frandroid··on The Mystery of the Missing Bus Riders
Toronto now has open boarding (i.e. you can enter at any door) through all its streetcar lines and many bus lines. The new streetcars have totally separated the drivers from the passengers, so payment is more of an honour system + fare cops* proposition, compared to the old "show the pass/pay the driver" paradigm. Boarding speed and fare evasion have both increased.

*: "Revenue Protection Officers", a totally non-Orwellian job title.

frandroid··on Tesla’s success in Europe catches industry off guard
> They market themselves as environmentally friendly while representing a comedically small percent of global emissions reduction. And within the auto industry itself the increasing efficiency of ICE vehicles has reduced emissions by far more than Tesla and their electric car hype.

The emissions reductions attained by manufacturers have been done while fighting tooth and nail against them; also, it's good that they're reducing emissions, but you just eliminate them completely by driving a Tesla.

The comparison to BDSM is incorrect. BDSM is about "abuse" that one enjoys due to established parameters. I don't think anyone at the receiving end of abuse within F/OSS enjoys the abuse and seeks it out. That's why the codes of conduct exist, to... bring F/OSS in line with the expected ethical standards of scenes such as BDSM, so to speak.

Iraq had a decent human development index before Gulf Wars 1 & 2, and the intervening sanctions. (I don't want to downplay the brutality of Hussein's regime, guilty of some genocides, but.)

That's not "making a deposit" means, but I get your point. If that's what the OP meant, then I take issue with their wording. "Making a deposit" and "transferring money" are two different types of financial transactions.

Them: "You're still hiding something"

You: "This was everything!"

Them: "We don't believe you" -rubber hose-

You: "Stop it! I planned to blow up the world trade center!"

Them: "We knew you were a liar."

To themselves: "Wow, torture works."

Rinse, repeat.

frandroid··on Show HN: HiddenVM – Use any desktop OS without leaving a trace
My understanding is that people who torture you don't know what you don't know; so they don't know when to stop. As such, they'll keep torturing you way past the point where you've admitted to everything you know. This is why information obtained under torture is considered unreliable: eventually you'll just say anything to stop the torture; further admissions will support the use of torture as an information extraction tactic, and then lead to more torture.
