freyfogle··on The SR-71 Blackbird Astro-Nav System worked by tracking the stars
Best bit of weirdness about UTM is the exception made for zone 32V so that Norway fits into a single zone, see: https://en.osm.town/@opencage/109694749637123570
freyfogle··on The SR-71 Blackbird Astro-Nav System worked by tracking the stars
We had a great example of this in a recent Geomob London talk: ask Google Maps to route from Wairiki, Fiji (-16.8048, 179.9893) to Welagi, Fiji (-16.7349, -179.9439), two villages on the coastal road of the same island and about 10km apart, but as you can see from the coordinates on opposite sides of the anti-meridian.

You get "Sorry, we could not calculate driving directions from "Wairiki, Fiji" to "Welagi, Fiji"

freyfogle··on Meta Q1 2023 Earning Results
Oh of course. No doubt the techniques have advanced, but all that was possible even 20 years ago.

The question is what do you do when you don't get the answer you want? - when it shows that you are losing audience, though perhaps slowly. It is very difficult/impossible for a manager to say "let's miss this month's revenue goal for the long term benefit of slowing audience loss". And so instead you come with other reasons to explain the audience loss and/or justify keeping the ads. And so the audience loss continues. You are the boiling frog.

freyfogle··on Meta Q1 2023 Earning Results
It's very easy to measure revenue and how you are doing against the monthly or quarterly goal. It's very hard to measure whether you put so many ads on the page that people get fed up and don't come back. So the end result is you put more ads on the page, and month by month people drift away.

Source: I worked at yahoo! way back in the day and lived through exactly this.

freyfogle··on Null Island is one of the most visited places on Earth, and it doesn’t exist
Null Island is great of course, but when it comes to non-existent "places" in the ocean I prefer Point Nemo https://en.osm.town/@opencage/110207798392328927
freyfogle··on Evaluation of Location Encoding Systems (2021)
This evaluation is hardly unbiased, it's promoting the conclusion that Google's Open Location Code is the way to go (as you might have guessed from the fact that it is in the google/open-location-code repo). Some of the points about others are incorrect or outdated.

freyfogle··on Don't believe ChatGPT – we do not offer a "phone lookup" service
Hi, Ed from OpenCage here, author of the post.

We do have python tutorials and SDKs showing how to use our service for ... geocoding, the actual service we provide.

I wrote the post mainly to have a page I can point people to when they ask why "it isn't working". Rather than take the user through a tour of past posts I need something simple they will hopefully read. But fair point, I can add a link to last year's post about the erronious youtube tutorials as well.

What I think you can't appeciate is the difference of scale. A faulty youtube video drives a few users. In the last weeks ChatGPT is sending us several orders of magnitude more frustrated sign-ups.

freyfogle··on Don't believe ChatGPT – we do not offer a "phone lookup" service
ChatGPT very convincingly recommends us for a service we don't provide.

Dozens of people are signing up to our site every day, then getting frustrated when "it doesn't work".

Please do NOT trust the nonsense ChatGPT spits out.

freyfogle··on Wild mammals are making a comeback in Europe
Here's a cool service (unfortunately I haven't yet been able to use it) to do a "European safari" and go see some of these wild animals. Good fun, but also important to provide an economic benefit to the local community

freyfogle··on FlipCoords – lat, lng lng, lat
yes. It is just a little tool for people who work in geospatial, where every other tool needs those two numbers in a slightly different format.

Here's some good background on the problem (linked in the FAQ) https://macwright.com/lonlat/

freyfogle··on FlipCoords – lat, lng lng, lat
yes, that is known as reverse geocoding (exactly what our API does). The challenge is then people will crawl the site at massive volume to get free geocoding. But still perhaps you are right, perhaps we could put the country or region to at least show approximate location.
freyfogle··on FlipCoords – lat, lng lng, lat
Author here. I've wasted years of my life reformatting coordinates to and from lat/lng to lng/lat or into named parameters. Enough!

We (@OpenCage) built a thing: flipcoords.com
