friedturkey··on Discord is a black hole for information
I mean, people aren't really keeping up with the top posts 3 weeks ago on HN, reddit, or twitter. That's why reposts are so common.

The first two are easily indexed by google, so that's one advantage. Twitter has a site-wide search. Discord doesn't (yet?) have such a thing, but I think the focus being private communities might keep that from happening... unless they get bought out and some MBA says "how can we better get clicks?"

friedturkey··on NFT marketplace shuts, citing 'rampant' fakes, plagiarism problem
I'm not really surprised. Every time there's an unregulated market with the potential for loads of cash, people rush in to scrape up every cent before either it gets regulated or everyone else runs out with the money.
friedturkey··on 15 of 23 Monkeys with Elon Musk’s Neuralink Brain Chips Reportedly Died
Self-driving cars have been postponed indefinitely. I don't trust his companies with human brain implants before they can get cars to reliably drive accident-free.
friedturkey··on Nearly a third of TV ads play to empty rooms
I'm always fearful of posting my tech nightmares on HN because so many people here work in industries that exist just to fry brains with ads. Probably most are rolling their eyes saying "We're not that evil." But somebody is thinking "Hmmm."
friedturkey··on Marijuana accelerates growth of HPV-related head and neck cancer (2020)
Apparently about 80% of sexually active people have some form of HPV.

Even when people think they don't have it, it's quite probable they do. Statistically speaking, more than a couple people in these comments have some form of it.

friedturkey··on Have we been thinking about inflation all wrong?
“Tanked” according to economists.

If the news weren’t telling us the economy tanked, nobody would be worried. Houses are affordable, jobs are everywhere, people aren’t going into lifelong debt because of medical issues.

In countries with inflation, the wealth divide is massive and growing. Wages might be up sometimes. But house prices and health insurance far outstrip any gains there. I guess milk is a little cheaper though. Maybe that tips the scales.

friedturkey··on Have we been thinking about inflation all wrong?
Japan says its economy has been in deflation since the 90s.[1] Everybody is working. Sure, the numbers aren't going up and there aren't constant booms of new companies being valued at 100 billion and exploding (which draws ire from economists and billionaire investors), but quality of life has been consistently high for normal people. Homelessness is barely present and people who want a job can find one quickly.

If the books say it's wrong, maybe it's time they get updated.

friedturkey··on Have we been thinking about inflation all wrong?
Japan is said to be deflationary (until covid at least) and lacks an unemployment problem.
friedturkey··on Have we been thinking about inflation all wrong?
Yeah, deflation is awful. Imagine our continuously increased production and efficiency resulting in goods becoming cheaper and the value of the working person’s dollar going farther.

Horrifying.

friedturkey··on Incomplete history of Forbes.com as a platform for scams, grift, bad journalism
To be fair to Forbes, the media was all over her as a female Steve Jobs and declaring it the beginning of the girl boss era. A lot of people who criticized her were shut down as being sexist.
friedturkey··on The data are clear: The boys are not all right
Wild to me that data showing men are facing objective decline is called a win, just because the gender gap is smaller (or speeding in the opposite direction as before, with regards to college entrance rates) due to the situation being worse for men.

Society really loves to kick them while they’re down these days.

friedturkey··on U.S. university reverses decision to remove Olympic protest posters
Outside of HN, social media is absolutely flooded with it. Reddit is particularly awful.

There's a set few countries where if you post anything not explicitly negative about them, people come out of the wood works to post a few set phrases.

friedturkey··on U.S. university reverses decision to remove Olympic protest posters
Yeah, just like anyone who openly mentions they worked for Facebook should ever be trusted under any circumstances. And we all know what "cybersecurity" means after a stint with that company.

This is a dumb game to play. Absolute brain worms to think anyone against your ideas is a shill.

friedturkey··on U.S. university reverses decision to remove Olympic protest posters
It’s probably because saying anything positive about (forbidden country) gets you permanently labeled a CCP drone.

May as well add “couldn’t help but notice you say Chinese people are just like people anywhere else. Curious.”

friedturkey··on U.S. university reverses decision to remove Olympic protest posters
It’d be nice if people actually focused on the artificial island making or Taiwan’s independence, but “activists” (I’m not sure if that’s even the proper word in this instance) aren’t really concerned about that and most people don’t even know about the former.

But an increasing number of people, especially Americans, really think the Chinese government/police really are just openly killing people in the streets with no consequence (lol), they’ve enslaved the entirety of Africa and stolen the land due to the debt of building a few trains, and other bizarre stuff. Any time anyone is like “I’ve been there and it’s not that bad,” people scream that you’re a shill and scream “WINNIE THE POOH” as if that does anything. The level is discourse involving the country is embarrassingly low, and when it reaches that level, it does just two things: breeds absolute hatred (hate crimes involving Asians are up) and pushes people not buying into it the the opposite direction of the propaganda.

friedturkey··on DNA has a 521-year half-life (2012)
How does DNA half-life factor into cells and seeds that last thousands of years and are still viable? [1]

I assume seed cells probably aren’t dividing, but I guess maybe they could be using energy and slowly reproducing? And apparently bacterial spores can basically freeze themselves in time for thousands of years and wake themselves up once conditions are favorable.

friedturkey··on Satellite finds methane leaks from gas pipelines
Many places let you choose your energy provider. People choose the cheapest ones.

So yes, they're at fault. It's like crying about slaves making chocolate but paying for the cheapest chocolate bar instead of opting for more expensive ones that verify their supply chain. Talk is cheap.

friedturkey··on Satellite finds methane leaks from gas pipelines
But people sure do want cheap fuel and electricity.

