froggychairs··on Tell HN: You can apparently get GPT-3 to cough up its own source code
OP do you actually believe this is GPT-3s source code? (Because no reason why that would be in the training data). It’s not clear from your title or post.

If you’re showing off a novel example disregard the question about. This example highlights how LLMs will treat any question with an attempt at a truthful answer even if they don’t know the truth themselves. I’m not sure if RLHF alone will be able to solve for this failure mode.

froggychairs··on Ask HN: Best books read in 2022?
Also read that book this year. Absolutely fantastic. The audiobook is one of the better audiobooks I’ve listened too recently as well
froggychairs··on Beyond Meat is struggling, and the plant-based meat industry worries
We know red meat isn’t healthy. Most (not all) fake meats try to replicate red meat.

What proof do you have them being unhealthy? Impossible for example has fairly simple list of ingredients. Better macros than burger ground.

Anecdotally. My father in law has had to stop eating red meat due to health concerns. He enjoys impossible products just fine with no negative concerns in blood biomarkers or examines (several years running now). We are controlling for exercise patterns too. He’s just replaced his frequent burgers with an impossible patty instead.

This comment is just a wild claim with no evidence and falsely equates “processed” with “unhealthy”

froggychairs··on Show HN: Yet Another Node.js Framework
Very awesome to learn about a new language in the Node.js ecosystem

Some feedback:

- I don’t know what Imba is, and likely a lot of other devs don’t either. Your front page should sell me on both Imba and your framework

- When I’m personally considering a new framework. I love example projects so I can see how common usecases might look in code. Consider having a few example projects easily discoverable from the home page for folks to sift through

Good luck!

froggychairs··on AI will dominate the animation industry in less than 5 years
A lot of fantastical claims made in this article with little citation.

I definitely don’t think the author is wrong here. It is very likely AI animation tools will have a huge impact on the industry.

I have friends who work in animation and illustration professionally. Based off their predictions, the truth is likely far more mundane. These AI models will likely just become tools that automate or simplify existing animation workflows for larger projects. This would definitely result in less labor needed for any given project.

For smaller projects. You might see folks use AI for the entire thing

> “the AI art movement is already causing a sizeable reduction in artist commissions, and that effect will soon trickle down into B2B and wider world.”

This line specifically made me lose confidence in the author’s ability to predict the future. Cursory Google searches return nothing. This is also a very difficult thing to measure at a population level. In my friend group of illustrators (which is a very small sample of the population) all of them have used TikTok and seen their commissions drastically increase in the last few months. That doesn’t mean ALL artists are making more money though. Neither does a few mediocre artists losing commissions due to AI either.

froggychairs··on How to easily type scientific notes with TeXmacs [video]
I legitimately assumed it was this exact combination…… Good to know it isn’t!
froggychairs··on Young Australians just won a human rights case against an enormous coal mine
Re: 4C

It is true that technically a 4C world is survivable, but it will be an immensely hot world (land warms faster than oceans. So that 4C is the average of the two) and we won’t be able to sustain our current population. Vast swathes of the planet will be not fit for farming. Especially already arid regions today. So entertaining this world means entertaining the death and suffering of billions.

We are long past the need for “balance”. We need to decarbonize yesterday and it is unfortunate that workers in fossil fuel industries might lose their job along the way. We could do what most climate policy think tanks suggest and provide compensated job training & a guaranteed position for fossil fuel workers transitioning to a cleaner energy field.

froggychairs··on Is Elon Right?
It’s probably safe to assume the truth is mundane. Tesla stock is definitely overvalued (at least it was a few months ago. I haven’t checked recently) and the Tesla brand will likely just become a staple car brand (ala Honda, GM, Ford, Toyota, etc).
froggychairs··on Is Elon Right?
Is this link about Betteridge’s law of headlines correct?
froggychairs··on Tell HN: Happy Thanksgiving
I find the comments and discussion often provide far more value compared to the actual articles. Especially when it comes to links about health. Lots of pseudoscience out there and very grateful for the knowledgeable community to shed light on it when it shows up.
froggychairs··on The U.S. Needs More Housing Than Almost Anyone Can Imagine
Zoning for who? America has no issue with single family zoning.

I’m assuming you’re speaking about middle and high density zoning. Since the issues you're describing are extremely common for those zoning projects.

froggychairs··on Tuvalu turns to the metaverse as rising seas threaten existence
Can’t read the full article since it’s behind a paywall, but the intro text says they’re building a digital version of the island

Not sure why it matters where this digital version is located? Could be metaverse. Could be a mod for Skyrim. Could be its own separate Unreal app. Honestly you might get more users and attention if this was a Skyrim mod.

Absolutely insane a nation can see its end coming and knowing the vast majority of the world governments do not care the existential risk these people’s culture face.

froggychairs··on Ask HN: What is the thing you've built that you regret the most?
This type of China vs US narrative where existential stakes are implied is just dumb. The technological Cold War we’re in is not going to result in the collapse of either nation.
froggychairs··on Memento mori
Beautiful visualization. I’ve thought of doing something similar but having some sort of automation so it is my desktop or phone wallpaper.
froggychairs··on The good delusion: has effective altruism broken bad?
Not OP, but I do work in reducing harms of deployed AI systems at a big tech company

When most EA/Rationalist folks discuss AI Safety. They’re talking about AGI, a hypothetical construct that we have no way of proving is even possible

Now there’s nothing inherently wrong with funding research of that sort.

The problem comes is that many EA/Rationalist folks begin downplaying legitimate tangible risks on the horizon (I’ve had prominent EA folks tell me that Climate Change is not an existential risk) or that many of these AI Safety researchers actively ignore how to reduce harms of the AI we have deployed today.

This existential measuring contest is just so odd and unnecessary. I really don’t care if you think AI Safety is a legitimate problem. I personally don’t but it’s when they begin to downplay others actual catastrophes that many of us take issue.

froggychairs··on The gut microbiome helps social skills develop in the brain in fish
This headline should be corrected to say that. Disappointed in Quanta for resorting to clickbait. It’s cool research even if it’s just fish!
froggychairs··on People living on Earth – All on this page, one by one
If your concern is some sort of collapse because we’ve hit some mystic 8 billion im afraid the number of people on Earth won’t be the tipping point of any societal collapse

The planet can support our populations easily, but it can’t support our populations at the rate of resource extraction we are undertaking. Not for long anyways. Maybe your questioning is better served directed in there.

froggychairs··on Ask HN: How do I start feeling secure financially as a tech worker?
I’m not in your life situation but been wondering this same question recently. I also have at least 6 months worth of savings paid, but my wife works a decent job

First off it’s important to remember you really are fine. You have more savings than majority of people. You work in a lucrative field and have a set of skills that are in demand. Even if the economic situation is dire. Your savings runway alone has me confident in your situation

It’s scary though! The best I would do is worry less about trying to bring in a second income yourself. Don’t deprive yourself of time with your family. Reduce costs at home where you can and pocket those savings.

Downloading my expenses from the past year into CSV and just plotting that out in Excel helped a lot.
