American suburbs are largely a Ponzi scheme. They start out with loads of funding to build out all of the infrastructure and then in 20 years they can not afford to replace it all so they are funded by building another suburb. Eventually most of them will fail or some economic trick will be pulled to fund them.

I’m not sure why a freak accident should be used as an example of anything. If anything it stands to show how insanely problem free modern buildings are if one building falling down is shocking news globally and known as one of the worst non malicious building issues in the developed world.

You can reset your costs by renting out the car park. I make $50 AUD/week renting out my city car park to someone who works near by.

That seems to be the norm in Australia. When a building gets approved, the developer puts all the apartments up for sale before it gets built. Of course most of them get sold to landlords but it’s not one company that owns the whole building and there is nothing stopping you buying one as they are always selling.

You can kind of have it if you mean walkable to just the general store, a cafe and a few other things but you can never have everything because many kinds of stores can only exist with a certain population close enough.

What I love about living in the city is literally _everything_ I need is within walking distance. I have not used a car or any form of public transport in months and have felt no need to, I can buy anything within walking distance and all offices for any job I would take in this state are within walking distance. You just can’t have that with houses because each house takes up a significant space which you have to walk past to get anywhere.

I recently moved from a house in the suburbs in Australia to an apartment in the city. Got rid of my car and now I just walk to everything I need. I couldn’t be happier. Driving was such a huge stress on my life that is now gone. I can get anything I need within a 10 minute walk.

The thing is it just doesn’t seem like the average person is willing to give up single family houses to gain walkability. For me, I would never go back.

Im guessing there is some kind of performance issue here. Where large or certain kinds of archives can have huge unzip times. Or especially that it is hard to determine the unzip time before unzipping.

Google drive drops a lot of features that are technically easy because there is no fast or constant time to perform the action.

Under 13 seems like an ok cutoff but I’d be very concerned that they push it to under 18. Pretty much everyone is sharing adult context responsibly at 17.

The add on breaking issue was solved. Now there is a stable add on api and updates will not break it constantly like they did

Firefox can’t win really. They do anything and half the users complain and half the users state it made the browser finally usable.

While google does whatever they want and people just nod and move along.

That’s why my suggestion is to offer them the choice to willingly use a shelter or go to jail. Homelessness and drug abuse can not be allowed to exist to keep public spaces safe.

IMO the city should provide enough homeless shelters for everyone and then just make homelessness illegal. So if you are found sleeping in a tent you get referred to the nearest shelter and if you refuse you get arrested.

We can not allow homelessness to exist because it makes public spaces unsafe like you mention. Homeless shelters can also help by making it hard for them to continue their drug addictions.

I have just come to accept this is how it is and unless you are a wiki power user who can just directly create a page, don’t bother and let someone else create it because you are wasting your time. I find it funny that articles like the one for GitLab had to fight off the wiki mods who wanted to remove it for not being notable.

The worst part is how Wikipedia does not have a logical user introduction flow. They have an insane amount of rules and process but they will very quickly drop a brand new user in to a text box and make it look like you simply type in some stuff and the page will be created.

They need some kind of reputation system to ramp up users to greater and greater feature sets like stack overflow has rather than pretending a brand new or unauthenticated user can just create a page.

Editing an existing page is usually pretty easy and conflict free. Creating a new page is close to impossible and strictly guarded.

It’s almost not worth trying for a beginner because you will almost certainly be rejected. The moderators require multiple approved sources of information for a page to be created. These pages must be reputable sources (IE not blog posts, forum posts, or other wikis), and must not have any kind of commercial link to the subject. So if you create a page about a product and you state that it has feature X, you can not use the companies own page that talks about having X as a reference.

So basically you can’t make a page about something until a major news website writes about it or you can reference it in some formal study.

I tried to create a few pages. One of them being about a file format and found that I could not use the companies website with the PDF describing the spec as a reference for the format because there is a commercial link between the file format and the source linked.

There have been some trials of cameras that detect phone usage. They ran one just as an experiment in Australia and found on one road in one day they found hundreds of phone users driving.

I haven’t heard of any of them being put in place for actual enforcement yet though.

Self driving cars will be great because everywhere becomes a zebra crossing.

What if you are just building a generic CRUD app?

They shouldn’t be travelling that far at all. They should be within a walkable distance of where they need to go. Walking to work is never stressful and often does reverse.

Teams can do this. Create a calendar event or manually set yourself to busy and you will not receive notifications and people can see this. There is also a button on the sender side to mark the message as important to notify anyway.

I solved this by creating calendar events for just myself. I’ll book an hour of dedicated programming time and then after that I’ll respond to all of my messages. Or if I don’t need to be hyper focused on a task I’ll bounce around and respond to various messages and check the status of stuff.

My company has gone to mixed but everyone naturally picks the same days Monday to Wednesday typically at home and Thursday/Friday everyone is in.

This avoids all the issues of mixed.

They clearly aren’t that bad. China has very dense cities and has not had much issue controlling spread. Masks and a respectful society seem to be highly effective at stoping viruses.

I would suggest that Friday makes a good time for the mandatory day. Means people can go out for drinks at the end of the day. The in office days will never be as productive but they can be good socialising times so you may as well make use of that.

These days every single drive should have full disk encryption. And then you can format by simply securely wiping the key part.

iOS has 2 solutions to this. They have a push models where you “share” the file to the next app you want to use. And they also have a traditional file store model where all apps can request to save and request to load files.

Critically, apps can not directly read your files, they can show a button which will open the OS file picker and the user can pick a file to open which then provides access to the app.

This means that opening a game does not instantly expose all of your sensitive files.
