frandroid··on Ingenious Low-Cost Tilt Detection System (2018)
You ship them in a box with one sticker applied to the side, of course. #inception
frandroid··on New sense discovered in dog noses: the ability to detect heat
As the article about epistemology posted yesterday mentioned, at some point, a difference in degree becomes a difference in kind.
frandroid··on New sense discovered in dog noses: the ability to detect heat
But somehow dogs don't seem to care too much about armpits, in spite of being smelly and warm.
frandroid··on New sense discovered in dog noses: the ability to detect heat
Good god, it's called the crotch.
frandroid··on An industry dedicated to making foods crispy
The prose in this article is as crispy as the chips they describe... Some sort of crispception.
frandroid··on Tech can't remember what to do in a down market
It does seem like GP has not heard of the ant and the grasshopper fable, though.
frandroid··on Tech can't remember what to do in a down market
The Canada Pension Plan is not a proper pension plan, which is why in the 1970-2000 period, good employers offered good pension plans. Now everything is matched RRSP contributions if you're lucky. It's possible that housing costs will never come back down; now that the housing bubble has pushed way beyond the metros, "just sell your downtown house and move to the suburbs" is not a retirement strategy anymore, if it ever was. (Bloody London, ON is getting a fat influx of Torontonians seeking cheap housing! That's nuts!)

So people should either be buying a house that they can afford not to lose in a downtown, and/or put some good money in their RRSP. The earlier, the smarter.

frandroid··on Citroën introduces a two-seat EV that costs €2,644 and then €19.99 a month
Ils auraient pu l'appeler la 2CE!
frandroid··on NIH trial of remdesivir for COVID-19 begins in hospitalized adults in Nebraska
Or you know, we can determine that the cost of keeping people healthy is a social good and invest in that. I don't think we need market indicators to show that we don't want people to die. And we know that that market signal distorts the needs addressed so that chronic alleviation things get more attention than one-time cures...
frandroid··on DOJ plans to strike against encryption while the Techlash iron is hot
It's not because they have been trying to forever that they aren't going for another big push right now. Attorney General William Barr is spearheading an active campaign on this, it was headline news here a few weeks ago. Don't be complacent.
frandroid··on Katherine Johnson, NASA mathematician, has died at 101
A few years ago, a friend of mine summarized Margaret Hamilton's contributions to computing; the post went pretty viral (it sat atop this very site), enough that some other people made copy-cat posts. A couple years later she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. I don't think the two events were disconnected...
frandroid··on If cash gets damaged, this Treasury team will make sure it’s not a lost cause
You can also read WaPo by carefully timing a click on your browser's Reader Mode icon when the article loads. (The icon disappears once it detects that you're not a subscriber, so you need to snipe it)
frandroid··on How communist Bulgaria became a leader in technology, robotics and sci-fi (2018)
In industrial societies, we re-invested about 20% of our GDP into production capital; under Stalin, that percentage was closer to 40%. That diminished after he died, to improve people's quality of life, but at the expense of overall productivity improvement.
frandroid··on Stuff I said at Kansas City Startup Weekend that sounded smart (2011)
> customers are very averse to potential scams on the internet. They quickly notice if a company is pretending to be something it’s not, and they remember that the company was misleading for a long, long time.

You mean all 30 people who clicked on your ad? It's not like you're throwing $30K in AdWords for this...

frandroid··on Varoufakis to Publish Notorious Eurogroup Recordings from 2015 Meetings
It's been 5 years, and the Eurogroup destroyed the Greek economy. I don't think it's unfair to now reveal the contents of these discussions. It's high time to see if it was corruption, or compromise, which happened.
frandroid··on Stranded after driving out of cellphone range in app-powered smart car
I love Twitter this way, which is built "offline first". Twitter will let you read everything in your timeline that you have previously downloaded, let you reply to and like as many tweets as you want, and never complain about lack of connectivity. It'll just dutifully queue your requests and act on them once you're back online. It's one of the only connected apps properly usable on the subway.
frandroid··on Stop Using Encrypted Email
Actually no. The title got my attention, and reading through rid me of any illusions I was harbouring about encrypted emails. (Granted, there weren't many left, but anyway.) A title like "Encrypted messaging apps like Signal preferred over PGP" what have been glossed over. At some point you have to tell technologists that their bad advice to people who really need the technology could get the latter killed/imprisoned/tortured.
frandroid··on Stop Using Encrypted Email
Either they are secure, or they are not.
frandroid··on The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only known eight-sided pyramid
And there I was expecting that it had a buried bottom half, making it the shape of a D8...
frandroid··on Boeing finds debris left in new 737 MAXes, now in storage
Sooner? Two 737-MAX8s have gone down already!
frandroid··on Wearable Microphone Jamming
Stylish!
frandroid··on Pen Testing Ships. A year in review
I used to keep a fake password sticky on my monitor to make people like you lose it. :)
frandroid··on The Age of Instagram Face
They're not embedded, but they're linked... Is linked content not part of the article?
frandroid··on The Problem with Palm Oil
> 92 to 184 teragrams of carbon dioxide

Usually emissions of CO2 are measured in tons... This is a sneaky measurement change. wtf is a teragram? Okay, turns out it's a million tons, or as we used to call it, a megatonne. WHYYY

frandroid··on I Worked for a Criminal Organization
No wonder the Québec government swooped in and mandated a government POS terminal for the food service industry. :)
frandroid··on Kickstarter employees vote to unionize
That's the thing with Germany, they have a management-labour relations regime that is collaborative rather than combative... Management has accepted that they can improve their productivity if they work with their labour unions rather than against them. Employees get treated better and management gets good productivity out of their workers. Everyone wins. I wonder what it would take to introduce this model to North American companies without state coercion...
frandroid··on Signal is finally bringing its secure messaging to the masses
> Storing conversations is introducing a massive security hole.

Sure, but that could be up to every sender to decide whether they want their messages to be view once/view for 24hrs/store forever.

frandroid··on Collecting stamps from countries that don’t exist
> coating them with a common substance

Covering stamps in clear glue so that your correspondent could remove the cancelling stamp when steaming them off the envelope for eventual re-use was something that was commonly discussed during the heyday of the zine scene in the 1990s. Now postage has become so obscenely expensive again for anything beyond a letter that maybe I should get back into the glueing trade... :P

frandroid··on Amazon can’t end fake reviews, but its new system might drown them out
That's what usually happens. Amusingly, in the form of Amazon gift cards (so you go out and buy more products for review...)
frandroid··on Amazon can’t end fake reviews, but its new system might drown them out
You can do all this manually, but really you just described a form of machine learning.
