the regulation is impossible to enforce.

The idea that you can control the use of technology by limiting it to some ordained group of is very brittle. It is better to rely on a balance of powers. The only way to secure civilization in the long run is to make the defensive technology stronger than the offensive technology.

fruitworks··on You are the scariest monster in the woods
evolution isn't a directed effort in the same way that statistical learning is. The goal of evolution is not to produce the most inteligent life. It is not nessisarially an efficient process either.
fruitworks··on You are the scariest monster in the woods
All of the solutions to AI "safety" are analagous to gun control: it is a centralization of power.
fruitworks··on Apple M5 chip
Consoles are dying and PCs are replacing them. Like the original commenter suggested, people want to run PC games. The market has decided that the benefits of compatibility outweigh the added complexity. On the PC you have access to a massive expanding back-catalog of old software, far more competition in the market, mods, and you're able to run whatever software you want alongside games (discord, teamspeak, game streaming, etc.).

Macs are personal computers, whether or not they come from some official IBM Personal Computer compatibility bloodline.

fruitworks··on Apple M5 chip
What happens when apple switches to riscv, or depreciates versions of metal in a backwards incompatible way, or mandates some new code signing technique?

The attitude in the apple developer ecosystem is that apple tells you to jump, and you ask how high.

You could complain that Playstation 4 software is incompatible with Playstation 3. This is the PC gaming industry, there are higher standards for the compatibility of software that only a couple companies can ignore.

fruitworks··on Sysco Is Not "Ruining Restaurants"
I think it comes from a lack of information on the consumer end or a lack of choices due to monopolization on the producer end.

Also I reject using the word "enshittification" because it comes off as childish.