Cheapness comes at a cost, and people consistently choose the cheapest providers when given a choice. Absolving ourselves is responsibility is why progress has stalled for decades.

friedturkey··on Satellite finds methane leaks from gas pipelines
> But remember to reduce your personal carbon footprint! /s

Where do you think the demand for gas pipelines comes from?

Spoilers: our collective desire for it drives the development of pipelines.

friedturkey··on Apple's privacy push cost Meta $10B
I doubt it. Even with universal ad blocking on their platforms, iPhones are the minority worldwide and Macs even more so.

Websites would just make sites painful to use for Apple users and force them into exceptionally expensive subscriptions (which most people won’t pay for) or onto cheap devices that allow endless ads.

friedturkey··on There Is a Much Larger Problem Than the Great Resignation
No need to be so angry. I said people can’t just choose to make 250k, unlike privileged folks here. No need to rage about the reality.

I was paying far more than 1200 for a spot in Portland a good 30+ minutes from downtown. A friend was paying around that and having to commute an hour. Not everyone is as lucky as you. Countless Americans are struggling yet people here say “I’m rich so I don’t see the problem.” Cool. You’re rich and privileged. Most people aren’t.

I moved to another country. I pay less and get a higher quality of life. It’s wild seeing the frogs being boiled and getting louder than ever about how there’s no problem because they’re not feeling it yet.

friedturkey··on There Is a Much Larger Problem Than the Great Resignation
Cool. Most people aren't given a life that allows them to just make 250k if they want to. As a programmer, tech workers are the laziest people around but incredibly overpaid. The people making 1/4 your pay are busting their asses harder than we can imagine.
friedturkey··on Uyghur kids detail abuse at China's boarding schools in Xinjiang
I've been to both.

Thailand is the place where I felt like I could be arrested for being slightly out of line and had to tread very carefully. People in China had no problem complaining about their government, and there aren't portraits of their dear leader plastered everywhere like in Thailand.

I also never saw people openly using drugged up and sedated kids as a begging tool in China, but I sure did in Thailand.

The perception of the countries always feels astonishingly backwards to me.

friedturkey··on There Is a Much Larger Problem Than the Great Resignation
Averages lean upwards due to some people making millions.

Federal taxes aren't the only taxes. State and other taxes are factored in.

Rent may average at $1100 in an ideal world, but near cities, $1100 is increasingly rare. Every time this is mentioned someone will chime in and say "yeah but I live in rural Nebraska and pay less than that." Which is fine. But then your employment options are slim, most jobs aren't paying $40k a month, not everyone is a tech contractor making 200k a year from their bedroom on a lakefront, not everyone wants to be or can be a tech contractor, and a lot of jobs performed by "normal" people (people on HN are generally highly paid and anything but typical) will involve long commute times unless they're living in the middle of town... in which case rent prices shoot up fast.

The average person also needs to pay for health care in the US (even if their company provides insurance, they're fucked when they get sick because insurance covers very little for most people not in very expensive programs). They have car loans. They have college loans. They need to pay deposits just to move. 9-5s are being replaced with 9-6s and people have less free time.

When you factor in all of that, the "average office worker" looks like a dream life to a lot of people. What people considered a boring hell of a life in 1965 is a fantasy unobtainable to an increasing number of "average" people. Comments claiming it's "easy" for "average" people here make me think some people live in a bubble detached from all reality.

friedturkey··on Silenced AirTags with disabled speakers are popping up for sale online
First world countries make efforts to stop thieves.

Meanwhile, countries in America's league do not.

friedturkey··on Uyghur kids detail abuse at China's boarding schools in Xinjiang
Thailand has a rampant slave problem. Their seafood industry is propped up by slaves and the sex slavery that’s prevalent throughout the country is sickening. The ongoing human rights abuses and absolute suppression of anyone who questions the king is also terrifying.

After going to Thailand and seeing the situation there first hand, I’ve decided to never buy a Thai product ever again.

friedturkey··on Reading on smartphone affects sigh generation, brain activity, and comprehension
A lot of modern movies feel like slightly higher budget TV shows. There’s still some truly great stuff, but oftentimes I’m wondering where the 200 million dollars went. I feel like movies are increasingly being made for a TV screen and streaming services, so a lot of the grandiose nature of older movies is fading.

The 90s was an odd period with countless great movies and massive budgets.

friedturkey··on Singapore prime minister Lee Hsien Loong’s Sudoku solver (2018)
It’s not hard to find videos of public straight sex on the internet. Homeless encampments are full of that.

You just seem fixated on gay men to a degree that’s beyond odd.

friedturkey··on There are too many video games
Odd to focus on games when Seattle is propped up by a tech industry with people being overpaid by hundreds of thousands to make useless apps and websites.

Indie game devs are usually making things at home during their downtime. As far as I know, there’s no volunteer hobbyist bridge repair club, so they’re not really taking away from anything. Meanwhile you have companies that have an easily replaceable service like Slack selling for nearly 30 billion dollars. That’s what’s swallowing up money and consuming the time of people who’d otherwise be making something useful.

friedturkey··on Singapore prime minister Lee Hsien Loong’s Sudoku solver (2018)
I lived in the second gayest city in America for a good while and I wasn’t walking in on gay orgies. I don’t recall a single instance of gay public affection despite being outside often, but I also don’t recall any straight instances either because I don’t care about it. I have good success finding desirable partners and don’t hold feelings of jealousy or anything so any instances of PDA leave my mind because I don’t care about them.

It seems like either a personal problem, or a problem with lawlessness in general. Would you be happier walking in on straight orgies? Is that legal in Singapore? Seems wild that they’d allow that, but your post implies it.
