froggy··on Ask HN: any of the HNers have kids & work from home?
I've been a stay-at-home dad for about 5 years now and can relate. My oldest son (14 months at the time) was always getting sick at his daycare and he twice got so sick he ended up in the ER. After that we decided one of us was staying home. Best decision we ever made. I know later in life I will look back at these years as the "glory years" because of all the memories and time spent together.

When I'm not on daddy duty I develop and support two web apps on the side. The only real work I've been able to consistently get in is during nap time (usually 2 hours per day after lunch), a 6-hour chunk on an odd Saturday or Sunday, and at night when they are sleeping. I can also fire off an email here and there throughout the day, but for the most part the "business" comes second to family responsiblities. When I'm with the kids I try not to let the business take up too many brain cycles so I can be fully "present".

froggy··on IPad Makes Space in Japan's Tiny Homes by Removing Bookshelves
Agreed, except for the destruction part. Maybe the publishers could pass the books on to nonprofits to donate to developing countries, libraries, schools, etc.
froggy··on Lisp inventor John McCarthy on human progress and its sustainability
Great article, but it might be more complete with a mention of the rising acidity of the oceans and how as the ph drops, many of the shelled animals at the bottom of the ocean food chain who depend on their shells for protection will not be able to form shells (the acidity eats away at the calcium carbonate) making a whole category of the food chain susceptible to extinction.

I appreciate the optimism in this article that humans are "on the right path", but the bottom line is humans have already caused a major disruption to the biosphere via carbon emissions, and the carbon emissions are still increasing which will have an effect of ocean life, thus humans.

I'd like to see more thought going into "helping people live better lives while living in balance with nature", rather than "We can expand the human species to 20 billion - let's do it!"

froggy··on Google Releases mod_pagespeed for Apache
Given two image filenames: "pogo-sticks.png" and "ic.HASH.x,pogo-sticks,p.png", I'm willing to bet the former will rank higher and lead to more pogo stick traffic and sales because of the straightforward filename.

From the horse's mouth: "optimizing your image filenames and alt text makes it easier for image search projects like Google Image Search to better understand your images."

http://static.googleusercontent.com/external_content/untrust...

Anything that makes it harder for Google to understand your site is a losing business proposition.

I'd rather use PageSpeed for Firefox (optimize in dev, set the appropriate filenames, then deploy to production) to avoid any possible ranking penalties caused by this filter in production.

froggy··on Google Releases mod_pagespeed for Apache
It looks like the 'Optimize Images' filter rewrites a different file name for the optimized image:

Before: <img src="images/BikeCrashIcn.png" alt="Bike Crash">

After: <img src="images/images/ic.HASH.x,BikeCrashIcn,p.png" alt="Bike Crash">

If you get significant search traffic from Google or Bing Image Search you'll probably want to disable this filter.

froggy··on Scott Adams: The Ultimate Food and Exercise App
It would be a pain to pull a smartphone out before each meal to snap a picture. To put some UX polish on this idea, it should be an embedded appliance fitted inside the stomach or other suitable organ. I'm not a doctor, but installing a device that "reads all input" would be more accurate, user-friendly, and not require food photography 3-6 times a day.
froggy··on 5 foods it's cheaper to grow
I'd add to that list Blueberry bushes if you have the right type of soil (acidic/well-drained). They don't need pesticide spraying and each bush can grow up to 15 pounds/year of berries.

My yard project this fall is digging out a row of clay soil and making a raised amended bed for 8-9 blueberry highbushes. Blueberry plants are finicky about soil PH and drainage, so I am prepping the bed with sulfur, coarse sand, peat, and ground pine bark chips and getting it right for planting by spring 2012. I expect they will produce ~100 pounds per year in 5 years.

froggy··on Is there any hope for our overfished oceans?
Fish farms create high concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus which gets into the oceans and spawns toxic algal blooms. Algal blooms kill marine life, notably the coral reefs that so many fish depend on for shelter.

froggy··on Could Boxes of Water Help Reforest the World?
The box is brilliant but I don't understand the recommendation to bury the young tree in up to 4 inches of sand after removing the box. It doesn't seem natural and wouldn't it stress and possibly suffocate the small roots and trunk base? It sounds worse than a "mulch volcano". The hemp cloth could be staked to the ground and a small amount of mulch or nearby soil used instead.

After reading this I am extremely angry. What the hell are we foolish humans doing to the planet?

froggy··on On the Shortness of Life - Seneca (50 AD)
"His new strains of crops saved about a billion lives"

Yes, but with the extra 1 billion humans on earth, how many more animal species will be pushed into extinction each decade? How many more acres of rain forest will be destroyed every week? How many more barrels of oil will be pulled from the earth and burned into the air?

I'm personally against mass-scale chopping, burning, and killing, which I know that more people on this planet leads to.

Maybe the meme "the human species must expand at all costs" needs an evil check.

I get the warning with Chrome 4.0.249.64 on Windows.
froggy··on Ask HN: Wrist Pain
Completely agree with geuis above. You need to work out. I had the same problem 2 years ago when I was programming long hours (dull persistent numbness, and eventually sharp pain). I self-diagnosed it as wrist tendonitis and wore a splint brace for a few weeks. Once the wrist felt better, I got back to the gym and started doing light weights with a sort of stretch bandage on my wrist. Also bought a resistance hand grip to squeeze whenever I could and did hand/wrist stretching exercises daily for a few months.

This fixed it within a couple months and I haven't had a flare-up since.

froggy··on Google launches WhatBrowser.org, talks web browsers for Mom and Dad
IE6 and IE7 are a major roadblock to Google's vision of the future web, since next-gen Google applications can't work well in those browsers, ie. Google Wave and Javascript-rich apps. Ultimately they want to get people away from IE and into a different browser, preferably Chrome, so they can increase their web dominance.

My 3 year-old and 5-year old are around others of different skin colors often and neither have ever asked about skin color or verbalized anything like that. That's because they're not around racists. My wife and I recognize others based on their character not skin color. One friend of theirs is Malcolm, not "the black kid". Another kid is Benjamin, not "the asian kid". If the morons of this world would stop giving color so much attention, maybe the next generation would realize that skin color doesn't matter at all.
