frakt0x90··on US to modernize electrical grid – for clean energy and fewer outages
It mentions AI as a big ticket item in electrical demand. Could just be for clicks, but if AI and crypto aren't good for anything else, if it convinces the government to make our electrical grid more robust, I guess I'll call it a win. A very expensive and arguably wasteful win, but a win nonetheless.
frakt0x90··on Southwest Airlines now available on Google Flights
How do you know what Southwest is investing in internally? Sounds like a large problem to solve that will take time. I haven't seen any info about this.

Also, yeah all companies lobby against competition.

frakt0x90··on Southwest Airlines now available on Google Flights
It depends on the route obviously but I find Southwest prices to be comparable to other non low cost airlines like Delta, American, etc. The few occasions I got bit by the $200 change fee on the others has made me consider Southwest much more. I refuse to fly the super cheap airlines.
frakt0x90··on Non-Euclidean Doom: what happens to a game when pi is not 3.14159 (2022) [video]
There was a tool a long time ago that did this for an n64 emulator. I tried it and it was fun for a while but predictably would crash often. There was also a glitch art project that would corrupt specific segments of famous image and video files to create something new. I wish I could find either but I cannot.
frakt0x90··on Ask HN: What rabbit hole(s) did you dive into recently?
I watched Lex Fridman interview Richard Wolff and have spent 2 weeks going hard into marxist and anarchist theories and practice. Working through 2 books, a dozen browser tabs, interviews, etc. It's rare something catches my interest like this (especially non-technical). But I'm really enjoying all the different perspectives and formulating my own fantasy scenarios.
frakt0x90··on I'm hating swe, what could be another career?
I agree. Sounds like OP shouldn't give up yet. It's their very first year and the range of experiences at different employers are so vast. Just hop around and see if you like other areas.

Demoscene? Mostly geared towards graphics but that's one example.
frakt0x90··on Elliptic curve 'murmurations' found with AI
This is something I've been thinking about a lot lately. Especially in combinatorics and number theory, there are databases like oeis, LMFDB, etc that contain tons of data with the ability to generate more algorithmically (sometimes easier said than done). Using ML to get heuristics and really good guesses on where the next opportunities lie and then formalizing it once you have a good guess would be SO cool.

Is there a name for that? Or groups working on that stuff that I could follow?

My own little pet project was I scraped OEIS and built a graph of sequences where 2 were connected if one mentioned the other in its related sequences section. You got these huge clusters around prime powers and other important sequences. Then I thought maybe you could use a GNN to do link prediction providing an estimation of a relationship that should exist but hasn't been discovered yet.

frakt0x90··on Miles Davis and the recording of Kind of Blue
Strongly agree. See artists such as Domi and JD Beck, Snarky Puppy, Jesus Molina, Sungazer, Greg Mehldau, Sullivan Fortner... The list goes on.

There are some extremely great jazz musicians out there today.

frakt0x90··on Learning to be managed
This is where I am. I'm remote senior level and got offered principal but 3 days in office which would mean moving cities and WAY more pressure in a department that's had issues. Probably a 50k raise but I'm doing fine as is. I'll keep my sanity.

frakt0x90··on Deluge, a portable sequencer, synthesizer and sampler
I am lucky to have a friend who's less stingy than me. He bought one and let me play with it for a week. I loved it. It's intuitive, fun, and very powerful. I usually work in a DAW and have an Arturia Microbrute, so I thought it would be annoying doing everything in hardware. It was actually really satisfying doing everything with physical buttons and knobs. I still don't want to drop the cash for it but I thoroughly enjoyed my experience with the Deluge.
frakt0x90··on Ask HN: How to find time to learn after full-time job?
Part of it is finding a company that doesn't work you to the bone. I have a normal 9-5 in a very technical field but the PTO is generous, nobody is counting my hours, and as long as I deliver reasonably in the timeframe they're looking for everyone is super happy. There were years that I was working at most 4 hours a day. Now it's closer to the full 8 but the pace of the day is not grueling.

This falls under the generic umbrella of taking care of yourself. Take breaks, eat and sleep well, exercise... These all help with energy levels and mood.

Another one that was very helpful for me is to find a hobby you really enjoy outside of the field of your work. For years all I did for hobby and work was programming. It got me really far, really quickly in my career but I burnt out hard one year. Even though I thought I was enjoying myself the whole time. So I picked up music, drawing, reading (non-tech)... All helped me disconnect and get better. Doing things a little bit every day will see surprising gains.

frakt0x90··on PRQL as a DuckDB Extension
I love the idea of PRQL and having a DuckDB extension will make it a lot easier to play with since I'm already using that for my hobby data science projects.
frakt0x90··on Performance Analysis of Python's Dict() and {}
I guess I see this post as more about profiling, discovering unintuitive differences, and exploring python internals than offering 20ns optimizations. I personally appreciated it.
frakt0x90··on Airbus Shatters Record for Jet Orders as Demand Soars
Or for airlines like Southwest that have an exclusive contract with Boeing and would require an enormous cost and effort to introduce any other manufacturer.
frakt0x90··on Is my plane a 737 MAX?
Except according to the top comment,

"A lot of people don't realize that the fuselage of this plane isn't even made by Boeing, it's made by Spirit AeroSystems which also makes components for Airbus. We don't really know who to blame here until the investigation concludes."

So I guess you just shouldn't fly.

frakt0x90··on Python 3.13 Gets a JIT
What are you talking about? From what I can read here there is no syntax change. Just a framework for faster execution. Plus, Python's usecase has HEAVILY evolved over the last few years since it's now the defacto language for machine learning. It's great that the core devs are keeping up with the time.

The language is definitely getting more complex syntactically, and I'm not a huge fan of some of those changes but it's no where near Java or C++ or anything else. You can still write simple Python with all of these changes.

frakt0x90··on Alaska 737 cockpit voice recorder data erasure renews safety debate
Idk how the devices work but if you have to replace them to get the extra capacity, it would still cost the airlines money, and the FAA has historically been very friendly with airlines.
frakt0x90··on Researchers discover physical cause of long Covid tiredness
It would be interesting to know if the odds decrease with reinfection. Are there any studies on that?
frakt0x90··on Julia 1.10
Just wanted to say I appreciate all the Julia content and evangelism you put out. It's kept me excited for the language and is a big reason I still use it for most of my personal work.
frakt0x90··on Ask HN: What skill do you want to develop or improve in 2024?
Art of all kinds.

I started piano over Covid and have gotten pretty decent. Would like to continue improving on that.

Some kind of visual art. I have enjoyed making some pixel art and got a drawing kit for christmas.

I have written fragments of a dozen stories and used to write poetry regularly. Would like to finish something.

frakt0x90··on From Nand to Tetris (2017)
In my opinion, learning anything in your field is useful because it helps you form a better mental representation of what you're doing. Will building electronics directly help with mundane web dev? Maybe not. But if you think it's cool, do it! Have fun! Broaden your horizons!
frakt0x90··on Tell HN: I salute everyone on call/working support through the holidays

frakt0x90··on How do I become a graphics programmer?
Blender's shader graph and geometry nodes seem like a fun/easy intro that I've been meaning to try. May not be 'programming' in the literal sense of typing text on the screen to produce graphics, but I'm hoping it would give a conceptual graph of how to produce the images I want that I could later transform into code if needed. Please correct me if I'm wrong as I haven't dove in.
